3. Turn the cap slowly counterclock-
wise, then pause slightly before re-
moving it. After removing the cap,
hang it on the cap hanger.
It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh
when the cap is opened. When installing,
turn the cap clockwise till you hear a
click. (No key is required.)
CAUTION
DMake sure the cap is installed se-
curely to prevent fuel spillage in
the event of an accident.
DDue to the regulation of fuel tank
pressure that these caps provide,
Toyota recommends the use of a
genuine Toyota fuel tank cap.
Another fuel tank cap of matching
quality can also be used.
DWhen opening the cap, do not re-
move the cap quickly. In hot weath-
er, fuel under pressure could cause
injury by spraying out of the filler
neck if the cap is suddenly re-
moved.

The airbag manual on−off system con-
sists of an airbag manual on−off switch
and SRS warning light. The switch can
disable the front airbag on the front
passenger side only. The SRS warning
light comes on when the airbag is dis-
abled. Disable the airbag only when
installing a rear−facing child restraint
system on the front passenger seat is
unavoidable.
The airbag manual on−off switch is lo-
cated on the driver side instrument panel
and the SRS warning light is located on
the instrument cluster panel.
Before operating the airbag manual on−off
switch, stop the vehicle and turn the en-
gine off. Insert the key into the key cylin-
der and turn it. To disable the airbag, turn
the key to the “OFF” position. The SRS
warning light will come on to tell you that
the airbag is off when the engine is turned
on. (For details about the indicator light,
see the following descriptions.) Be sure to
remove the key from the key cylinder.
Vehicles with side and curtain shield air-
bags—Thissystem cannot turn off the
side airbags and curtain shield airbags.

134GAUGES, METERS AND SERVICE REMINDER INDICATORS
If the light comes on while driving, the
systemdoes not work. However, as con-
ventional braking operates when applied,
there is no problem to continue your driv-
ing.
In the following cases, contact any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional:
DThe warning light does not come on
after the engine switch is turned to the
“ON” position.
DThe warning light remains on after the
engine switch is turned to the “ON”
position.
DThe warning light comes on while driv-
ing.
(m) SRS Warning Light
This light will come on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position.
It goes off after about 6 seconds or
remains on when the airbag manual on−
off switch is in the “OFF” position.
This means the airbag system is operat-
ing properly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, side airbag sen-
sors, side and curtain shield airbag sen-
sors, front seat belt pretensioner assem-
blies, inflators, warning light,
interconnecting wiring and power sources.
If either of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction somewhere in
the components monitored by the warning
light system. Contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, as
soon as possible to service the vehicle.
DThe key cylinder cannot be turned.

mains off or flashes.

or flashes without illuminating for more
than 6 seconds.
DWhile driving the vehicle, the light goes
off or flashes.
(n) Electric Power Steering System
Warning Light
The light comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position. If
the electric power steering system warning
light works properly, the light turns off
after a few seconds. If thesystem has
malfunctions, the light comes on again.
If the following conditions occur, this
indicates a malfunction somewhere in
the parts monitored by the warning
light system. Contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped profession-
al, as soon as possible to service the
vehicle.
DThe light does not come on when the
engine switch is turned to the “ON”
position or remains on.
DThe light stays on while you are driv-
ing.
The warning light turning on while racing
the engine for a long time may not indi-
cate malfunction. To turn off the light, re-
start the engine and start driving.

GAUGES, METERS AND SERVICE REMINDER INDICATORS135
CAUTION
If the electric power steering system
warning light comes on, take your ve-
hicle to any authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional, as soon
as possible. In this case, more effort
is required for the steering wheel to
turn than usual. Drive your vehicle
while firmly gripping the steering
wheel.
(o) Light Reminder Buzzer
This buzzer will sound if the driver ’s door
is opened while the engine switch is
turned to the “LOCK” position with the
headlight switch on. Removing the key will
not stop the buzzer as long as the head-
light switch is on.
(p) Warning function of the Multi−mode
manual transmission (Multi−mode
manual transmission only)
When driving, if any incorrect operation
that may cause damage to this system is
performed or if the gear is not shifted as
desired by the driver, the warning buzzer
will sound and the gear position indicator
will blink to warn the driver in some
cases. For details, see “—Warning
functions” on page 154 in Section 1−7.
When the shift lever is shifted to “R”, the
reverse buzzer sounds once. This is to
indicate the shift lever position, not a
malfunction. For details, see “(d) Backing
up” on page 143 or 150 in Section 1−7.CHECKING SERVICE REMINDER
INDICATORS (except the low fuel level
warning light)
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Turn the engine switch to the “ON”
position, but do not start the engine.
All the service reminder indicators should
come on. The “ABS”, “VSC”, “STOP”, en-
gine coolant temperature, Multi−mode
manual transmission warning lights and
electric power steering system warning
lights go off after a few seconds. The
SRS warning light goes off after 6 sec-
onds.
If any service reminder indicator or warn-
ing buzzer does not function as described
above, have it checked by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, as
soon as possible.

138ENGINE (IGNITION) SWITCH, TRANSMISSION AND PARKING BRAKE
Engine (ignition) switch
MS16003c
“START”—Starter motor on. The key
will return to the “ON” position when
released.
For starting tips, see page 209 in Section
3.
“ON”
—Engine on and all accessories on.
This is the normal driving position.“ACC”—Accessories such as the radio
operate, but the engine is off.
“LOCK”—Engine is off and the steering
wheel is locked. The key can be re-
moved only at this position.
When the engine switch is turned from the
“ACC” to the “LOCK” position or 20 sec-
onds have elapsed since the engine
switch is turned from the “ON” to the
“ACC” position, the engine immobilizer
system is automatically set. (See “Engine
immobilizer system” onpage 13 in Section
1−2.)
When starting the engine, the engine
switch may seem stuck at the “LOCK”
position. To free it, first be sure the key
is pushed all the way in, and then rock
the steering wheel slightly while turning
the key gently.
It is not a malfunction if the needles on
all meters and gauges move slightly when
the engine switch is turned to the “ACC”,
“ON” or “START” position.
CAUTION
Never remove the key when the ve-
hicle is moving, as this will lock the
steering wheel and result in loss of
steering control.
NOTICE
Do not leave the engine switch in the
“ON” position if the engine is not
running. The battery will discharge
and the ignition could be damaged.
