Winte r oper ati on
During the winter months, battery capacity
tends to decrease as temperatures drop. This
i s because more power is also consumed while
start ing, and the headlights, rear window de­
fogger, etc., are used more often .
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, par­
ticularly in city traffic or when traveling only
short distances . Let your authorized Audi
dealer check the capac ity of the vehicle bat­
tery before winte r sets inc::>

prob lems when the weathe r is cold, but will
a lso last longer .
Replacing battery
The new battery must have the same capaci­
ty, vo ltage ( 12 volts), amperage, cons truction
and p lug sealing, as the origina l ba tte ry. Spec­
if ications are listed on the batte ry housing.
Batteries specially developed by A udi fulfill
the maintenance, output, and safety require­
ments.
When insta lling the battery, make sure the ig ­
nition and all electrica l cons umers are switch­
ed off c::>

We recommen d that yo u use ma intenance­
free or
cy cle- re sis tant /leak-pr oof batteries
according to the standards TL 825 06 (from
April 2008) and VW 7 SO 73 (from Apri l
2010).
Replacing the batte ry should be carried by a
q ua lified workshop. P lease follow the instruc­
tions on the battery cover.

- The battery must not be opened! Do not
try to change the battery 's liquid level,
otherwise detonating gas will escape

- The AGM battery in the luggage com­
partment cannot leak, because the elec­
t ro lyte for this batte ry is abso rbed into a
special glass mat. This lea k-proof battery
must not be replace with a convent iona l
bat tery.
- Make su re the ventilation hose on t he
side of the ba ttery is connected, othe r­
w ise fumes or battery ac id can leak out.
- Batte ry holder and termin als always
have to be sec ured correc tly.
- Before all work on the batte ry follow the

@ For the sake of the environment
Because of the p rob lem of proper disposal
of a ba ttery, we recommend your author­
i zed Audi dealer change the bat tery fo r
you. Batteries contain sulfuric acid and l ead and must always be disposed of prop ­
erly in comp liance with a ll environmental
regulat ions. Disposing of vehicle batter ies
i mproperly is very dangerous to the envi­
ro nment. Make sure that the removed bat­
tery cannot overbalance, othe rwise sulfu­
r ic acid might escape!
@ Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several
weeks at extremely low temperatures, the
vehicle battery shou ld be removed and
stored w here it w ill not freeze. This will
p revent it from be ing dam aged and h aving
to be replaced .

Working on the battery
Be especially careful when working on or near
the battery!
The battery is located in the luggage compart­
ment under the floor. Before you work on or
near the battery,
read and heed all WARN­
INGS ~.&. -
Always heed the safety warnings, when work­
ing on the vehicle battery or the vehicle elec ­
tr ical system to prevent injury .
The following WARNINGS are very
important when working on the battery:

A WARNING

Whenever working on the battery or on
the electrical system, there is the risk of
injury, accident and even fire. Read and
heed the following WARNINGS:
- Always wear eye protection. Do not let
battery acid or any lead particles get on
your sk in or cloth ing. Sh ield your eyes.
Explosive gases can cause blindness or
other injury .
- Battery acid contains sulfur ic acid. Sulfu­
ric acid can cause blindness and severe
burns.
- Always wear gloves and eye protection.
Do not tilt the battery because ac id

could leak out of the ventilation open­
ings.
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or
on your skin, immediately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get
med ical attention.
- If you shou ld ingest any battery acid,
seek medical attention immediately.
- Do not expose the battery to an open
flame, e lectr ic sparks or an open light.
- Do not smoke .
- Do not interchange the positive and neg -
ative cables .
- When working on the battery, be sure
not to short-circuit the terminals with
too ls or othe r metal objects . This would
cause the battery to heat up very quickly,
which could lead to damage or explosion
and personal injury.
- When a battery is charged, it produces
hydrogen gas which is explosive and
could cause personal injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before work is done on the electrical sys­ tem, disconnect the negat ive ground ca­
ble.
- Before performing any work on the e lec­
tr ical system, switch off the engine and
ignit ion as well as any electrical equip­
ment. The negative cable on the battery
must be disconnected .
If you are just go­
ing to replace a light bulb, then it is
enough to switch off the lights.
- Before disconnecting the battery, switch
off the anti-theft alarm system! Other­
wise you will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first disconnect the negative cable and then
the positive cab le .
- Before reconnecting the battery, make
sure all electr ica l consumers are switch­
ed off . Reconnect the positive cable first
and then the negative cable. Never inter­
change the cables - this could start a fire!
- Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out
battery. It could exp lode! If a battery has
frozen, then it must be replaced. A

When charging at low voltages (e.g . w ith a
tri ckle charger ), the battery cables do not
have to be d isconnected first. Be fore charging
at
high voltages, i.e. " fast charging ", you
must disconnect both cables. In e ither case,

as cont ro l units, re lays, radio, etc. , as well
as the battery charge r.

