- When switching the ignition on, the nee­
dles in the instrument cluster move up­
ward briefly.
- The illumination for the instrument clus ­
ter lights up whenever you switch on the
i gnition with the
vehicle headlights off .
As the daylight fades, the instrument
cluster illumination likewise dims auto­
matically a nd will go out completely
when the outside light is very low. This
feature is meant to remind you to switch
on the head lights when outside light
conditions become poor .
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes) .

If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the br eak-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position "D (Drive)" or ease
your foot off the acce lerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should only briefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beg inning of the red zone var­
i es depending on the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

If you have a malfunction in the safety sys ­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.
~ Safety belt warning light
App lies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts.
The warning light . comes on for a few sec ­
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt.

0 Generator
This warning/indicator light detects a mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system .
The. warning/ind icator light illuminates
when yo u switch on the ignit ion and must go
out after the engine has started .
I f the . warning/indicator light illum inates
while you are driving, yo u should contact you r
author ized Audi dealer. Since the veh icle bat­
tery is discha rging, you should switch
off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam ­
p le, the air conditioner).
~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair.
I f the . symbol appears in the display and
flashes, the oil pressure is too low . In addition
to the symbo l, the following message a lso ap­
pears in the d isp lay:
S wi tch off en gin e! Oil pr essure is t oo low
• Pull off the road and stop the vehicle .
• Shut the engine down.
• Check the eng ine oil level¢
page 185.
• Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
sistance if necessary .
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low , top off oil to
t h e proper level

If the . symbol starts flashing again even
though the eng ine oil level checks OK on the
dipstick,
do not start dri ving again and d o
not l et th e engine run at idl e.

- The engin e oil pr essure symbol. is

- The yellow oil le vel warning indication

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
When the. symbol in the d isplay flashes,
then either the engine coolant
temperature i s
too high, or the coolant
level is too low . In ad­
dition to the symbo l, the following message
also appears in the d isp lay:
Swit ch off en gin e and chec k coolant level
• Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
• Turn
off the engine.
• Check coolant level

• Continue driv ing on ly after the engine cool-

Bi) Fuel supply too low
When the (g symbol illuminates, this means
there are about 1.9 gallons (7 liters) of fuel
left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is
ample fuel in the tank, and the text

tem malfunction! Please contact workshop
appears in the display, there is a fault in the
system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

Windshield washer fluid level too
low
If the Ill symbol illuminates, add w indshield
washer f luid to the washer system

® Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­
tive.
If a defect ive bulb has been detected by the
system or a light bu lb burns out, the
fsl sym­
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to
tell you wh ich bu lb is burnt out and where it is
l ocated. For example:
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If
you want to recall the message into the dis­
p lay, press the CH ECK button

There are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the display:
- The light bulb has burnt out

- The fuse is "blown" Q page 228, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bu lb is de-
fective.
H ave the bu lb rep laced or the connection re­
pa ired by your a uthorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious pe rsonal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
h igh-voltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<® > Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
ure, the symbo l (USA models)/
(@ ll ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or replaced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler for assis­
tance if necessary.
(D Tips
The brake light sw itch is on ly inspected as
part of the functional check after the en­
gine is started.
i,0 Headlight range control defective
Applies to vehicles: wit h dynamic headlight range adjust­
ment
If the II illuminates, the dynamic headlight
range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your
authorized Audi dealer .
rsO Adaptive light defective
Applies to vehicles: with Ada ptive Lig ht
rm Adaptive light defective
When this symbol rm illuminates, it means
that Adaptive Light is defect ive. Go to a qua li­
fied workshop to have the headlights or the
control unit for the Adaptive Light repaired.

The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

With the igni tion on, the display in the Dr iver
I nformation System shows the fo llow ing in­
formation :
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F (+ 5 °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the tempe rature d isplay

- Wa rning: front lid , door or eng ine compart­
ment lid open: The disp lay appea rs if the
door, the eng ine compartmen t lid or front
li d is no t closed.

Some f unctions and vehicle components are
scanned for the ir operating status when you
s witch the ign ition on and whi le you are driv­
ing . Malfunctions or required service proce­
dures are s ignaled audibly and ind icated by
red and yellow illuminated symbols and re­
minders in t he d isplay.

- Neve r rely ex clusively o n the o utside
tempera ture display to de termine if a
road surface is icy or not. Keep in m ind
that road surfaces, espec ially br idges
and overpasses, co uld be ice covered and
slippery even at an outside temperature

-Always remember, even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the d isplay, black ice co uld be on
the road .
- Always red uce your speed and d rive with
specia l care in cold weathe r cond itions
when the chance of encoun tering icy
road surfaces i ncreases .
(D Tips
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are
dr iving at a very low speed , the tempera­
t u re shown in the d isplay might be
slightly h igher than the actua l o utside
tempe rature. Thi s is caused by the heat
be ing rad iated from t he engine.
- On ve hicles with Audi Nav igation sys­
tem*, the disp lays may differ from their
normal appe aran ce during navig ation.
