INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
SRead freeze frame data usingthe hand−held tester.Freeze frame data records the engine conditions
when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the
vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air−fuel ratio was lean or
rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
SAfter engine warm−up, DTC P0488 malfunction is set1second or more passed after quickly accelerat-
ing the engine from idling.

”A” CIRCUIT LOW
DTC P0406 EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SENSOR
”A” CIRCUIT HIGH
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The EGR valve position sensor is mounted on the EGR valve and used for detecting the lift amount of the
valve. The lift amount detected by the sensor is provided to the ECM as feedback, the ECM then regulates
the lift amount of the valve in accordance with engine running condition.

HINT:
After confirming DTC P0405 and P0406, check the EGR valve opening angle condition in the ”DIAGNOSIS

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
When output voltage of the EGR valve position sensor deviates
from the normal operating range (between 0.1 V and 4.9 V) for
more than 0.5 second, the ECM interprets this as malfunction
of the sensor circuit, and illuminates the CHK ENG.

DTC P0400 EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION FLOW
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases, and which is controlled to the proper volume to be suited every
driving condition. The recirculated gas mingles with the intake air, therefore the EGR system can slow down
engine combustion and let the combustion temperature down. This helps reduce a NOx emission.
In order to increase a circulatory efficiency, the ECM adjusts the lift amount of the EGR valve and intake
shutter valve (throttle valve).
