Operation
Side assist compares the distance and difference in speed of detected
vehicles with the speed of your vehicle . Whenever the difference in
speed and distance is registered as notab le if you were to change
lanes, a signa l light appears on the respect ive m irror .
The signa l can light up if you are passed by a vehicle or if you are
passing another vehicle.
If you pass another vehicle slowly (d ifference in speed less than 9
mph, or 15 km/h) , the signa l light will come on as soon as the other
vehicle is in your blind spot and is detected by side ass ist . When the
difference in speed is greater, the signal light wi ll not come on. •

Informational and alert stage signals
S ide assis t has two signa l st ages:
• the informational stage signal, and
• t he ale rt stage signal.
S ide assist helps you by using the appropr iate s ignal stage,
depending on whether or not you have activated the turn signal, and
thus have indicated that you are or are not changing lanes .
Informat ional stage signal
As long as you have not activated the turn signal, side assist informs
you of detected vehicles that are registered as being in a notable loca
tion if you were to change lanes . Wheneve r the detected vehicle 's
difference in speed and distance is registered by side assist as
notable, the signal l ight on the respective m irror produces muted
illumination .
Th e br ightness of the info rmationa l stage signal is designed no t to be
as intense, so that it does not interfere w ith your v iew of the road
when you are driving and have no in tention of chang ing lanes. When
you look in the outside mirror, you can clearly see the informat ional
stage signal.
Alert stage signal
Whe n you act ivate the tu rn s ignal, a nd side assist has de tected a
vehicle in a notable location on that particular side, the signal light on
this side mirro r flashes b rightly. The repeated brief and bright
flash ing of the alert stage signal reminds you to carefully check
traffic to the rear in the outside mirror and over your shoulder, so t hat
you can safely complete the lane change~

Side assist cannot detect vehicles in curves with a turning radius of
less than 328 feet (100 m).
When driving through a curve, it is possible that side assist may
register a vehicle two lanes over, and the signal on the outside mirror
will light up.•

Side assist's detection area is designed to cover lanes of standard
w idth to the left and rig ht of your travel lane, depending on whether
you drive in the center of your lane or closer to the edge.
If you drive in narrow lanes, side assist's detectio n area may also
include other lanes -especially if you tend to drive on t he edge of your
lane => fig. 167. Under these conditions, vehicl es can also be
detected that are two lanes away, and side assist then could switch
between the informationa l and warning stage signals .
When driving in very wide lanes, vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are not inside the detection area .•

Groove
means the space between two adjacent tread ribs.
Load rating (code)
means the maximum load that a tire is rated to carry for a given infla
tion pressure. You may not find this information on all tires because
it is not required by law.
Maximum load rating
means the load rating fo r a tir e at the maximum permissible inflation
pressure for that tire.
Maximum loaded vehicle weight
means the sum of:
(a) Curb weight
(b) Accessory weight
(c) Vehicle capacity weight, and
(d) Production options weight
Maximum (permissible) inflation pressure
means the maximum cold inflation pressure to which a tire may be
inflated. Also called "maximum inflation pressure."
Normal occupant weight
means 150 lbs. (68 kilograms) times the number of occupants seated
in the vehicle up to the total seating capacity of your vehicle.
Occupant distribution
means distr ibution of occupants in a vehicle .
Outer diameter
means the overall diameter of an inflated new tire.
Overall width
means the linear distance between the exteriors of the sidewalls of
an inflated tire, including elevations due to labeling, decorations, or
protective bands or ribs.
Ply
means a layer of rubber -coated paralle l cords.
Production options weight
means the combined weight of those installed regular production
options weigh ing over 5 lbs. (2.3 kg) in excess of those standard
items which they replace, not previously considered in curb weight or
accessory weight, including heavy duty brakes, ride levelers, roof
rack, heavy duty battery, and special trim.
Radial ply tire
means a pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the
beads are laid at substantially 90 degrees to the centerline of the
tread .
Recommended inflation pressure
see=> page 307, "Cold tire inflation pressure".
Reinforced tire
means a tire design to operate at higher loads and at higher inflation
pressures than the corresponding standard tire. Reinforced t ires may
be identified as "XL ", "x l", "EXTRA LOAD", or "RF" on the sidewall.
Rim
means a metal support for a tire or a tire and tube assembly upon
wh ich the tire beads are seated .
Rim diameter
means nominal diameter of the bead seat . If you change your wheel
size, you w ill have to purchase new tires to match the new rim diam
eter .
Rim size designation
means rim diameter and width.
Rim width
means nom inal distance between rim flanges.

