- When using a portable fuel con- tainer be sure to place the con- tainer on the ground prior to refuelling. Static electricity dis- charge from the container canignite fuel vapours causing a fire. Once refuelling has begun, contact with the vehicle shouldbe maintained until the filling is complete. Use only portable fuel containers designed to carry andstore petrol.
- Do not use mobile phones
around a petrol station or whilerefuelling any vehicle. Electric current and/or electronic inter- ference from mobile phones canpotentially ignite fuel vapours causing a fire. If you must use your mobile phone use it in aplace away from the petrol sta- tion.- When refuelling always shut theengine off. Sparks produced by electrical components related tothe engine can ignite fuel vapours causing a fire. Always insure that the engine is OFF before andduring refuelling. Once refuel- ling is complete, check to make sure the fuel filler cap and doorare securely closed, before start- ing the engine.
- Do not light any fire around a petrol station. DO NOT usematches or a lighter and DO NOT SMOKE or leave a lit ciga-rette in your vehicle while at a petrol station especially during refuelling. Automotive fuel ishighly flammable and can, when ignited, result in explosion by flames.
- If a fire breaks out during refuel- ling, leave the vicinity of thevehicle, and immediately con-tact the manager of the petrol station or contact the police and local fire department. Followany safety instructions they pro- vide.

3TO START THE ENGINEBEFORE STARTING THE EN- GINE
C020A03S-DAT Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure
there are no flat tyres, puddles of oil or water or other indications of pos- sible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be
sure the hand brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights
are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and head- rest to be sure they are in their properpositions.
6. Lock all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure that all other occupants have fas-tened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to "ON", check that all appropriate warn- ing lights are operating and that you have sufficient fuel.
10.Check the operation of warning lights and all bulbs when key is in the "ON"position. C030A01A-AAT COMBINATION IGNITION SWITCH
o If your Hyundai is equipped with a
manual transaxle, place the shift lever in neutral and depress the clutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic
transaxle, place the shift lever in "P"(park).
o To start the engine, insert the igni- tion key and turn it to the "START"position. Release it as soon as the engine starts. Do not hold the key inthe "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
NOTE:
o For safety, the engine will not start if the clutch pedal is not depressed fully (Manual Transaxle) or the shift lever is not in "P" or "N" Position(Automatic Transaxle).
o The ignition key cannot be turned
from "ACC" position to "LOCK"position unless the shift lever is in the "P" (Park) position or the negative battery terminal is dis-connected from the battery. (For Automatic Transaxle)
!WARNING:
o Always wear appropriate shoes when operating your vehicle. Unsuitable shoes (high heels, skiboots, etc.) may interfere with your ability to use the brake and accel- erator pedal, and the clutch (ifinstalled).
o When you intend to park or stop
the vehicle with the engine on, becareful not to depress the accel- erator pedal for a long period of time. It may overheat the engine orexhaust system and cause fire.

o Never take the car out of gear and coast down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear.
o Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv- ing down a long hill, slow down andshift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-rev-ving the engine, which can causedamage.
o Slow down when you encounter
cross winds. This gives you muchbetter control of your car.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped
before you attempt to shift into re-verse. The transaxle can be dam- aged if you do not. To shift into reverse, depress the clutch, movethe shift lever to neutral, wait three seconds, then shift to the reverse position.
o Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Beespecially careful when braking,

C070B01A-DAT Using the Clutch The clutch should be pressed all the way to the floor before shifting, thenreleased slowly. The clutch pedal should fully return to the original posi- tion. Do not rest your foot on the clutchpedal while driving. This can cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutch to hold the car on anincline. This causes unnecessary wear. Use the hand brake to hold the car on an incline. Do not operate the clutchpedal rapidly and repeatedly.

NOTE:Depress the brake pedal and push the button when shifting. Push the button when shift- ing. The selector lever can be shifted freely.
For optimum fuel economy, acceler-ate gradually. The transaxle will auto- matically shift to the second, third andoverdrive gears.

The highly efficient Hyundai automatic transaxle has four forward speeds and one reverse speed. It has a conven-tional shift pattern as shown in the illustration. CAUTION:
Never shift into "R" or "P" position while the vehicle is moving.

from "P" or "N" to any other position with the accelerator pedal de- pressed.
o Never move the gear selector lever into "P" when the vehicle is in mo-tion.

o Turn the overdrive switch on for good
fuel economy and smooth driving. Ifengine braking is needed in the "D" range or if repeated upshifting and downshifting between the 3rd and4th gear is needed when climbing a gentle slope, it is recommended that the overdrive switch be turned off.Turn the overdrive switch back on immediately afterward.

During the rocking operation the vehicle maysuddenly move forward of back- ward as it becomes unstuck, caus- ing injury or damage to nearbypeople or objects.

C140A01A-DAT You can save fuel and get more kilo- meters from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "kanga- roo" starts or full-throttle shifts.Maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stoplights. Try to adjust your speed to that of theother traffic so you don't have to change speeds unnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever possible.Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoid unnecessary braking. Thisalso reduces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The
faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, is one of the most effective ways toreduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake. This can in-
crease fuel consumption and alsoincrease wear on these components.
o Use caution when parking on a hill.
Engage the hand brake and place the gear selector lever in "P" (automatic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your car is facing downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if it is required by other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your hand brake can freeze in the engaged position. This is most likely to hap- pen when there is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the hand brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you put the gear selector lever in "P" (automatic) or in first or re- verse gear (manual transaxle) and block the rear wheels so the car cannot roll. Then release the hand brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal. This can cause the transaxle to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or hand brake. o In addition, driving with your foot
resting on the brake pedal may cause the brakes to overheat, which re- duces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences.
o Take care of your tyres. Keep them inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either toomuch or too little, results in unneces- sary tyre wear. Check the tyre pres- sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving toofast over irregular surfaces Poor align- ment causes faster tyre wear and may also result in other problems aswell as greater fuel consumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For
better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain your car in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If youdrive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 5 for details).

C150A01A-DAT Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.
o Keep your car clean all over. For
maximum service, your Hyundai should be kept clean and free of corrosive materials. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. notbe allowed to accumulate on the underside of the car. This extra weight can result in increased fuel con-sumption and also contribute to cor- rosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces- sary weight in your car. Weight is anenemy of good fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready togo.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not
require extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very cold weather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period. o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en-
gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens to
you, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.

1. Tyres: Adjust the tyre inflation pressures to specification. Low tyre inflation pres- sures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tyres. Avoidusing worn or damaged tyres which may result in reduced traction or tyre failure. NOTE: Never exceed the maximum tyre inflation pressure shown on the tyres.
2. Fuel, engine coolant and en gine oil:
High speed travel consumes more fuel than urban motoring. Do not forget tocheck both engine coolant and engine oil.
3. Drive belt: A loose or damaged drive belt may result in overheating of the engine.TRAILER OR VEHICLE TOW- ING
