CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time application. It is an on-vehicle mul-
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Many elec-
tronic control units are equipped onto a vehicle, and each control unit shares information and links with other
control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected with 2
communication lines (CAN H line, CAN L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less wiring.
Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.

TROUBLE DIAGNOSES FOR SYMPTOMS
21. TCM Self-diagnosis Does Not Activate (PNP & Overdrive Control Switches,
and Throttle Position Sensor Circuit Checks)
ECS004VM
SYMPTOM:
O/D OFF indicator lamp does not come on in TCM self-diagnostic procedure even if the lamp circuit is
good.
DESCRIPTION
lPNP switch
The PNP switch assembly includes a transmission position switch. The transmission position switch
detects the selector lever position and sends a signal to the TCM.
lOverdrive control switch
Detects the overdrive control switch position (ON or OFF) and sends a signal to the TCM.
lThrottle position sensor *
*: This sensor means accelerator pedal position (APP) senror.
Electric throttle control actuator consists of throttle control motor, acceleration pedal position sensor, throt-
tle position sensor, etc. The actuator sends a signal to the TCM.

** : A/T COMM LINE means CAN communication line.
Self-Diagnosis Code Confirmation ProcedureECS0 04 UL
After the repair, perform the following procedure to confirm the malfunction is eliminated.
WITH CONSULT-II
1. Turn ignition switch “ON”.
2. Select “DATA MONITOR” mode for “A/T” with CONSULT-II.
3. Wait at least 6 seconds or start engine and wait for at least 6
seconds.
WITHOUT CONSULT-II
1. Turn ignition switch “ON”.
2. Wait at least 6 seconds or start engine and wait at least 6 sec-
onds.
3. Perform self-diagnosis.
Refer to SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (NO TOOLS),
AT-273, "
Diagnostic Procedure Without CONSULT-II".

6. Remove control valve assembly by removing fixing bolts.
Bolt length, number and location:
lBe careful not to drop manual valve and servo release accumulator return springs.
7. Disassemble and inspect control valve assembly if necessary. Refer toAT-454, "
Control Valve Assembly
and Accumulators".
8. Remove servo release and N-D accumulators by applying com-
pressed air if necessary.
lHold each piston with a rag.
INSTALLATION
lTighten fixing bolts to specification.
lSet manual shaft in Neutral position, then align manual
plate with groove in manual valve.
lAfter installing control valve assembly to transmission
case, make sure that selector lever can be moved to all
positions.