The vehicle batte ry must not be charged
with a standard small charger that plugs in to the c igarette lighter or outlet.

is too high when the tire is "cold," let air out
of the tire slowly with the edge of the t ire
gauge and keep checking the pressure until
you reach the pressure that is correct for the
load (passengers and luggage) and kind of
driving you plan to do .
If the pressure in any tire is too low, note the
d ifference between the pressure in the cold
tire and the pressure you need and add the a ir
that you need to reach the correct pressure for
the veh icle load (passengers and luggage) for
the tires on your veh icle as listed on the on
your ve hicle and in this manua l and the kind
of dr iving you p lan to do .
Never exce ed the ma ximum inflation pres ­
s ur e listed on t he tire s idewall for any re a­
s on.
Remember that the vehicle manufacturer , not
the t ire manufacturer , determ ines the correct
tire pressure for the tires on your veh icle .
It is important to check the tire pressure when
the t ires a re cold .
- Read the req uired tire press ure from the tire
pressure label located on driver's s ide B-pil­
l ar .
- Turn the valve stem cap counter-clockwise
to remove it from the tire valve .
- Place the air pressure ga uge on the valve.
- The tire pressures sho uld on ly be checked
and adjusted when the tires are cold . The
s light ly raised pressures of warm tires must
not be reduced.
- Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are
carrying.
- Re insta ll the va lve stem cap on the valve .
When should I check the tire pressure?
The correct tire pressure is espec ially impo r­
tant at high speeds . The pressure sho uld
therefore be checked at least once a month
and a lways befo re starting a journey.
When should I adjust the tire pressures?

Incorrect tire pressures and/or underinfla­
tion can lead sudden tire fa ilure, loss of
control, collision, serio us pe rsonal injury
or even death.
- When the warning symbol
[I] appears in
the instrument cluster, stop and inspect
the t ires.
- Inco rrect tire pressure and/or underinfla­
tion can cause increased tire wea r and
can affect the handling of the vehicle and
stopping ability.
- Inco rrect tire pressures and/or underin­
flation can a lso lead to sudden t ire fail­
ure, including a blowou t and su dden de­
flation, ca using loss of veh icle cont ro l.
- Th e drive r is responsi ble for the correc t
tire pressures for all tires on the veh icle.
The applicable pressure values a re locat ­
ed on a sticke r on the dr iver's side B-pil­
lar.
- On ly when all tires on the vehicle are fil ­
led to the correct pressure, the t ire pres­
sure mon itor ing system can work cor­
rectly.
- The use of incorrect tire pressu re va lues
can lead to acc idents or other damage.
Therefore it is essential that the driver
observe the spec ified t ire pressure values
for the tires and the correct pressures for
the function of th e ti r e p ressu re monito r­
ing system.
- Always inf late tires to the recommended
a nd correct t ire p ress ure before dr iv ing
off.
- Driving with unde rinflated tir es bend
mo re, letting t hem get too hot resulting
in tre ad separation, sudden tire f ailure
and loss of cont rol.
- Exces sive speed and/overloading can
cause he at bu ild- up, sudden tire failure
an d loss of cont rol. •

remain continuous ly illuminated . This se ­
quence will continue upon subsequent vehicle
start-ups as long as the ma lfunction ex ists.
When the malfunct ion indicator is ill uminat­
ed, the system may not be able to detect or
signa l low tire pressure as intended. TPMS
malfunct ions may occur for a variety of rea­
sons, including the installat ion of replace­
ment or alternate tires or wheels on the veh i­
cle that prevent the TPMS from funct io ni ng
properly. Always check the TPMS malfunct ion
tellta le afte r replacing one or more t ires or
wheels on your veh icle to ensure that the re­
p lacement or a lternate tires and wheels allow
the TPMS to continue to function properly.
Tire pressure indicator appears
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressure monitoring system
The tire pressure indicator in the instrument
cluster informs you if the tire pressure is too
low or if there is a system malfunction.