Inco rrect wheel al ignment
Incorrect wheel alignment can cause excessive tire wear, impairing
the safety of the vehicle . If tires show excessive wear, have the wheel
alignment checked by an authorized Audi dealer or qualified wo rk
shop .
All Wheel Drive
Vehicles with quattro ® must always have tires of the same s ize,
constr uction and tread type . For details see~
page 257.

• Never drive a vehicle when the tread on any tire i s worn down
to the wear ind icators .
• Worn tire s are a s afety hazard, they do not grip w ell on wet
roads and increa se your risk of "h ydroplaning" and lo ss of control.
• Always keep chemical s that can cause tir e damage, su ch as
grea se , oil , gasoline and brake flu id away from tires .
• Tires age even if they ar e not b eing used and can fail suddenly ,
especially at high speeds. Tires that are more than 6 year s old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at
lower speeds .
• Never mount u sed tir es on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history. " Old used tires m ay have been damaged
even though the damage cannot be seen that can lead to sudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control. •
New tires and replacing tires and wheels
New tires and wheels have to be broken in.

The tires and rims are essential parts of the vehicle's design . The tires
and rims approved by Audi are specially matched to the characteris
tics of the vehicle and can make a major contribution to good road
holding and safe handling when in good condition and properly
inflated =>
&.
We recommend that all work on tires and wheels be performed by an
authorized Audi dealer. They are familiar with recommended proce
dures and have the necessary special tools and spare parts as well as
the proper facilities for disposing of the old tires.
Authorized Audi dealers have the necessary information about tech
nical requirements for installing or changing tires and rims.
Replacing tires and wheels
Tires should be replaced at least in pairs and not individually (for
example both front tires or both rear tires together).
Be sure to read and heed the information to the tire pressure moni
toring system* =>
page 320.
Always buy replacement radial tires that have the same specifications
as the tires approved for your vehicle by Audi. Replacement tires must
always have the same load rating specification as the original equip
ment or approved optional tires listed in the table=>
page 310.
Audi-approved specification tires are specially matched to your
vehicle and its load limits, and can contribute to the important road-

holding, driving characteristics, and safety of the vehicle. The table
(=>
page 310) lists specifications of the tires approved for the Audi
models covered by your Owner's Literature.
The tire pressure label located either on driver's side B-pillar or inside
the fuel filler flap (=>
page 310, fig. 253) lists the specifications of
the original equipment tires installed on your vehicle at the time it
was manufactured.
Federal law requires tire manufacturers to place standardized infor
mation on the sidewall of all tires=>
page 318, fig. 256. This infor
mation identifies and describes the fundamental characteristics, the
quality grade of the tire and also provides a tire identification number
for safety standard certification and in case of a recall.
Tire specifications
Knowledge of tire specifications makes it easier to choose the correct
tires. Radial tires have the tire specifications marked on the sidewall,
for example:
255/45 R 18 99 H
This contains the following information:
P Indicates the tire is for passenger cars (where applicable)
255 Nominal tire width in mm of the tire from sidewall edge to side-
wall edge. In general, the larger the number, the wider the tire
45 Height/width ratio in percent (aspect ratio)
R Tire construction: Radial
18 Rim diameter code (in inches)
99 Load rating code
H Speed rating letter code
XL (or "xl", "EXTRA LOAD" or "RF") indicates that the tire is a "Rein
forced" or an "Extra Load" tire

