February, 2004)
AVENSIS REPAIR MANUAL SUPPLEMENT

PRE–CHECK
1. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
(a) Description
The ECM stores trouble codes when trouble occurs on
the vehicle.
The diagnosis system allows for reading of the trouble
codes from the DLC3. If the CRUISE main indicator light
does not come on after DTC check, it means a malfunc-
tion has occurred in the cruise control system.
Use the intelligent tester II to check and solve the prob-
lem.
(b) Check the DLC3.
The vehicle’s ECM uses ISO 9141–2 (Euro–OBD)/ISO
14230 (M–OBD) for communication protocol. The termi-
nal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with ISO 15031–3
and matches the ISO 9141–2/ISO 14230 format.
Symbols (Terminals No.)Terminal DescriptionConditionSpecified Condition

CG(4) – Body groundChassis groundAlwaysBelow 1 Ω
SG(5) – Body groundSignal groundAlwaysBelow 1 Ω
BAT(16) – Body groundBattery positiveAlways11 to 14 V
HINT:
If the display shows ”UNABLE TO CONNECT TO VEHICLE” af-
ter connecting the intelligent tester II to the DLC3 and turning
the ignition to the ON position, there is a problem with either the
vehicle or the tool. (Intelligent tester ll only)
If communication is normal when connecting the tool to
another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 on the original vehicle.
If communication is still not possible when connecting the
tool to another vehicle, it suggests the problem is the
tool’s own. In this case, consult Service Department listed
in the tool’s instruction manual.

DTC P2769 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID
CIRCUIT LOW (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL)
DTC P2770 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID
CIRCUIT HIGH (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The shift solenoid valve SL is turned ”ON” and ”OFF” by signals from the ECM in order to control the hydraulic
pressure operation, the lock–up relay valve, which then the controls operation of the lock–up clutch.
DTC No.DTC Detection ConditionTrouble Area

ECM
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
Based on the signals from the Throttle Position Sensor, the Airflow Meter and the Crankshaft Position Sen-
sor, the ECM sends a signal to the shift solenoid valve SL to regulate the hydraulic pressure and provide
smoother gearshifts. The shift solenoid valve SL responds to commands from the ECM. The valve controls
the lock–up relay valve to perform the torque–converter lock–up function. If the ECM detects an open or
short circuit for shift solenoid valve SL, it will illuminate the MIL.

DTC P0999 SHIFT SOLENOID ”F” CONTROL CIRCUIT HIGH (SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SB)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Shift solenoid valve SB controls the 2nd brake (B1) and 1st and reverse brake pressures and performs the
1st and 2nd engine brake control.
Fail safe function:
S shift control prohibition.
On activating the fail–safe function during S shift, the driving mode\
turns to the normal D position.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM commands gear shifts by turning the shift solenoid valves ”ON/OF\
F”. When there is an open or
short circuit in any shift solenoid valve circuit, the ECM detects the problem and illuminates the MIL and
stores the DTC. And the ECM performs the fail–safe function and turns the o\
ther shift solenoid valves in good
condition ”ON/OFF” (In case of an open or short circuit, the ECM stops sen\
ding current to the circuit.)
