Difinition:
The engine has a power variation under a steady throttle or cruise. The vehicle seems to speed up and slow down with no
change in the accelerator pedal.
Preliminary Checks • Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls.
• Ensure the driver understands the A/C compressor operation.
• Use the scan tool in order to make sure the Vehicle Speed parameter reading matches the vehicle speedometer.
• Inspect the ECM grounds for being clean, tight, and in their proper locations.
• Inspect that the harness connectors are correctly connected.
• Inspect the fuel type and quality.
• Inspect the programmed fuel injector ID code for each cylinder.
• Inspect the Scan Tool Data List in this section.
• Inspect the Service Bulletin.
Sensor Checks Inspect the engine control sensors for the following conditions. Refer to the Scan Tool
Data List in this section.
• Observe the Mass Air Flow (MAF) parameter for a skewed or slow MAF sensor.
• Observe the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor parameter with the engine OFF. The FRP Sensor should read 0.9 to 1.0 volt with the key ON and engine OFF after the
engine has stopped running for a minimum of 1 minute. If not, check for high
resistance in each circuit or for a skewed sensor.
• Observe the Fuel Rail Pressure and Desired Fuel Rail Pressure parameter between idle and W.O.T. (accelerator pedal full travel) in Neutral. Fuel Rail Pressure
parameter should follow within ± 5 MPa ( ± 725 psi) quick enough.
• Observe the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP). APP parameter should change linearly from 0 to 100% according to the accelerator pedal operation.
Fuel System Checks Inspect the fuel system for the following conditions. Refer to Fuel System Check chart
and appropriate procedure in the Fuel System section.
• Air in the fuel system.
• Water contamination in the fuel.
• Fuel waxing or icing.
• Fuel filter indicator lamp is continuously or frequently turned ON with engine run.
• In-tank fuel pump operation. Refer to In-tank Fuel Pump System Check in this section.
• Fuel leak off from the fuel pressure limiter valve and fuel injectors.
• Fuel lines between the fuel tank and fuel supply pump for being crushed, kinked, tightness, cracks and plugged.
• A plugged fuel tank vent valve and hose.
• Inside the fuel tank for any foreign material that may be getting drawn into the fuel line pickup causing a blocked condition.
• Fuel supply pump operation.
Notice: The fuel supply pump must be timed to the engine and adjustment value must
be learned to the ECM.
• Perform the Cylinder Balance Test with a scan tool.
• Perform the Injector Force Drive with a scan tool.

Lack of Power, Sluggishness or Sponginess

Definition:
The engine delivers less than expected power. There is little or no increase in speed when partially applying the accelerator
pedal.
Preliminary Checks • Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls.
• Compare the vehicle with a similar unit. Ensure the vehicle has an actual problem.
• Remove the air cleaner and check for dirt, or for air ducts being plugged or restricted. Replace as necessary.
• Have the tire sizes changed?
• Are excessively heavy loads being carried?
• Inspect for clutch slip.
• Inspect brake drag.
• Inspect for a proper transmission shift pattern and down shift operation.
• Inspect the fuel quality (cetane index).
• Inspect the engine oil level and quality.
• Use the scan tool in order to make sure the Vehicle Speed parameter reading matches the vehicle speedometer.
• Inspect the ECM grounds for being clean, tight, and in their proper locations.
• Inspect the programmed fuel injector ID code for each cylinder.
• Inspect the Scan Tool Data List in this section.
• Inspect the Service Bulletin.
Sensor Checks Inspect the engine control sensors for the following conditions. Refer to the Scan Tool
Data List in this section.
• Compare the Coolant Temperature with the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) and Fuel Temperature (FT) parameters on a cold engine condition. If the difference among
temperature reading is more than 5 °C (9 °F) on a cold engine, check for high
resistance in each circuit or for a skewed sensor.
Notice: The mass air flow (MAF) sensor is heated and as a result the IAT may indicate
a higher than normal intake air temperature if the ignition switch is being ON.
• Observe the MAF parameter for a skewed or slow MAF sensor.
• Observe the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor parameter with the engine OFF. The FRP Sensor should read 0.9 to 1.0 volt with the key ON and engine OFF after the
engine has stopped running for a minimum of 1 minute. If not, check for high
resistance in each circuit or for a skewed sensor.
• Observe the Fuel Rail Pressure and Desired Fuel Rail Pressure parameter between idle and W.O.T. (accelerator pedal full travel) in Neutral. Fuel Rail Pressure
parameter should follow within ± 5 MPa ( ± 725 psi) quick enough.
• Observe the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP). APP parameter should change linearly from 0 to 100% according to the accelerator pedal operation.
• Observe the Barometric Pressure (BARO) parameter. The BARO parameter should indicate near surrounding barometric pressure. Refer to Altitude vs. Barometric
Pressure. (Standard output)
• Observe the Boost Pressure and BARO with ignition ON and engine OFF. Both parameters should be within the 7.0 kPa (1.0 psi) each other. (High output)

