We recommend that you do not smoke in the vehicle when the recirculating air
mode is operating since the smoke which is drawn at the evaporator from the interior of the vehicle forms deposits in the evapor
ator of the air conditioning system. This
produces a permanent odour when the air co
nditioning system is operating which can
only be eliminated through considerable
effort and expense (replacement of
compressor).Using the systemFig. 109 Climatic: Control elementsSetting temperature– Turn the control dial

Recirculated air mode In recirculated air mode air is sucked out of the interior of the vehicle and then fed back into the interior.Recirculated air mode prevents polluted air
outside the vehicle from getting into the
vehicle, for example when driving through a
tunnel or when standi
ng in a traffic jam.
Switching recirculated air mode on– Press the button
⇒page 99, fig. 109
the warning light lights up in the
button.
Switching recirculated air mode off– Press again the button - the warning light in the button goes out. The recirculated air mode is switched off automatically if the air distribution control is in position
⇒page 99, fig. 109
. You can also switch recirculated air mode on
again from this setting by re
peatedly pressing button .
WARNING
You should not leave recirculated air mode on over a longer period of time, as “stale” air may result in fatigue in the driver and occupants, divert your atten- tion and also cause the windows to mist up. The risk of having an accident increases. Switch recirculated air mode off as soon as the windows begin misting up.Using the air conditioning system economicallyThe compressor on the air conditioning syst
em uses power from the engine when in
cooling mode which will effect the fuel consumption. It recommended to open the windows or the
doors of a vehicle for which the interior
has been strongly heated through the effect
of direct sunlight in order to allow the
heated air to escape. The cooling system should not be switched
on while travelling when the window is
open.
The desired interior temperature can also be achieved without switching in the cooling system just by switching to fresh air mode.
For the sake of the environment
When you economize on fuel, you
also reduce pollutant emissions.
Operational problemsIf the cooling system does not operate at outside temperatures higher than +5 °C, there is a problem in the system. The reasons for this may be:•
The fuse on the air conditioning system has blown. Check the fuse, replace it if
necessary
⇒page 233.
•
The cooling system has switched off auto
matically for a short time because the
coolant temperature of the engine is too hot
⇒page 17.
If you are not able to rectify the operational
problem yourself, or if the cooling capacity
decreases, switch the cooling system off. Contact a specialist garage.Climatronic* (automatic air conditioning)Description The Climatronic system is a combination of an automatic heating, fresh air and cooling system which provides optimal comfort for the occu-pants of the car.The Climatronic maintains fully automatically a convenience temperature. This is achieved by automatically varying the temperature of the outflowing air, the blower stages and the air distribution. The system also takes into account sunlight which elim- inates the need to alter the settings manually. The
automatic mode

ensures maximum wellbeing of the occupants at all times of the year. Description of Climatronic system The cooling operates only if the following conditions are met:•

switched on.
If the cooling system is switched on, the temperature and air humidity drops in the vehicle. The wellbeing of the occupants of the
car is enhanced as a result of this partic-
ularly at high outside temperatures and a
high air humidity. The system prevents the
windows misting up during the cold season of the year. The heating effect is dependent upon the c
oolant temperature, thus
full heat output
only occurs when the engine has reached its operating temperature. It is possible to briefly activate recirculat
ed air mode in order to enhance the cooling
effect
⇒page 104.
The air inlet in front of the windscreen must
be free of ice, snow or leaves in order to
ensure that the heating and cooling systems operate properly. The AC compressor is switched off at a hi
gh coolant temperature in order to provide
cooling at a high load of the engine. After switching on the cooling
Condensation
from the evaporator of the air condi-
tioning may drip down and form a puddle be
low the vehicle. This is quite normal and
not an indication of a leak! Recommended setting for all periods of the year:•

4, so that the air flow is
directed slightly upwards.
WARNING
•
For your own safety and that of other road users, ensure that all the
windows are free of ice, snow and mistin
g. Please familiarize yourself about
how to correctly operate th
e heating and ventilation systems, how to demist
and defrost the windows, as well as with the cooling mode.•
You should not leave recirculated air mode on over a longer period of time,
as “stale” air may result in fatigue in the driver and occupants, divert your attention and also cause the windows to mist up. The risk of having an accident increases. Switch recirculated air mode off as soon as the windows begin misting up.

