Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WARNING:
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.
Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.
Precautions for Procedures without Cowl Top CoverNFS000RP
When performing the procedure after removing cowl top cover, cover
the lower end of windshield with urethane, etc.
Precautions for Brake SystemNFS000RQ
Clean dust on front brake and rear brake with a vacuum dust collector. Do not blow with compressed air.
Recommended fluid is brake fluid “DOT 3”. Refer to MA-12, "Fluids and Lubricants" .
Never reuse drained brake fluid.
Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas; it may cause paint damage. If brake fluid is splashed
on painted areas, wash it away with water immediately.
Use clean brake fluid, to clean or wash all parts of master cylinder and disc brake caliper, etc.
Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic system.
Use flare nut torque wrench when installing brake tube.
When installing brake tube and hose, be sure to check torque.
Before working, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect con-
nectors of ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) or battery
cable from the negative terminal.
Burnish the brake contact surfaces after refinishing or replacing
rotors, after replacing pads, or if a soft pedal occurs at very low
mileage. Refer to BR-27, "
BRAKE BURNISHING PROCE-
DURE" (front disc brake), BR-33, "BRAKE BURNISHING PRO-
CEDURE" (rear disc brake).
WARNING:
Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe with a dust collector.

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front

Precautions for Brake SystemNFS000Q0
Recommended fluid is brake fluid “DOT 3”. Refer to MA-12, "RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND LUBRI-
CANTS" .
Do not reuse drained brake fluid.
Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted surface of body. If brake fluid is splashed on painted sur-
faces of body immediately wipe off then with cloth and then wash it away with water.
Do not use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic system.
Use a flare nut wrench when removing flare nuts, and use a flare
nut crowfoot and torque wrench when tighten brake tube flare
nuts.
When installing brake tubes, be sure to check torque.
Brake system is an important safety part. If a brake fluid leak is
detected, always disassemble the affected part. If a malfunction
is detected, replace part with a new one.
Before working, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect con-
nectors of ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) or battery
negative terminal.
WARNING:
Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe with a dust collector.

3. Attach liquid gasket tube to the tube presser (commercial ser-
vice tool).
Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent. Refer to
GI-47, "
RECOMMENDED CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND
SEALANTS" .
4. Apply liquid gasket without breaks to the specified location with
the specified dimensions.
If there is a groove for the liquid gasket application, apply liq-
uid gasket to the groove.
As for the bolt holes, normally apply liquid gasket inside the
holes. Occasionally, it should be applied outside the holes.
Make sure to read the text of service manual.
Within five minutes of liquid gasket application, install the mat-
ing component.
If liquid gasket protrudes, wipe it off immediately.
Do not retighten after mounting bolts and nuts the installation.
After 30 minutes or more have passed from the installation, fill
engine oil and engine coolant.
CAUTION:
If there are specific instructions in this manual, observe them.

ASSEMBLY INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT
Before inspection and adjustment, drain gear oil.
Total Preload Torque
1. Rotate drive pinion back and forth 2 to 3 times to check for unusual noise and rotation malfunction.
2. Rotate drive pinion at least 20 times to check for smooth opera-
tion of the bearing.
3. Measure total preload with preload gauge.
NOTE:
Total preload torque = Pinion bearing preload torque + Side
bearing preload torque
If measured value is out of the specification, disassemble it to
check and adjust each part. Adjust the pinion bearing preload and side bearing preload.
Adjust the pinion bearing preload first, then adjust the side bearing preload.

When the preload torque is large
On pinion bearings: Decrease the drive pinion bearing adjusting washer and drive pinion
adjusting washer thickness. Refer to FFD-36, "
Drive Pinion Bearing
Adjusting Washer" and FFD-36, "Drive Pinion Adjusting Washer" .
On side bearings: Increase the side bearing adjusting shim thickness. Refer to FFD-36,
"Side Bearing Adjusting Shim" .
When the preload torque is small
On pinion bearings: Increase the drive pinion bearing adjusting washer and drive pinion
adjusting washer thickness. Refer to FFD-36, "
Drive Pinion Bearing
Adjusting Washer" and FFD-36, "Drive Pinion Adjusting Washer" .
On side bearings: Decrease the side bearing adjusting shim thickness. Refer to FFD-36,

23. Apply sealant to mating surface of carrier cover.
Use Genuine Silicone RTV or equivalent. Refer to GI-47,
"Recommended Chemical Products and Sealants" .
CAUTION:
Remove old sealant adhering to mounting surfaces. Also
remove any moisture, oil, or foreign material adhering to
application and mounting surfaces.
24. Install carrier cover on gear carrier and tighten mounting bolts
with the specified torque. Refer to FFD-15, "
COMPONENTS" .
Side Shaft Assembly
1. Using the drift, install side shaft oil seal.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse oil seal.
When installing, do not incline oil seal.
Apply multi-purpose grease onto oil seal lips, and gear
oil onto the circumference of oil seal.
2. Install dust sealed.
3. Support side shaft bearing with the drift, then press side shaft
(1) into the side shaft bearing using a press.
4. Apply multi-purpose grease to O-ring, and install it to extension
tube retainer.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse O-ring.

Make sure the mounting conditions (looseness, back lash) of each component and component conditions
(wear, damage) are normal.
INSPECTION OF UPPER LINK BALL JOINT END PLAY
1. Set front wheels in a straight-ahead position. Do not depress brake pedal.
2. Place an iron bar or similar tool between transverse link and steering knuckle.
3. Measure axial end play by prying it up and down.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage ball joint boot. Do not damage the installation position by applying
excessive force.
SHOCK ABSORBER INSPECTION
Check for oil leakage, damage and breakage of installation positions.
Wheel Alignment InspectionNES000IB
DESCRIPTION
Measure wheel alignment under unladen conditions.
NOTE:
“Unladen conditions” means that fuel, engine coolant, and lubricant are full. Spare tire, jack, hand tools and
mats are in designated positions.
PRELIMINARY CHECK
Check tires for improper air pressure and wear.
Check road wheels for runout. Refer to WT-6, "ROAD WHEEL" .
Check wheel bearing axial end play. Refer to FAX-5, "WHEEL BEARING INSPECTION" .
Check transverse link ball joint axial end play. Refer to FSU-14, "INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL" .
Check shock absorber operation.
Check each mounting part of axle and suspension for looseness and deformation.
Check each of suspension member, shock absorber, upper link and transverse link for cracks, deforma-
tion and other damage.
Check vehicle height (posture).
GENERAL INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
A four-wheel thrust alignment should be performed.
–This type of alignment is recommended for any NISSAN/INFINITI vehicle.
–The four-wheel “thrust” process helps ensure that the vehicle is properly aligned and the steering wheel is
centered.
–The alignment rack itself should be capable of accepting any NISSAN/INFINITI vehicle.
–The rack should be checked to ensure that it is level.
Make sure the machine is properly calibrated.
–Your alignment equipment should be regularly calibrated in order to give correct information.
–Check with the manufacturer of your specific equipment for their recommended Service/Calibration