Ignition System
• Inspect for moisture or corrosion around the spark plug / ignition coil area.
• Test the ignition coil voltage output. Refer to 6C1-3 Engine Management – V6 –
Service Operations.
• Remove and inspect the spark plugs. Refer to 6C1-3 Engine Management – V6 –
Service Operations.
NOTE
If the spark plugs are fouled, determine the cause of the fouling before

• Check for loose ignition coil ground circuit.

• Check the engine thermostat for proper operation and correct heat range. Refer to

3 Component Description and
Operation
3.1 Powertrain Interface Module
The powertrain interface module (PIM) is located behind the
right-hand lower hinge pillar trim.

The PIM performs the following functions:
• The PIM acts as the communication gateway between the GM LAN communications protocol and keyword 2000
protocol.
• The PIM converts analogue signals from the cruise control switches into digital serial data.
• The PIM upon inputs received from the engine control module (ECM), transmission control module (TCM) and
immobiliser control unit (ICU) controls the operation of the following instruments and warning lamps:
• Speedometer
• Tachometer
• Check Transmission Lamp
• 3
rd Gear Start Lamp
• Power Mode Switch Lamp
• Automatic Transmission Oil Temp Lamp
• Cruise Set Lamp
• Oil Pressure Lamp
• Service Vehicle Soon (SVS) Lamp

• The PIM is responsible for authenticating the immobiliser control unit (ICU) prior to the engine control module
(ECM) authenticating the PIM. If any of these authentication processes fail, the vehicle will not start. For further
information on the immobiliser system, refer to 11A Immobiliser System.

3. Remove the neutral start switch (Mode switch). Unstake the lock washer.
Remove the nut and bolt, and then remove the
neutral start switch.

Reassembly
1. Install a new gasket and the extension housing(4×2) to the transmission case.
Torque: 36 N·m (3.7 kgf·m/27 Ib ·ft)
2. Install the speedometer driven gear, plate, and speedometer sensor (4 ×2).
Torque:
Plate bolt – 15 N·m (1.5 kgf·m/11 Ib ·ft)
Speedometer sensor – 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m/18 Ib ·ft)
3. Install the adapter housing (4 ×4).
Remove any gasket material on the contacting
surfaces of the adapter housing and transmission
case.

Apply liquid gasket (TB1281 –B or its equivalent)
(1) and install the apply gaskets (2) to the adapter
housing as shown in the figure.
Install the adapter housing to the transmission
case.
Torque: 36 N·m (3.7 kgf·m/27 Ib ·ft)
4. Install the neutral start switch. Using the transmission select lever, fully turn the
manual valve lever shaft back and return two
notches.
It is now in neutral.
Insert the neutral start switch onto the manual
valve lever shaft and temporarily tighten the
adjusting bolt.
Install the lock washer and nut.
Torque: 7 N·m (0.7 kgf·m/61 Ib ·in)
Align the neutral standard line and the switch
groove and tighten the adjusting bolt.
Torque: 13 N·m (1.3 kgf·m/113 Ib ·in)
Bend the tabs of the lock washer.
NOTE: Bend at least two of the lock washer tabs.

5. Install the oil temperature sensor to the transmission case.
Torque: 15 N·m (1.5 kgf·m/11 Ib ·ft)