If the cooling system has not been switched on for a lengthy period, odours may
be produced at the evaporator because of
deposits. Switch the cooling system on at
least once a month for approximately 5 minut
es at the highest blower stage - also
during the cold season of the year - in order to remove such odours. Also open a window for a short time.•
We recommend that you do not smoke in

removal openings in the luggage compart-
ment.•
On vehicles equipped with a factory-fitted
radio* or navigation*, the information
of the Climatronic is also shown on the display. This function can be switched off, see operating instructions of the ra
dio* or the navigation system*.

– Press the button . In the right or left top corner a warning light lights up,
depending on which unit was last selected.
If the warning light in the top right corner of the button lights up, the Climatronic operates in “HIGH” mode. The “HIGH” mode is the standard setting of the Climatronic. When pressing again the button , the Cl
imatronic changes into the “LOW” mode
and the warning light in the top left corner lights up. The Climatronic uses only in this mode the lower blower speed. However taking
into account the no
ise level, this is
more comfortable, yet be aware that the effectiveness of the air conditioning system is reduced particularly if th
e vehicle is fully occupied.
By pressing again the button , yo
u change into the “HIGH” mode.
The automatic mode is switched off by pres
sing the button for the air distribution or
increasing or decreasing the blower speed. The temperature is nevertheless regulated.

. The warning light lights up in the button.
– When you again press the switch , the cooling system is switched off. The
warning light in the button goes out. Only
the function of the ventilation remains
active when no lower temperature than the outside temperature can be reached.
Setting temperatureYou can separate the interior temperature for the left and right side separately. – You can set the temperature for both sides
after switching on the ignition with the
control dial .
– If you wish to set the temperature for the right side, turn the control dial . The
warning light in the button lights up,
this indicates that differing tempera-
tures for the left and right side can be set.
If the warning light in the button lights up, the temperature for both sides cannot be set with the control dial . You can
reinitiate this functi
on by pressing the
button . The warning light in the button which indicates the possibility to set differing temperatures for the left and right side, goes out. You can set the interior temperature between +18°C and +26°C. The interior temper- ature is regulated automatically within this
range. If you chose a temperature lower
than +18°C, a blue symbol lights up at the
start of the numerical
scale. If you chose a
temperature higher than +26°C, a red symbol lights up at the end of the numerical scale. In both limit positions the Climatroni
c operates at maximum cooling or heating
capacity, respectively. The temperatur
e is not controlled in this case.
Lengthy and uneven distri
bution of the air flow out of the vents (in particular at the leg
area) and large differences in temperature, for example when getting out of the vehicle, can result in chills in sensitive persons.
Recirculated air mode In recirculated air mode air is sucked out of the interior of the vehicle and then fed back into the interior. When the automatic air distribution control is switched on, an air quality sensor measures the concentration of pollutants in the drawn-in air.Recirculated air mode prevents polluted air outside the vehicle from getting into the vehicle, for example when driving through a tunn
el or when standing in a traffic jam. If
a considerable increase in concentration of
pollutants is recognized by the air quality
sensor, when the automatic air distribution co
ntrol is switched on, the air distribution
control will temporarily be switched off. If
the concentration of po
llutants decreases to
the normal level, the air distribution control
is automatically switched off so that fresh
air can be guided into
the vehicle interior.
Switching recirculated air mode on– Press the button repeatedly
until the warning light on the left side of the
button lights up.
Switch on automatic air distribution control– Press the button repeatedly
until the warning light on the right side of the
button lights up.
Switch off automatic air distribution control temporarily– If the air quality sensor does not switch on
the air distribution control automatically
when there is a nauseating smell, you can
switch it on yourself by pressing the
button *. The warning light lights up
in the button on the left side.
Switching recirculated air mode off– Press the button or press the button repetitively, until the warning
lights in the button go out.
WARNING
You should not leave recirculated air mode on over a longer period of time, as “stale” air may result in fatigue in the driver and occupants, divert your atten-

