lA commercial engine stand can be used.
NOTE:
lThis example is an engine stand for holding at transaxle
mounting side with the flywheel or drive plate removed.
3. Drain engine oil and coolant from inside of engine.
4. Remove the following components and associated parts.
lExhaust manifold and three way catalyst assembly; Refer to
EM-22, "
Removal and Installation".
lIntake manifold collector; Refer toEM-17, "Removal and
Installation".
lIntake manifold and fuel tube assembly; Refer toEM-17,
"Removal and Installation".
lIgnition coil; Refer toEM-27, "Removal and Installation".
lRocker cover; Refer toEM-31, "Removal and Installation".
lOil pan and oil strainer; Refer toEM-24, "Removal and Installation".
lFront cover, timing chain and balancer unit; Refer toEM-43, "Removal and Installation".
lCamshaft; Refer toEM-33, "Removal and Installation".
lCylinder head; Refer toEM-53, "Removal and Installation".
5. Remove knock sensor.
CAUTION:
Carefully handle the sensor avoiding shocks.
6. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS).
CAUTION:
lAvoid impacts such as a dropping.
lDo not disassemble.
lKeep it away from metal particles.
lDo not place sensor close to magnetic materials.
7. Remove flywheel (M/T models) or drive plate (A/T models). Fix crankshaft with a stopper plate, and
remove mounting bolts.
Torx bit (size T55) : Flywheel (M/T models)
Torx socket (size E20): Drive plate (A/T models)
CAUTION:
lBe careful not to damage contact surface for the clutch
disc of the flywheel.
NOTE:
lThe flywheels, two block construction, allows movement in
response to transmission side pressure, or when twisted in its
rotational direction. Therefore, some amount of noise is nor-
mal.

OUTER DIAMETER OF CONNECTING ROD BOLT
lMeasure outer diameter (d) at position shown in the figure.
lWhen “d ” exceeds the limit (when it becomes thinner), replace
the bolt with a new one.
MOVEMENT AMOUNT OF FLYWHEEL (M/T MODELS)
NOTE:
lInspection for double mass flywheel only.
lDo not disassembly double mass flywheel.
Flywheel Deflection
lMeasure deflection of flywheel contact surface to the clutch with a dial gauge.
lMeasure deflection at 210 mm (8.27 in) dia.
lWhen measured value exceeds the limit, replace it with a new
one.
Movement Amount in Radial (rotation) Direction
lCheck the movement amount in the following procedure.
1. Install a bolt to clutch cover mounting hole, and place a torque wrench on the extended line of the flywheel
center line.
lTighten bolt at a force of 9.8 N·m (1kg-m, 87 in-lb) to keep it from loosening.
2. Put a mating mark on circumferences of the two flywheel
masses without applying any load (Measurement standard
points).
3. Apply a force of 9.8 N·m (1kg-m, 87 in-lb) in each direction, and
mark the movement amount on the mass on the transmission
side.
4. Measure dimensions of movement amounts A and B on circum-
ference of the flywheel on the transmission side.
lWhen measured value is outside the standard, replace flywheel.Limit : 7.75 mm (0.3051in) or less.

WAR NIN G:
lSituate vehicle on a flat and solid surface.
lPlace chocks at front and back of rear wheels.
lFor engines not equipped with engine slingers, attach proper slingers and bolts described in
PA R T S C ATA L O G.
CAUTION:
lAlways be careful to work safely, avoid forceful or uninstructed operations.
lDo not start working until exhaust system and coolant are cool enough.
lIf items or work required are not covered by the engine main body section, refer to the applicable
sections.
lAlways use the support point specified for lifting.
lUse either 2-pole lift type or separate type lift as best you can. If board-on type is used for
unavoidable reasons, support at the rear axle jacking point with transmission jack or similar tool
before starting work, in preparation for the backward shift of center of gravity.
lFor supporting points for lifting and jacking point at rear axle, refer toGI-37, "Garage Jack and
Safety Stand".
