The air conditioning automatically maintains the selected
temperature in the vehicleinterior throughout each
se aso n.

We recomme nd the following setting:
Rotate the knob=> fig. 93 @to th e right to switch on the
air conditioning.
Set t he temperature to 72 °F ( 22 °Cl.
Press th e !AUTO ]=> fig . 93 button.
Using the previously recommended setting is the quickest way to
achieve a comfortable climate in the vehicle . T his setting should
therefore on ly be changed when persona l comfort levels or certain
circumstances require it .
The climate contr ols are a combination of automatic heating and
ventilation systems and a cooling system which dehumidifies and coo ls the a ir inside the veh ic le .
The climate controls automa tically ma intain a temperature once it
has been set . T he temperature of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air volume) and air dis tribution are also automa tica lly adjusted . The
system also takes into account strong sunshine so that manual
adjustment is no t necessary. So in al most a ll cases,
automatic mode
offers the best conditions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year~

Please note :
In cooling mode, relative humidity in the interior is reduced. This
prevents the w indows from fogging up.
When relative humidity and temperatures outside are high,
conden
sate
can drip from the air conditioning evaporator and form a poo l
of water under the vehicle . This is normal and not an indication of a
leak!
When outside temperatures are low, the fan does not switch to a
higher speed until the coolant has reached an adequate tempera
ture, with the exception of the defrost setting .
When accelerating at wide -open throttle, the air conditioning
compressor is temporarily switched off to maintain full engine
power .
I n order to ensure eng ine cooling under extreme engine loads, the
compressor is switched off if coolant temperatures climb too high. _,,,
Functions are set by turning the rotary knob or switched on and off
by tapping the buttons. The LED in the buttons illuminates when the
function is active .

The pollutant filter (particle filter) ensures that contaminants in the
outside air (such as dust or po llen) are grea tly reduced or stopped.
T he air is also filtered in recirculation mode.
The pollutant fil ter e lement must be changed according to the inter
vals specified in the maintenance schedu le so that the air condi
tioning system's performance is not adversely affected.
If the fil ter's effectiveness is weakened by driving the vehicle in
areas with heavi ly polluted outside air, the filter element should also
be changed in between the listed services .

• I f you suspect that the climate contro ls have been damaged ,
switch the system off to avoid damaging it , and have it inspected by
an authorized Audi dealer.
• Audi climate control system repairs require specia l expertise and
the proper tools. You shou ld contact an authorized Audi dealer in
the event of malfunct ions.
[ i ] Tip s
• To avoid adversely affecting heating and cooling performance
and to prevent condensation on the windows, the air intake in front
of the windsh ield must be free of ice, snow, and leaves.
• The air coming from the vents and circu lating through the en tire
interior is extracted through the out let slots in the side panels in the
luggage compartment. Make sure that the outlet slots are not
covered by clo th ing, etc.
• Climate control works most effectively if the windows are closed .
However , if the interior o f a parked vehicle is extremely hot from the
sun's rays, briefly opening the windows can speed up the cooling
process. •

Manual air recirculation mode[~]
The recirculation mode prevents polluted outside air from
entering the vehicle interior.
Switching on air recir culation

In recircu lation mode, air is drawn from the vehic le interior, filtered,
and recircu lated. We recommend that you se lect recircu lat ion mode
briefly ~ & under the fo llowing conditions:
When driving through a tunnel or i n a traffic jam so that exhaust
fumes and odors cannot enter the vehic le interior .
& WARNING
You should not u se the re circulat ion mode for an e xtended period
s ince no fre sh air i s drawn in , and with the air conditioning
s wit ched off the windows can fog up -this in crea se s the ris k of an
accident !•
A /C operation [AC)
Switching on A /C

Switching A /C off
- Press the [AC] button again.
The cooling system is switched on during A/C operation - the
heating and ven tilation system is controlled automatica lly.
I i ] Tips
If the LED in the switch stays on after A/C operation has been
switched off( = switching the A/C offl, there is a fau lt in an air condi
t ioning component. Please consult an authorized Audi dealer when
there is an operating prob lem .•

rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off .
If the eng ine is restarted within these 15 m inutes, the rear window
defogger is activated for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
t emperature. With a vehicle that is parked for a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be manually activated again.
<£> For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, you should switch the rear
window defogger o ff. The reduced power consumption has a bene
ficial effect on fue l consumption .•

The seat cushion and the seat back of the front seats can
be heated electrically.

