4. Rotate drive pinion at least 20 times to check for smooth opera- tion of the bearing.
5. Measure total preload with the preload gauge (A) [SST: ST3127S000 (J-25765-A)].
NOTE:
Total preload torque = Pinion bearing preload torque + Side
bearing preload torque
If measured value is out of the specification, disassemble it to
check and adjust each part. Adjust the pinion bearing preload and side bearing preload.
Adjust the pinion bearing preload firs t, then adjust the side bearing preload.
SIDE BEARING PRELOAD
Before inspection and adjustment, drain gear oil.
1. Remove rear cover. Refer to DLN-204, "
Disassembly".
2. Make sure all parts are clean. Also, make sure the bearings are well lubricated with gear oil.
3. Place the differential case, with side bearings and bearing races installed, into gear carrier.
4. Insert left and right original side bearing adjusting washers in place between side bearings and gear carrier.Total preload torque : Refer to
DLN-222, "

When the preload torque is large
On pinion bearings: Replace the collapsible spacer.
On side bearings: Use thinner side bearing adjusting washers by the same amount to
each side. For selecting adjusting wash er, refer to the latest parts in-
formation.
When the preload is small On pinion bearings: Tighten the drive pinion lock nut.
On side bearings: Use thicker side bearing adjusting washers by the same amount to
each side. For selecting adjusting wash er, refer to the latest parts in-
formation.

1. Remove differential case assembly. Refer to DLN-204, "Disassembly".
2. Remove drive pinion lock nut with the flange wrench (commer- cial service tool).
3. Put matching mark (B) on the end of drive pinion. The matching mark should be in line with the matching mark (A) on companion
flange (1).
CAUTION:
For matching mark, use pain t. Never damage companion
flange and drive pinion.
NOTE:
The matching mark on the final drive companion flange indicates
the maximum vertical runout position.
When replacing companion flange, matching mark is not neces-
sary.
4. Remove companion flange using the suitable puller (commercial service tool).
5. Press drive pinion assembly out of gear carrier. CAUTION:
Never drop drive pinion assembly.
6. Remove front oil seal.
7. Remove side oil seal.
8. Remove pinion front bearing inner race.
9. Remove collapsible spacer.
: Apply Genuine High Strength Thread Locking Sealant or equivalent. Refer to GI-22, "Recommended Chemical Products
and Sealants".

DRIVE PINION
10. Apply anti-corrosion oil to the thread and seat of drive pinion
lock nut, and temporarily tighten drive pinion lock nut to drive
pinion, using flange wrench (c ommercial service tool).
CAUTION:
Never reuse drive pinion lock nut.
11. Adjust to the drive pinion lock nut tightening torque and pinion bearing preload torque, using preload gauge [SST: ST3127S000
(J-25765-A)].
CAUTION:
Adjust to the lower limit of the drive pinion lock nut tight-
ening torque first.
If the preload torque exceeds the specified value, replace
collapsible spacer and tighte n it again to adjust. Never
loosen drive pinion lock nut to adjust the preload torque.
After adjustment, rotate dri ve pinion back and forth 2 to 3
times to check for unusual no ise, rotation malfunction,
and other malfunctions.
12. Install differential case assembly. Refer to DLN-206, "
Assem-
bly".
CAUTION:
Never install rear cover at this timing.
13. Check and adjust drive gear runout, tooth contact, drive gear to drive pinion backlash, and companion flange runout. Refer to DLN-210, "
Adjustment" and DLN-220, "Adjustment".
Recheck above items. Readjust the above description, if necessary.
14. Check total preload torque. Refer to DLN-210, "
Adjustment".
15. Install rear cover. Refer to DLN-206, "
Assembly".

COMPANION FLANGE RUNOUT
1. Fit a test indicator to the inner side of the companion flange
(socket diameter).
2. Rotate companion flange to check for runout.
3. If the runout value is outside t he runout limit, follow the proce-
dure below to adjust.
a. Check for runout while changing the phase between companion flange and drive pinion by 90 ° step, and search for the position
where the runout is the minimum.
b. If the runout value is still outside of the limit after the phase has been changed, possible cause will be an
assembly malfunction of drive pinion and pinion bearing and malfunction of pinion bearing. Check for
these items and repair if necessary.
c. If the runout value is still outside of the limit after the check and repair, replace companion flange.

PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION:
Comply with the following cautions to
prevent any error and malfunction.
Install the xenon bulb securely. (Ins ufficient bulb socket installation may melt the bulb, the connec-
tor, the housing, etc. by high-v oltage leakage or corona discharge.)
Never perform HID circuit in spection with a tester.
Never touch the xenon bulb glass with ha nds. Never put oil and grease on it.
Dispose of the used xenon bulb after packing it in thick vinyl without breaking it.
Never wipe out dirt and cont amination with organic solven t (thinner, gasoline, etc.).
On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System of Engine and A/TINFOID:0000000006217652
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system. It will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) to warn the
driver of a malfunction causing emission deterioration.
CAUTION:
Always turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable before any repair or
inspection work. The open/short circuit of related sw itches, sensors, solenoid valves, etc. will cause
the MIL to illuminate.
Always connect and lock the conn ectors securely after work. A loose (unlocked) connector will
cause the MIL to illuminate due to the open circuit. (Be sure the connector is free from water, grease,
dirt, bent terminals, etc.)
Certain systems and components, especially those related to OBD, may use a new style slide-lock-
ing type harness connector. For descripti on and how to disconnect, refer to EC-51, "
Diagnosis
Description".
Always route and secure the harnesses properly afte r work. The interference of the harness with a
bracket, etc. may cause the MIL to illu minate due to the short circuit.
Always connect rubber tubes properly after work. A misconnected or disconnected rubber tube may
cause the MIL to illuminate due to the malfunction of the EVAP system or fuel injection system, etc.
Always erase the unnecessary malfunction information (repairs completed) from the ECM and TCM
(Transmission control module) before re turning the vehicle to the customer.
General PrecautionsINFOID:0000000006217653
Always use a 12 volt battery as power source.
Never attempt to disconnect battery cables while engine is
running.
Before connecting or disconnecting the ECM harness con-
nector, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect negative bat-
tery cable. Failure to do so may damage the ECM because
battery voltage is applied to ECM even if ignition switch is
turned OFF.
Before removing parts, turn ig nition switch OFF and then dis-
connect battery ground cable.
Never disassemble ECM.
If a battery cable is disconnected, the memory will return to
the ECM value.
The ECM will now start to self-control at its initial value. Thus,
engine operation can vary slight ly in this case. However, this
is not an indication of a ma lfunction. Never replace parts
because of a slight variation.
If the battery is disconnected, the following emission-related
diagnostic information will be lost within 24 hours.

Knock Sensor

The knock sensor is attached to t he cylinder block. It senses engine
knocking using a piezoelectric element. A knocking vibration from
the cylinder block is sensed as vibrational pressure. This pressure is
converted into a voltage signal and sent to the ECM.
Low Fuel Pressure SensorINFOID:0000000006217684
The low fuel pressure sensor is installed to low fuel pressure piping
and measures the low fuel pressu re. The sensor transmits voltage
signal to the ECM. As the pressure increases, the voltage rises.
Low Pressure Fuel PumpINFOID:0000000006217685
The low pressure fuel pump is integrated with a fuel pressure regula-
tor and a fuel filter. This pump is build into the fuel tank.
ECM controls the low pressure fuel pump via FPCM.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)INFOID:0000000006217686
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is located on the combination
meter.
The MIL will illuminate when the ignition switch is turned ON without
the engine running. This is a bulb check.
When the engine is started, the MIL should turn off. If the MIL
remains illuminated, the on board diagnostic system has detected an
engine system malfunction.

ECM blinks MIL for about 10 seconds if all SRT codes are not set.
MALFUNCTION WARNING MODE
Description
In this function ECM turns on or blinks MIL when it det
ects a malfunction in the emission control system com-
ponents and/or the powertrain control components (which affe ct vehicle emissions) to inform the driver that a
malfunction has been detected.
Operation Procedure
1. Turn ignition switch ON.
2. Check that MIL illuminates. If it remains OFF, check MIL circuit. Refer to EC-515, "
Diagnosis Procedure".
3. Start engine and let it idle. For two trip detection logic diagnoses, ECM turns on MIL when it detects the same malfunction twice in
the two consecutive driving cycles.
For 1st trip detection logic diagnoses, ECM turns on MIL when it detects a malfunction in one driving cycle.
ECM blinks MIL when it detects a malfunction t hat may damage the three way catalyst (misfire).
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS MODE
Description
This function allows to indicate DTCs or 1st trip DTCs stored in ECM according to the number of times MIL is
blinking.
How to Set Self-diagnostic Results Mode
NOTE:
It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.
It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has a mal-
function.
After ignition switch is turned off, ECM is a lways released from the “Self-diagnostic results” mode.
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully releas ed, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it depressed for approx. 10 seconds until the
MIL starts blinking.
NOTE:
Do not release the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds if MIL starts blinking during this period. This blinking
is displaying SRT status and is continued for another 10 seconds.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal. ECM has entered to Self-diagnostic results mode.
