If your vehicle is fitted with an HDI engine, the fuel system must be primed if you run out of fuel; refer to the engine compar tment view on the "Diesel engine" page.
Running out of fuel (Diesel)
If the engine does not star t first time, don't keep trying. Operate the priming pump again, then the star ter motor.
Fill the fuel tank with at least five litres of diesel. Open the bonnet. If necessary, unclip the styling cover for access to the priming pump. Squeeze and release the priming pump repeatedly until resistance is felt (there may be resistance at the first press). Operate the star ter until the engine star ts (if the engine does not star t at the first attempt, wait around 15 seconds before trying again).
If the engine does not star t after a few attempts, operate the priming pump again then star t the engine. Clip the styling cover back in place. Close the bonnet.
1.6 litre Turbo HDI engine
Fill the fuel tank with at least five litres of Diesel. Open the bonnet. If necessary, unclip the style cover for access to the priming pump. Squeeze and release the priming pump repeatedly until fuel appears in the transparent pipe. Operate the star ter until the engine star ts (if the engine does not star t at the first attempt, wait around 15 seconds before trying again).
If the engine does not star t after a few attempts, operate the priming pump again then star t the engine. Put the style cover back in position and clip it in place. Close the bonnet.

Checking leve ls
Check all of these levels regularly and top them up if necessary, unless other wise indicated. If a level drops significantly, have the corresponding system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified wo rkshop.
When working under the bonnet, take care, as cer tain areas of the engine may be extremely hot (risk of burns).
Oil level
The check is carried out either when the ignition is switched on using the oil level indicator on the instrument panel, or using the dipstick. This manual check will only be correct if the vehicle is on level ground and the engine has been off for more than 30 minutes. After topping up the oil, the check when switching on the ignition with the oil level indicator in the instrument panel will only be valid 30 minutes after topping up.
Engine oil change
Refer to the Warranty and Maintenance Record for details of the inter val for this operation. In order to maintain the reliability of the engine and emission control system, the use of additives in the engine oil is prohibited.

The oil must be the correct grade for your engine and conform to the manufacturer's recommendations.
The brake fluid level should be close to the "MA X" mark. If it is not, check the brake pad wear.

The brake fluid must conform to the manufacturer's recommendations and meet the DOT4 standard.

The power steering fluid level should be close to the "MA X" mark. Unscrew the cap, with the engine cold, to
check the level.

The coolant level should be close to the "MA X" mark but should never exceed it. When the engine is warm, the temperature of the coolant is regulated by the fan. This can operate with the ignition off. On vehicles which are fitted with a par ticle emission filter, the fan may operate after the vehicle has been switched off, even if the engine is cold.
In addition, as the cooling system is pressurised, wait at least one hour after switching off the engine before carrying out any work. To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew the cap
by two turns to allow the pressure to drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and top up the level.
Changing the coolant
The coolant does not have to be changed.

For optimum cleaning and to avoid freezing, this fluid must not be topped up with or replaced with plain water.
Screenwash and headlamp

In the case of vehicles fitted with headlamp washers, the low fluid level is indicated by an audible signal and a message in the instrument panel screen. Top up the reser voir when you stop the vehicle.

Avoid prolonged contact of used oil or fluids with the skin. Most of these fluids are harmful to health or indeed very corrosive.
Do not discard used oil or fluids into sewers or onto the ground. Take used oil to a PEUGEOT dealer (France) or an authorised waste disposal site.

This additive must be topped up by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.

A low additive level is indicated by illumination of the ser vice warning lamp, accompanied by an audible warning and a message in the instrument panel screen.

Checks
Unless other wise indicated, check these components in accordance with the Warranty and Maintenance Record and according to your engine. Other wise, have them checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
Battery
The battery does not require any maintenance. However, check that the terminals are clean and correctly tightened, par ticularly in summer and winter. When carrying out work on the battery, refer to the "Practical information" section for details of the precautions to be taken before disconnecting the battery and following its reconnection.
Refer to the Warranty and Maintenance Record for details of the replacement inter vals for these components. Depending on the environment (e.g. dusty atmosphere) and the use of the vehicle (e.g. city driving), replace them twice as often if necessar y (refer to the "Engines" section). A dir ty passenger compar tment filter may have an adverse effect on the per formance of the air conditioning system and generate undesirable odours.
Air filter and passenger compartment filter
Replace the oil filter each time the engine oil is changed. Refer to the Warranty and Maintenance Record for details of the replacement inter val for this component.
Oil filter The presence of this label, in par ticular with the Stop & Star t system, indicates the use of a specific 12 V lead-acid battery with special technology and specification, for which the involvement of a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop is required when replacing or disconnecting the battery. Failure to obser ve this recommendation may shor ten the life of the battery.
Particle emission filter (Diesel)
Display of this warning lamp or a specific message, together with the ser vice warning lamp, indicates the start of saturation of the particle filter or low level in the Diesel additive reser voir.
As soon as the traffic conditions permit, regenerate the filter by driving at a speed of at least 40 mph (60 km/h) until the ser vice warning lamp goes off. If the ser vice warning lamp stays on, this indicates a low additive level. Have the additive reser voir topped up and the par ticle emission filter ser viced by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop. Following prolonged operation of the vehicle at very low speed or at idle, you may, in exceptional circumstances,
notice the emission of water vapour at the exhaust on acceleration. This does not affect the behaviour of the vehicle or the environment.