Electronic differential lock (EOL)
The electronic differential lock monitors the rotational
speed of the drive wheels.
General notes
The electronic differential lock (EDU helps the car to start moving,
accelerate and climb a gradient on surfaces providing poor or
almost no grip. Without EDL, this would be difficult, if not impos
sible.
How the system works
Th e EDL operates automatically. It monitors the rotational speed of
the drive wheels on an axle with the help of the ABS sensors
=> page 189. If a noticeable difference in rotational speed between
the drive wheels on one axle is detected (e.g. on slippery ground
on
one side),
the spinning wheel is braked, thereby transferring power
to the other drive wheel or wheels (all-wheel drivel. This is done up
to a speed of about 60 mph (100 km/hl. Noises from the brake
system signal that wheel spin is being controlled.
Driving off
When driving off, always be sure to keep road conditions in mind as
you accelerate . If one drive wheel spins because it is on a surface
with less grip, gradually increase the pressure on the accelerator
pedal until the car starts to move. The wheel less able to transfer
power spins.
Overheating of brakes
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating if
subjected
to excessive loads, the EDL cuts out temporarily . The
vehicle remains operational and behaves in the same way as a
vehicle without EDL.
As soon as the brake has cooled down, EDL switches on again auto
matically.
& WARNING
• When accelerating on slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow,
always be careful when depressing the accelerator pedal. Even
with the EDL working, the drive wheels can spin and reduce your ability to control your car. -Risk of crash!
• The increased safety afforded by EDL does not mean that you
can take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.

If a fault occurs in the ABS, the EDL is also not functioning . This is
indicated by the ABS warning light=>
page 20. •
Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR)
The Anti-Slip Regulation System prevents the driven
wheels from spinning when the car is accelerating.
General notes
The Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) is integrated in the electronic
stabilization program (ESP). When the vehicle starts up and acceler
ates , the wheels are prevented from spinning by adjusting the
engine power to match the amount of grip available from the road
surface .
How the system works
ASR performs automatically, i.e. without the driver's intervention .
With the aid of the ABS sensors =>
page 189, ASR monitors the
speed of the driven wheels. If the wheels start to spin, the engine
torque is reduced automatically until the tires find enough grip to
lock onto the road surface . The system is active across the entire
speed range.
The ASR works in conjunction with the ABS. If a malfunction should
occur in the ABS, the ASR will also be out of action .

New brake pads
Remember that new brake pads do not have a full braking
effec t during the first 250 miles (400 kilometres) after they
are installed.
New brake pads have to be "burnished in" before they have optima l
grab=> &.
During the break -in period, you should avoid putting severe loads
on the brakes. Severe loads include, for example, sudden hard
braking, in particular at very high speeds or, for example, on moun
tain passes.

Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control system
(catalytic converter) is fu nctioning properly to ensure that
y o ur vehicle is running in an environmentally s ound
manner.
- Always use lead-free gasoline~ page 214, "Fuel supply".
- Never run the tank down a ll the way to empty.
- Never put too much motor o il in your engine~

The catalytic converter is an efficient "clean-up" device built into the
exhaust system of the vehicle . The cataly tic converter burns many
of the pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are re leased into the
atmosphere.
The exclusive use of un leaded fuel is critica lly important for the l ife
of the catalytic converter and proper functioning of the engine.

seriously degrade the performance of the catalytic converter.
• Do not exceed the correct engine oil level =>
page 225.
• Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes completely empty. The
engine could misfire . Unburned fuel could a lso get into the exhaust
system and this could cause the catalytic converter to overheat .
• Do not turn off the igni tion wh ile the vehicle is moving.
• Do not continue to operate your vehicle under these conditions,
as otherwise fue l can reach the cata lytic converter. This could resu lt
in overheating of the converter, requiring its replacement .
• To assure efficient operation of the Emiss ion Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with
the service recommendations in your Maintenance & Warranty
booklet.

one half. Never drive faster than the posted speed limit and weather
conditi ons permit. •
Reducing unnecessary Idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel.
- Shut the eng ine off when you are not driving the vehicle .
- Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the eng ine run at
idle.
I t makes sense to shut off the engine in traffic jams, when waiting
for trains to pass at railroad crossings, or at traffic lights that have long waits on red. Turning the engine off for just 30 -40 seconds
saves more fue l than is burned s tarting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully when it is
running at idle . However, wear and noxious emissions a re especial ly
high when the engine is warming up . So you should drive away as
soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high RPMs whi le
the engine is stil l warming up .

Do not leave engine idling unattended after starting . If warning
lights should come on to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded. Extended idl ing also produces heat, wh ich cou ld
result in overheating or other damage to the vehicle or other
property .•
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned en gine unnecessarily wastes a lot of fuel.

By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an Audi dea ler helps to
ensure that i t runs properly and economically . The conditio n of your
vehic le not only affects its safety and abi lity to hold its va lue, it also
affects
fuel consumption .
Check your oil each time you fill your tank.
The amount of oil used is related to engine load and speed .
I t is normal for the oi l consumption of a new eng ine to reach its
lowest va lue after a certain mi leage has been driven.
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometres) be fore you can proper ly assess o il consumpt ion.
This also applies to fuel consumption and engine output .

trips.

Safety belts
Only well-maintained safety belts work reliably when
needed.
H eavily soiled safety be lts may no t retract properly.
- Keep belts c lean.
- For clean ing, use a mild soa p an d wa ter so luti on. Let
belts dry thoroughly and away from d irect sunlight.
- D o not allo w inertia reel safe ty belts to retra ct before
they are com pletely dry .
- Check the condition of your safety belts
regularly .

Damaged safety belt s can break in a crash .
• Anything that might damage your safety belts could mean that
y ou and yo ur pas senger s would not be adequatel y prote cted in an
accident .
• Safety belt performance depend s on correct in stallation . Never
remove belt s from the vehicle to clean them.
• Do not u se chemi cal cleaning agents , blea ch or dyes . They h ave
c orrosive propertie s wh ich weaken the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety belts , in spect them for dam age . If
you discover damage, see your Audi dealer .
• Alway s read and heed all WARNINGS and the infor mation
=> page 200 . •
Engine compartment
Be es pecially caref ul when cle aning the engine compart
ment.

Plenum pan el
Remove leaves from the plenum pane l in front of the w indshield
under the engine hood. This prevents the water drain holes from
becoming blocked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
inter ior through the heating and ventilation ducts.
Corrosion protection
The engine compartment and transmission have been corrosion
pro tected at the factory.
Good anti -co rros io n treatment is very important, particularly in the
winter. If the vehicle is frequent ly driven on salt treated roads, the
enti re eng ine compartmen t and p lenum panel should be thor
oughly cleaned at the end of winter and retreated to prevent salt
damage . At the same time, the unde rside o f the vehicle shou ld be
washed as we ll.
I f the engine compartment is cleaned at any time with grease
removing solut ions
ll, or if you have the engine washed, the anti
corrosion treatment is almost a lways removed as well. It is therefore
essential to have a long-lasting corrosio n pro tec tion reapp lied to a ll
surfaces, seams, joints and components in the engine compart
ment .