Using the ABS sensors, the tire pressure moni ­
toring system compares the t ire tread circum­
fe rence and vibration characteristics of the in­
d iv idual tires . If the pressure decreases in one

Handling characteristics change when
driving with low air pressure or with flat
tires even with special run-flat tires
A low pressure or flat front tire affects vehicle
handling characteristics by pu lling the vehicle
slightly to the side where the tire is mounted
and reduces braking performance .
A low pressure or flat
rear tire also affects
driving character istics by pulling to the side
where the tire is mounted and also reduces
brak ing performance. The effect on vehicle
handling is most not iceable when driving
around curves.
A WARNING
Changed vehicle handling character istics
when driving in the run -f lat mode can
cause loss of vehicle contro l, a crash and
serious personal injury.
- Driving on special run-flat tires in the
run-f lat mode wi ll change vehicle han­
dling characteristics during braking,
when cornering and under heavy acceler­
ation.
- Never drive faster than the maximum
rated speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) when
dr iv ing in the run -flat mode.
- Always adjust vehicle speed to traffic,
road and weather cond itions and drive
slower than the max imum rated speed if
necessary weather and road conditions
are taken into account.
- Always obey speed limits and other traf­
fic laws.

We always recommend driving w ith even
more care when using these special t ires in
the run-flat mode . Always avo id sudden
maneuvers.

Replacing run-flat tires and rims

Your vehicle was especially designed to use
special run-flat tires.
You may use and combine only approved run­
flat tires and special matching rims that have
been designed for run-flat tires . Mounting
special run-flat tires on standard wheels will not work and w ill not prov ide the advantages
fo the ru n-falt feature . Never use spec ial run­
flat tires on standa rd wheel rims.
After dr iving with a tire i n the run-flat mode,
always have the vehicle and affected tire(s)
and rim(s) inspected by a n authorized Audi
dealer. Tires that have been driven in the run­
f lat mode must be rep laced .
A WARNING
-Use of damaged run-flat tires and rims can
cause vehicle damage that can lead to loss
of vehicle control, a crash and serious per­
sonal injury.
- Always have the vehicle and affected
tire(s) and r im(s) inspected by an author­
ized Audi dealer after driving a tire in the
run-flat mode .
- Tires that have been dr iven in the run­
flat mode must be replaced.

ward or forward. This helps to distribute the
sealant better .
~ Remove the empty inflation bott le and

~ Insert the plug©¢ fig. 155 into the socket
for the cigarette lighter.

nutes, tire pressure must have reached at
least 1.8 bar.
~ Switch the electric a ir pump off - switch in
position
0 . If the requ ired tire pressure of at
least 1.8 bar has not been reached, it is not
poss ible to make a repa ir with the tire seal ­
ant. Seek professional ass istance.
Disassembling Tire Mobility System
~ Remove the hose from the valve and pu ll
the plug out of the socket.
~ Screw the dust cap onto the valve.
~ Place the empty sealant bottle back in the
original packag ing and clip it in place under
the floor so that no tire sealant can run out
into the vehicle.
~ Place the elect ric air pump in the luggage
compartment for the time being.
~ Start driving right away so that the sealant
is distributed in the tire.
A WARNING
-Follow the manufacturer's safety instruc­
t ions on the deca l for the air pump and
the sealant bott le.
- If a t ire pressure of 1.8 bar cannot be
achieved after pump ing for 5 m inutes,
the tire is too severely damaged. Do not
continue to drive .
- Seek profess ional assistance if it is not
poss ible to repair the tire with the tire
sealant.

6 min utes.

(D Tips
-Do not operate the electric air pump for
more than 6 minutes witho ut stopping,
otherwise it can overheat. When the a ir
pump has coo led down, you can continue
to use it.
- If sealant has escaped, allow it to dry,
then you can peel it off.
Final check

After driving for a short distance, tire
pressure must be checked
~ After d riving for about 10 m inutes, stop
and check the tire pressure.
~ If tire pressure is still at leas t 1.3 bar, in­
flate the tire to specified pressure (see driv­
ers side B -pillar), drive to the next repair
shop and have the tire and the sealant bot­
tle replaced.
~ If tire pressure is less than 1.3 bar, the t ire
is too severely damaged. Do not cont inue to
drive . Seek professional assistance.
A WARNING
If t ire pressure is less than 1.3 bar after
driving for 10 minutes, the tire is too se­
ve rely damaged. Do not continue to drive.
Seek professional ass istance .

After a tire repair, have the sealant bottle
replaced at a dealership. This restores full
funct iona lity to the Tire Mobility System.
