4. OUTLINE OF AVC±LAN
(a) What is AVC±LAN?
AVC±LAN is the abbreviation for Audio Visual Communication±Local Area Network. This is a unified
standard co±developed by 6 audio manufacturers associated with Toyota Motor Corporation.
The unified standard includes signals, such as audio, visual and signals for switch indication and com-
munication.
(b) Objectives
Recently development in car audio systems has been rapid and functions have been changed drasti-
cally. The conventional system has been switched to a multi±media type such as a navigation system.
At the same time customers wants to upgrade their audio systems. This is the factor that lies behind
this standardization.
The concrete objectives are explained below.
(1) When products by different manufacturers were combined together, malfunctions such as sound
failure occurred. This problem can be solved by standardization of signals.
(2) Various types of after market products are available.
(3) In general, a new product developed by a particular manufacturer could not be used due to a
lack of compatibility with other manufacturer's products. By developing this new standard, users
can enjoy a range of compatible products from different manufacturers.
HINT:
When +B short or GND short is detected in the AVC±LAN circuit, communication stops, and the audio
system will not function.
When the audio system is not equipped with a navigation system, the audio head unit is the master
unit. When the audio system is equipped with a navigation system, the multi±display is the master unit.
The radio receiver assy is equipped with a resistor (60 to 80 W) for communication.
All car audio systems using an AVC±LAN circuit have a diagnostic function.
Each unit has its own specified number called a physical address (three±digit number). Numbers are
also allotted to each function, which are called logical addresses (two±digit number).
5. COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
(a) Components in the audio system communicate with each other through the AVC±LAN. (Radio receiver
with CD changer control function)
(b) When a short circuit or circuit breakdown occurs in the AVC±LAN circuit, the audio system does not
operate normally due to the communication cutoff.

6. DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION
(a) The audio system has diagnostic function (The diagnostic result is displayed on the LCD of the radio
receiver assy). (Radio receiver with CD changer control function)
(b) The component code (physical address), or three±digit number (in hexadecimal) is set for each com-
ponent comprising AVC±LAN.
(c) The logical address, or two±digit number (in hexadecimal) is set for each function and component unit
in each component.

This section describes some of the basic
features on Toyota audio systems. Some
information may not pertain to your sys-
tem.
Your audio system works when the ignition
key is in the ªACCº or ªONº position.
TURNING THE SYSTEM ON AND OFF
Push ªPWR´VOLº to turn the audio system
on and off.
Push ªAMº, ªFMº, ªTAPEº, ªDISCº or
ªLOADº to turn on that function without
pushing ªPWR´VOLº. To turn on the cas-
sette or compact disc player, a cassette
or compact disc must be loaded in the
player.
You can turn on each player by inserting
a cassette tape or compact disc.
You can turn off each player by ejecting
the cassette tape or compact disc. If the
audio system was previously off, then the
entire audio system will be turned off
when you eject the cassette tape or com-
pact disc. If the another function was pre-
viously playing, it will come on again.
SWITCHING BETWEEN FUNCTIONS
Push ªAMº, ªFMº, ªTAPEº, ªDISCº or
ªLOADº if the system is already on but
you want to switch from one function to
another.

YOUR COMPACT DISC PLAYER WITH
CHANGER (type 2)
When you insert a disc, push the ªLOADº
button and gently push the disc in with
the label side up. (The player will auto-
matically eject a disc if the label side is
down.) This compact disc player can store
up to six discs. The player will play from
track 1 through the end of the disc. Then
it will play from track 1 of the next disc.
The player is intended for use with 12 cm
(4.7 in.) discs only.
NOTICE
Do not stack up two discs for in-
sertion, or it will cause damage to
the compact disc changer. Insert
only one compact disc into slot at
a ti me.
Never try to disassemble or oil any
part of the compact disc player. Do
not insert anything except a com-
pact disc into the slot.

Vehicles with rear seat entertainment sys-
temÐ
While the DVD player is in operation, the
chapter or track can be changed by push-
ing the ªº or ªº side of the switch.
3. ªMODEº switch
Push the ªMODEº switch to select an au-
dio mode. Each push changes the mode
sequentially if the desired mode is ready
to use. The DVD player will be selectable
if a rear seat entertainment system is
installed in your vehicle.
To turn the audio system on, push the
ªMODEº switch.
To turn the audio system off, push and
hold the ªMODEº switch until the system
turns off.The rear seat audio system is designed
for the rear seat passengers to enjoy the
audio sound separately between the front
seats and the rear seats.
The rear seat audio system can be turned
on with the rear audio system controller
even if the front audio system is off.
When the front audio is turned off, the
rear audio system will be turned off simul-
taneously.
The rear passengers can enjoy all the
modes (AM and FM radio, cassette tape
player and compact disc player with
changer) with the rear seat audio system
when a cassette tape and a compact disc
are loaded in the front audio system.
When the same mode is selected on the
front and rear audio systems at the same
time, the system can be operated on the
front audio system.
If the radio mode is selected on the front
and rear audio systems at the same time,
AM and FM modes cannot be changed on
the rear seat audio system. You can enjoy the rear seat entertainment
system with commercial headphone. See
ªÐHeadphone input jacksº on page 234 in
this Section for details.
You can also enjoy the rear seat enter-
tainment system with a wireless head-
phone. The wireless headphone can be
used within rear seat. If the signal be-
comes weak, the headphone will mute.
For details, refer to the manufacturer 's
instructions.
With some wireless headphone generally
available in the market, it may be difficult
to catch sound properly. Toyota recom-
mends the use of Toyota genuine wireless
headphone.
You can purchase a wireless headphone
at a Toyota dealer.
CAUTION
Do not drive with using the head-
phone. Otherwise, you may be hard
to hear the sound from the outside
while using the headphone and may
cause an accident.

at a Toyota dealer.CAUTION
Do not drive with using the head-
phone. Otherwise, you may be hard
to hear the sound from the outside
while using the headphone and may
cause an accident.
Conversational speech on some
DVDs is recorded at a low volume
to emphasize the impact of sound
effects. If you adjust the volume
assuming that the conversations
represent the maximum volume lev-
el that the DVD will play, you may
be startled by louder sound effects
or when you change to a different
audio source. Be sure to adjust the
volume with this in mind.
Make sure the volume is not in-
creased, before you turn on the
headphone.