• For techn ica l reasons, it is not generally poss ible to use the wheel
rims from other vehicles. This can hold true for whee ls of the same
vehicle type.
• If the spare tire is different from the tires that you have mounted
on your vehicle (for example w inter tires or wide profile tires), then
use the spare tire for a short period of time only and drive with extra
care . Replace the flat tire with the tire match ing the others on your
vehicle as soon as possible.
• If you should put different wheels and tires on your vehicle (e.g.
winter wheels and tires), you must be certain that the wheels and
tires are compatib le with the tir e pressure monito ring system*.
Otherwise the system will register a malfunction and a fault message
w ill be displayed . For more info rmation, contact your Audi dealer .

• When install ing new tires, be careful not to damage the valves or
tire pressure monitoring system* sensors.
• Never drive without the valve stem cap. The valves could get
damaged .
• If the sensors must be replaced, then the valve must also be
replaced at the same time.

All passenger car tires must conform to Federal Safety Requirements
in addition to these grades.
Tread wear
The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate
of the tir e when tested under controlled conditions on a specified
government test course.
For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one half (11/2)
times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires depends upon the actua l conditions
of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm
due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differences in
road characte ristics and climate .
Traction
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, Band C. Those
grades represent the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement as
measured under con trolled conditions on specified government test
surfaces of asphalt and concrete . A tire marked C may have poor trac
tion performance =>& .
Temperature
The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing
the tire's resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissi
pate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified
indoor laboratory test wheel.
Susta ined high temperature can cause the materia l of the tire to
degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead
to sudden tire failure=>& .
The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all
passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle

Wheel bolts
Wheel b olts must al ways be tig hten ed to the correct
torque.
Th e design of whee l bo lts is matc hed to the facto ry installed rims. If
different r ims are fitted, the correct wheel bolts wi th t he r igh t lengt h
and correctly s haped bolt heads must be used . Thi s ensures that
w heels are fi tted secure ly and tha t the br ake system f unc tion s
correctly.
I n cert ain circumst ances, yo u may not us e wheel bolts from a
different veh icle -even if it is the same model=>
page 363.
& WARNING
Improperly tightened or maintained wheel bolts can become
loose causing lo ss of control, a collision and serious per sonal
injury .
• Always keep the wheel bolts and the thread s in the wheel hub s
clean so the wheel bolts can turn easily and be properly tightened .
• Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel
hubs. They can become loose while d riving if greased or oiled , even
if tightened to the specified torque.
• Only use wheel bolts that belong to the rim being installed.
• Never use different wheels bolts on your vehicle.
• Always maintain the correct tightening torque for the wheel
bolts to reduce the risk of a wheel loss. If the tightening torque of
the wheel bolts is too low , they can loo sen and come out when the
vehicle is moving. If the tightening torque is too high, th e wheel

bolts and threads can be damaged and the wheel can become
loose .

Low aspect ratio tires
Your Audi is fa cto ry -equ ip ped wi th low aspec t ratio tires. These tire s
have been thorough ly tested and been selected specifically for your
mode l for the ir supe rb perfo rmance, roa d fee l an d han dling un der a
var iety of driv ing cond it ions. Ask your author ized Audi dea ler for
more deta ils.
Th e low a spect rat io of these tires is indica ted by a nu meral of
55 or
less
in the tire's size designation. The numeral represents the ratio of
t he t ire's s idewall heigh t in relat io n t o its t re ad wi dth expressed in
percentage. Conventiona l tires have a height/width ratio of 60 or
more .
The performance of low -aspect -ratio tires is particularly sen sitive to
improper inflation pressure. It is therefore important that low
aspect ratio tires are inflated to the specified pressure and that the
inflation pressure is regularly checked and mainta ined. Tire pres
s ure s should be checked at lea st once a month and always before a
long trip =>
page 313, "Checking tire pressure".
What you can do to avoid tire and rim damage
Low aspect ratio ti res can be damaged more easi ly by impact w ith
potholes, curbs, gull ies or ridges on the road, p articular ly if the tire is
