223Checks
Checking levels Check all of these levels regularly and top them up if necessary, unless other wise indicated.
If a level drops significantly, have the corresponding system checked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.
When working under the bonnet, take care, as cer tain areas of the engine may be extremely hot (risk of burns).
Oil level
The check is carried out either when
the ignition is switched on using theoil level indicator on the instrument panel, or using the dipstick.
This manual check will only be correct if the
vehicle is on level ground and the engine has
been off for more than 30 minutes.
After topping up the oil, the check when
switching on the ignition with the oil level
indicator in the instrument panel will only be
valid 30 minutes after topping up.
Engine oil change
Refer to the ser vicing booklet for details of the
interval for this operation.
In order to maintain the reliabilit
y of the engine
and emission control system, the use of
additives in the engine oil is prohibited.
Oil specifi cation
The oil must be the correct grade for your engine and conform to the manufacturer's
recommendations.
It is normal to top up the oil level between services. CITROËN recommends that you check the oil level and top up if necessary every 3 000 miles (5 000 kilometres).

Coolant level
The coolant level should be close
to the "MA X" mark but should never exceed it.
When the engine is warm, the
temperature of the coolant is regulated by thefan. This can operate with the ignition off.
On vehicles which are fitted with a par ticle
emission filter, the fan may operate after
the vehicle has been switched off, even if
the en
gine is cold.
Changing the coolant
The coolant does not have to be changed.
Fluid specifi cation
The coolant must conform to themanufacturer's recommendations.
Power steering fluid level
The power steering fluid level should
be close to the "MA X" mark. Unscrew
the cap, with the en
gine cold, to check the level. Th
e brake fluid level should be closeto the "MA X" mark. If it is not, check
the brake pad wear.
Brake fluid level
Changing the fl uid
Refer to the ser vicing booklet for details of the
interval for this operation.
Fluid specifi cation
The brake fluid must conform to themanufacturer's recommendations and meet
the DOT4 standard.
In addition, as the cooling system ispressurised, wait at least one hour after
switching off the engine before carrying out any work.To a v o i d a ny risk of scalding, unscrewthe cap by two turns to allow the pressure to drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and topup the level.

Checks
Fluid specifi cation
For optimum cleaning and to avoid freezing,
this fluid must not be topped up with or
replaced with plain water.
Screenwash and headlamp
wash fluid
In the case of vehicles fitted withheadlamp washers, the low fluid levelis indicated by an audible signal anda message in the instrument panelscreen.
Top up the reser voir when you stop the vehicle.
Avoid prolonged contact of used oil or fluids with the skin.
Most of these fluids are harmful to
health or indeed very corrosive.
Do not discard used oil or fluids into sewers or onto the ground.
Take used oil to a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop (France) or to anauthorised waste disposal site.
Used products
To p p i ng up
This additive must be topped up by a CITROËN
dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.
Diesel additive level
(Diesel engine with particle
emission filter)
A low additive level isindicated by illumination of
the service warning lamp, accompanied by an audiblewarning and a message in the instrument panel screen.

Checks
Battery
The battery does not require any maintenance.
However, check that the terminals
are clean and correctl
y tightened, particularly in summer and winter.
When carrying out work on the battery, refer
to the "Practical information" section for
details of the precautions to be taken before
disconnecting the battery and following its reconnection. The presence o
f this label, in particular with
the Stop & Start system, indicates the use of
a specific 12 V lead-acid battery with special
technology and specification, for which the
involvement of a CITROËN dealer or a qualified
workshop is required when replacin
g or
disconnecting the battery.
Failure to observe this recommendation mayshor ten the life of the battery.
Unless otherwise indicated, check these
components in accordance with the servicing
booklet and according to your engine.
Other wise, have them checked by a CITROËN
dealer or a qualified workshop.

Refer to the ser vicing booklet for
details of the replacement intervalsfor these components.
Depending on the environment (e.g.
dusty atmosphere) and the use of the vehicle (e.g. city driving), replace them twice as often if necessary (refer to the "Engines" section).
A clogged passenger compartment filter mayhave an adverse effect on the performance
of the air conditioning system and generate undesirable odours.
Air filter and passenger compartment filter
Replace the oil filter each time the
engine oil is changed.
Re
fer to the ser vicing booklet for
details of the replacement inter val for
this component.
Oil filter
Particle emission filter (Diesel)
The start of saturation of the particle filter is indicated by
the temporary illumination of
this warning lamp accompanied by a message in the multi-function screen.
As soon as the traffic conditions permit, regenerate the filter by driving at aspeed of at least 40 mph (60 km/h) until the warning lamp goes off.
If the warning lamp stays on, this indicates a low additive level.
On a new vehicle, the first par ticlefilter regeneration operations may beaccompanied by a "burning" smell, which is perfectly normal.
Following prolonged operation of thevehicle at very low speed or at idle, you may, in exceptional circumstances, notice the emission of water vapour atthe exhaust on acceleration. This does not affect the behaviour of the vehicle or the environment.

Manual gearbox
The gearbox does not require anymaintenance (no oil change).
Refer to the ser vicing booklet for the
details of the level checking interval
for this component.
6-speed electronic
gearbox system
The gearbox does not require anymaintenance (no oil change).
Refer to the servicing booklet for
details of the checking inter val for
this component.
Automatic gearbox
The gearbox does not require any
maintenance (no oil change).
Refer to the servicing booklet for
details of the level checking interval
for this component.Brake wear depends on the style
o
f driving, par ticularly in the case
of vehicles used in town, over shor t
distances. It ma
y be necessary to
have the condition of the brakes checked, even between vehicle services.
Unless there is a leak in the circuit, a drop in
the brake fluid level indicates that the brake pads are worn.
Brake pads
For information on checking brake
disc wear, contact a CITROËN dealer
or a qualified workshop.
Brake disc wear
Electric parking brake
This system does not require any routine servicing. However, in the
event of a problem, have the systemchecked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.
For more information, see "Driving - Electric parking brake - § Operating faults".
Only use products recommended by CITROËN or products of equivalent quality and specification.
In order to optimise the operationof units as impor tant as the braking system, CITROËN selects and offersvery specific products.
To a v o i d d a m aging the electrical units, the use of a high pressure washer in the engine compar tment is strictly prohibited .