Towing a trailer
190
Towing a trailerTo w i n g a t r a i l e rTechnical requirements The towing device must satisfy certain technical requirements.Your vehicle is designed primarily for tr
ansporting persons and luggage. It can,
however, also be used for towing a traile
r - provided certain technical equipment is
fitted. If your vehicle has already been supplied with a
factory-fitted
towing device then
everything that is nece
ssary for towing a trailer in technical terms, and in terms of the
law, has already been taken into account. Your vehicle is fitted with a 13-pin power so
cket for the electrical connection between
the vehicle and trailer. If the tr
ailer which you wish to tow has a
7-pin connector
, you
can use a suitable adapter
14) from Škoda original accessories.
This work must be carried out in accordance
with the manufacturer's specifications if
a towing device is retrofitted. Authorised Škoda Service Partners are familiar with details relating to retrofitting a towing device and for any necessary
modifications to the cooling system.
WARNING
We recommend that you have the towing device from Škoda original accesso- ries installed by an authorised Škoda Serv
ice Partner. He is familiar with all the
relevant details relating to retrofitting such equipment. There is a risk of an accident if the towing device is not properly fitted!
General Maintenance There are a number of points to pay attention to when towing a trailer.Trailer load The permissible trailer load must on no account be exceeded. You can negotiate appropriately steeper inclin
es and descents if you do not make full
use of the permissible trailer load. The trailer loads specified only apply for
altitudes
up to 1 000 metres above mean sea
level. The fact that the engi
ne power output drops with increasing height due to a
lowering of air pressure and thus the abil
ity to climb, means that the towed weight
must be reduced by 10% for every further increase of 1 000 metres in height above sea level. The towed weight is the weight of the (laden) vehicle and the (laden) trailer together. One should take this into account
before driving up to higher altitudes.
The trailer and drawbar load information on the type plate of the towing device are merely test data for the towing device. The data relating to your vehicle, which is often less than this test data, can be found in your vehicle registration documents. Distribution of the load Distribute the load in the trailer in such a
way that any heavy items are located as close
as possible to the axle. Secure th
e items to preven
t them slipping.
Tyre pressure Correct the tyre inflation pressure on yo
ur vehicle for that of “fully laden”,
⇒page 215.
The inflation pressure of the tyres fitted to
the trailer adjust in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendation. Exterior mirrors You have to have additional ex
terior mirrors fitted if you are not able to see the traffic
behind the trailer with the standard rear-view mirrors. Both exterior mirrors should be attached to folding arms. Adjust the mirrors so that they provide you with an adequate field of view to the rear.
14)In some countries the adapter is supplied with the towing device.sgg.6.book Page 190 Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:32 PM

Headlights Before starting off with a hitched trailer, also check the setting of the headlights. Alter the setting as necessary with the ai
d of the headlight beam adjuster
⇒page 58.
Detachable ball head The ball rod is detachable on vehicles which
feature a factory-fitted
towing device. It is
stowed together with separate fitting instru
ctions in the spare wheel well in the luggage
compartment of the vehicle. Further information on the towing device
⇒page 192.
Note
•
We recommend that you also have your
vehicle inspected between service inter-
vals if you tow a trailer frequently.•
The handbrake on the towing vehicle must be put on when coupling and decou-
pling the trailer.Driving Tips Particular caution is required when towing a trailer.– Do not, as far as possible, drive with
your vehicle unladen and the trailer laden.
– Do not make full use of the legal maximum speeds. This applies in particular to
downhill sections.
– Apply the brakes in good time. – Keep a check on the coolant temperature gauge if the outside temperature is high. Distribution of weight The distribution of the weight
is very poor if your vehicle
is unladen and the trailer is
laden. Maintain a particularly low speed if you cannot avoid driving with this combina-tion. Driving speed Do not drive faster than 80 km/hour for safety reasons. This also applies for countries in which higher speeds are allowed.
The fact that the driving stability of the vehicle + trailer combination reduces with increasing speed means that the legally allowed speed should not be used when there are unfavourable road, weather or wind cond
itions, particularly near accident black
spots. You must always reduce your speed immediat
ely as soon as you detect even just the
slightest swaying
of the trailer. On no account attempt to stop the trailer from
“swaying” by accelerating. Apply the brakes in good time! If
the trailer is fitted with a
trailer brake
, apply the
brakes gently at first and then brake firmly. This will avoid brake jolts resulting from the trailer wheels locking. Shift down gears in good time before negotiating a downhill section to allow the engine to also act as a brake. Engine overheating Please keep a check on the coolant temperature gauge if you have to negotiate a lengthy slope in a low gear at a high engi
ne speed when the outside temperature is
very high
⇒page 17, “Coolant temperature gauge”.
If the needle of the coolant temperature gauge moves into the right-hand area or even the red area of the scale, reduce your speed immediately. Stop and switch off the engine if the warning light
in the instrument cluster begins flashing. Wait a few
minutes and check the level of coolant in the coolant expansion bottle
⇒page 207,
“Inspecting the coolant level”. Please refer to the following guidelines
⇒page 34, “Coolant temperature/ Coolant
quantity
”.
The coolant temperature can be reduced by switching on the heating.Any increase in the cooling effect of the coolant fan through shifting down a gear and increasing the engine speed is not possible
since the fan speed is independent of the
engine speed. One should also not drop a gear
for this reason when towing a trailer as
long as the engine can manage th
e slope without any drop in speed.
