-Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only within
defined detection and range limits that
may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving vehicles up ahead may not be promptly detected or may not be de­
tected at al l.
- Reflective surfaces includ ing crash barr i­
ers or tunnel ent ran ces may impair the
function of the radar sensor.
- You can cance l the braking that is initiat­
ed by the system by braking yourself, by
accelerating noticeab ly or by swerving.

- Keep in mind that braking guard can
brake unexpectedly . Always secure any
ca rgo or objects that you are transport­

pressure was applied due to an acu te warning.

Three white dots appear if a sett ing cannot be
selected w ith the operating lever. For exam­
ple, this happens if you want to raise/lower

Side assist functions at speeds above approxi­
mately 19 mph (30 km/h).
(D Vehicles that are approaching
I n certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itica l for a lane change even if it is still
somewhat far away . The faster a vehicle ap­
proaches, the sooner the display in the exteri ­
or mirror will turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling with you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as critica l
for a lane change. All vehicles detected by
side assist are indicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.
@ Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a vehicle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the
vehicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph
(15 km/h), the disp lay in the exterior mirror
turns on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The display will not turn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that side assist has detected (the dif­
ference in speed between the vehicle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar sensors are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes when the road
lanes are the normal width. In certain situa­
tions, the display in the exterior mirror may
turn on even though there is no vehicle locat­
ed in the area that is critical for a lane change.
For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are driving
on the edge of your lane. If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another lane that is
not adjacent to your
current lane.
- if you are driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a veh icle that is one lane over
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or displaced guard ra ils). -
In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the rada r senso rs~
fig. 117 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function . For
information on cleaning, refer to~
page 193.
A WARNING
-
-Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your vehicle. Side assist can­
not replace a driver's attention. The driv­
er alone is always responsible for lane
changes and similar dr iving maneuvers .
- Improper reliance on the side assist sys­
tem can cause coll is ions and serious per­
sonal injury:
- Never rely on ly on side assist when
changing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
s ur e that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un­
de r all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates
there are approaching vehicles, or
vehicles in your blind spot, only after
your vehicle has reached a driving speed
of at least 19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certain sit uations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited.
For example:
- if vehicles are approach ing or being left
behind very quickly. The disp lay may
not turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as
heavy rain, snow or heavy mist.
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface.
Vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are outside
of the sensor range .

The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
u nderbody. This can affect the system. .,..

thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.

- If the window glass in the driver's door

Activating and deactivating

Adjusting the display brightness

The signal brightness can be set in the radio
orMMI* .

The display brightness adjusts automatically
to the brightness of the surroundings, both in
the information and in the warning stage. In
very dark or very bright surroundings, the dis­ play is already set to the minimum or maxi ­
mum level by the automatic adjustment. In

such cases, you may notice no change when
adjusting the br ightness, or the change may
only be noticeable once the surroundings
change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the dis­
play in the information stage will not disrupt
your view forward. If you change the bright­
ness, the display in the exterior mirror will
briefly show the brightness level in the infor­
mation stage. The brightness of the warning
stage is linked to the brightness in the infor­
mation stage and is adjusted along with the
information stage adjustment.

- Side assist is not active while you are
making the adjustment.

Driver messages

If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected . Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary
¢page 101, fig . 117.
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunction (for example,
the battery charge level may be too low) .
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will de­
tect vehicles correctly and it is switched off.
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty.
Have the system checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
soon.

Sensors are located in the rear bumpers. If
these detect an obstacle, audible and visual signals warn you. The range at wh ich the sen­
sors beg in to measure is approximately:

Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system. As the distance de­
creases, the time interval between the audible
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0.30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up.
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the distance signal chime is
gradually reduced after about 4 seconds (does not affect the continuous s ignal tone). Ap­
proach ing another obstacle w ill cause the dis-

We recommend that you pract ice pa rking with
the rear view camera in a traffic-free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing this, there should be good light
and weather conditions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
- you are driving in reverse gear from a level
surface onto an inclin e, or a downward
slope,
- you are driving in reverse gear towa rd pro­
truding objects,
- the vehicle is carrying too mu ch load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a reli­
able image, for example, in poor visibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun glare and reflection.
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear v iew camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket. For the parking assist to
operate, the lens

clean:
- Dampen the lens w ith a household a lcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth
