& WARNING
Changing the vehicle's suspension including use of unapproved
tire-rim combinations can change Advanced Airbag performance and increase the risk of serious personal injury in a crash.
• Never install suspension components that do not have the
same performance characteristics as the components originally
installed on your vehicle.
• Never use tire-rim combinations that have not been approved
by Audi.
& WARNING
Items stored between the safety belt buckle and the center
console can cause the sensors in the buckle to send the wrong
information to the electronic control module and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from working properly .
• Always make sure that nothing can interfere with the safety
belt buckles and that they are not obstructed . •

Side airbags
Description of side airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental protection
to properly restrained occupants.
Fig. 181 Side airbag
location in the driver's
seat
The side airbags are located in the sides of the front seat backrests
=> fig. 181 and the rear backrest* facing the doors. They are identi
fied by the word "AIRBAG".
The side airbag system basically consists of: • the electronic control module and external side impact sensors
• the two side airbags located in the sides of the front backrests
• two rear side airbags (as an ordered
option)
• the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster .
Th e airbag system is monitored electronically to make certain that
it is functioning properly at all times. Each time you turn on the igni
tion, the airbag system indicator light will come on for a few
seconds (self diagnostics).
The side airbag system supplements the safety belts and can help
to reduce the risk of injury to the driver's, front and rear*

passenger's upper torso on the side of the vehicle that is struck in a
side co llis ion. The airbag dep loys on ly in side impacts and only
when the vehic le acce leration registered by the control unit is high
enoug h. If this rate is below the reference va lue programmed into
the control unit, the side airbags will not be triggered, even though
the car may be badly damaged as a resu lt of the collision . It is not
possible to define an airbag trigger ing range that wi ll cover every
possible angle of impact, since the circumstances will vary consid
erab ly between one coll ision and another. I mportant factors
inc lude, for example, the nature (hard or soft) of the impacting
object, the angle o f impact, vehicle speed,
etc .=> page 205, "I m por
tant safety instructions on the side airbag system".
Aside from their normal safety funct ion, safety be lts work to help
keep the driver or front passenger in posit ion in the event of a side
collision so t hat the side airbags can provide protection.
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your safety belt. Rather, it
is part of the overa ll occupant restraint system in your vehicle .
A lways re m ember that t he side airbag system can on ly he lp to
protect you if you are wearing your safety be lt and wearing it prop
e rly. This is a nother reason why yo u should a lways wear you r safety
belts, not just because the law requires you to do
so=> page 176,
"General notes".
It is important to re m em ber that while the supp lemental side airbag
system is designed to reduce the like lihood of serious injuries, other
injuries, for example, swel ling, bru is ing, and minor abrasions can
a lso be associated with deployed side airbags. Remember too, side
a irbags wil l deploy o nly once and on ly in certain kinds of accidents
- your safety belts are a lways there to offer protection.
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack of vehic le damage are
not necessari ly an indication of over-sensitive or failed airbag acti
vation. In some collisions, both front and side airbags may inflate.
Reme mber too, that a irbags w ill dep loy on ly once and on ly in
certain kinds of col lisions -your safety belts are always there to
offer pro tec tion in those acc ide nts in whic h airbags are not
supposed to deploy or when they have already deployed. T
he s ide a irbag sys te m will not d eplo y:
• whe n the ign ition is turned off
• in side collisions when the acce leration measured by the sensor
is t oo low
• in front-end co llisions
• in rear-end co llisions
• in ro llovers .
I n some types of accidents the front airbags, side curta in airbags
and side airbags may be triggered together.
& WARNING
• Safety belt s and the airbag sy stem will only prov ide protection
when occupant s are in the proper se ating posit ion
=> page 2 05 .
• If the airbag indic ator light come s on when the vehicle i s being
u sed , ha ve the sy stem inspe cted immed iat ely by y our authorized
Audi d ealer . The airbag may not work properly when the vehicle
a cc eler ation in a side colli sion is high enough to acti vate the
airba g.•

When the system is triggered, the airbag is fi lled with propel lant gas
and breaks through a seam in the seat surface area marked
"AIRBAG" . It expands between the side trim panel and the
passenger. In order to he lp provide this additional protection, the
side airbag must inflate within a fraction o f a second a t very high
speed and with great force. The supplemental side airbag could
injure you if your seating pos it ion is not proper or upright or if items
are located in the area where the supplemental side airbag expands.
This app lies especially to
children => page 210, "Child Safety" .

The side curtain airbags inflate between the occupant and the
windows on the side of the vehicle that is struck in a side collision
~ fig . 184. When the system is triggered, the side curtain airbag is filled with
propellant gas and breaks through a seam above the front and rear
side windows identified by the AIRBAG label. In order to help
provide this additional protection, the side curtain airbag must
inflate within the blink of an eye at very high speed and with great
force. The side curtain airbag could injure you if your seating posi

Child Safety
Important things to know
Introduction
The rear sea t is generally the safest place in a collision.
The physica l princ iples of what happe ns w hen your ve hicle is in a
crash app ly also to children
=> page 178, "What happens to occu
p a nts no t wearing safe ty belts?" . But un lik e adu lts and teenagers,
their musc les and bones are not fu lly developed. In many respects
children are at greate r risk of ser ious injury in cras hes than adul ts .
Because c hildren 's bodies are not ful ly deve loped, they require
restraint systems esp ecially designed for their size, weight, and
body st ructure. Many countr ies a nd al l states of the U nited States
and provinces of Canada have laws requiring the use of approved
ch ild restrai nt sys te m s for infant s and smal l chil dren.
I n a fronta l crash at a speed of 20 -35 mph (30 -56 km/h) the forces
ac tin g on a 13 -p o un d (6 kg) infant wil l be m ore tha n 20 times the
weight of t he child . T his means the weight of the c hild would
suddenly be more than 260 pounds (120 kg). Under these condi
tions, on ly an appropriate child restraint properly used can reduce
the risk of serious injury. Child restraints, like adult safety belts,
m ust be use d properly t o be eff ec tive. Use d imp ro perly, they ca n
increase the risk of serious injury in an accident .

& WARNING
• Accident statistics have shown that children are generally safer
in the rear seat area than in the front seat ing position. Always
restrain any child age 12 and under in the rear.
• All vehicle o ccupants and especially children must be
restrained properly whenever riding in a vehicle . An unrestrained
or improperly restrained child could be injured by striking the inte
rior or by being ejected from the vehicle during a sudden
maneuver or impa ct. An unrestrained or improperly restrained
child is also at greater risk of injury or death through contact with
an inflating airbag .
• A suitable child restraint properly installed and used at one of
the rear seating positions prov ides the highest degree of protec
tion for infants and small children in most accident situations.
& WARNING
Children on the front se at of any car even with Advanced Airbags
can be seriously injured or even killed when an airbag inflates . A
child in a rearward -fa cing child safety seat in stalled on the front
passenger seat will be seriously injured and can be killed if the
front airbag inflates .
• The inflating airbag will hit the child safety seat or infant
carrier with great force and will smash the child safety seat and
c hild against the backrest , center arm rest , or door . ..,_
