NOTE: When bleeding disc brakes, air may tend to cling to caliper
walls. Lightly tap caliper while bleeding to aid in removal
of air.
Manual Bleeding
1) Fill master cylinder. Install bleeder hose on first
bleeder valve to be serviced. See BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. Submerge
other end of hose in clean glass jar partially filled with clean brake
fluid.
NOTE: When bleeding brake system manually, ensure bleeder valve is
closed when brake pedal is released.
2) Open bleeder valve 3/4-1 turn. Depress brake pedal slowly
through full travel. Close bleeder valve. Release pedal. Repeat
procedure until fluid flow is free of air bubbles.
ADJUSTMENTS
PARKING BRAKE
1) Release parking brake, and loosen cable adjusting nut to
allow slack in cable. Adjust rear brakes. Tighten cable adjusting nut
until a slight drag is felt while rotating rear wheels.
2) Loosen cable adjusting nut until both rear wheels can be
rotated freely. Back off adjusting nut an additional 2 turns. Apply
and release parking brake several times, checking for free rotation at
rear wheels.
REAR BRAKE SHOES
1) Raise and support vehicle. Ensure parking brake lever is
fully released. Back off parking brake cable adjustment to ensure
cable has slack. Remove adjusting hole cover.
2) Using a brake adjuster, expand brake shoes until slight
drag is felt when wheel assembly is rotated. Using thin screwdriver,
hold automatic adjusting lever away from adjustment star wheel.
3) Back off adjustment star wheel until wheel assembly
rotates freely and brake shoe drag is eliminated. Repeat adjustment
for remaining wheels. Adjustment must be equal at all wheels. Replace
adjusting hole covers. Adjust parking brake. See PARKING BRAKE.
STOPLIGHT SWITCH
Stoplight switch is attached to brake pedal support. Push
stoplight switch through clip in mounting bracket until switch seats
in bracket. Pull brake pedal backward as far as pedal will travel.
Brake pedal will ratchet stoplight switch to correct position. Verify
full brake pedal return, and that stoplights glow when brake pedal is
applied.
TESTING
POWER BRAKE BOOSTER FUNCTIONAL TEST

pads at this time. On models with removable hub, install hub on rotor.
Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts so they are snug,
but DO NOT tighten to final torque specifications.
3) While rotating wheel, tighten adjuster nut sufficiently to
seat bearing. Loosen nut and retighten while still rotating wheel.
Back off adjuster nut to completely release bearing preload torque.
Ensure endplay of .001-.003" (.025-.076 mm). Install lock nut and NEW
cotter pin. If necessary, tighten lock nut slightly to align cotter
pin hole. Install grease cap. Tighten caliper bolts and lug nuts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. To complete
installation, reverse remove procedure.
Removal (Ram Pickup With 8 Studs)
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove hub
extension, if equipped. Remove brake caliper. Support caliper aside.
2) On models with removable adapter hub, remove hub from
rotor. On models with one-piece hub and rotor assembly, remove cotter
pin from rotor hub nut. Remove nut. Disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor
wire (if equipped), and remove from frame and steering knuckle. Remove\
bolts securing hub to steering knuckle from inboard side of steering
knuckle. Remove rotor and hub assembly.
Installation
1) Apply anti-seize compound to drive shaft splines. Replace
grease seal in steering knuckle, if necessary. Insert 2 rearmost top
and bottom rotor hub bolts in steering knuckle so they extend through
back of knuckle. Install hub spacer, ensuring flat on space is
positioned to rear. Use chassis grease to hold spacer in position, if
necessary.
NOTE: If equipped with wheel speed sensor, brake shield must be
positioned on hub bearing, and sensor wire must be at top of
knuckle.
2) Align rotor hub with drive shaft and install hub assembly.
Align bolt holes in hub flange with bolts previously installed. Start
nuts on flange bolts sufficiently to hold assembly in place. Install
remaining bolts, and tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) Install washer and hub nut. Tighten nut securely. Install
NEW cotter pin. Install grease cap. Install caliper. Tighten caliper
bolts and lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
To complete installation, reverse remove procedure.
REAR BRAKE SHOES
WARNING: Use water or brake cleaner to clean brake parts. DO NOT use
compressed air to remove dirt and dust.
Removal (Dakota & Ram Van)
1) Remove wheel and drum. Note how secondary spring overlaps
primary return spring. Using spring remover, remove brake shoe return
springs. Slide automatic adjuster cable off anchor. Disconnect cable
from adjusting lever.
2) Remove cable, cable guide and anchor plate. See Figs. 3,
4, and 5. Disconnect adjusting lever return spring from lever. Remove
lever and return spring from pivot pin. Remove shoe-to-shoe spring.
Spread shoes, and remove adjustment star wheel.
3) Remove shoe retainers, springs and pins. Remove parking
brake lever from secondary shoe. Remove shoes and parking brake strut
with spring.

pinion flange from pinion. Remove oil seal from axle housing.
11) Remove slinger (if equipped), pinion bearing and preload\
shim(s). See Fig. 1. Note thickness of preload shims for reassembly
reference in case shims become misplaced.
12) Remove pinion and bearing from axle housing. Using
appropriate remover, remove front (outer) pinion bearing race from
axle housing. Remove rear (inner) pinion bearing race from axle
housing using remover. Remove pinion bearing depth shims from axle
housing. See Fig. 1. Measure and record shim thickness for reassembly
reference.
13) Remove rear (inner) bearing from pinion, using
appropriate puller. Remove differential bearings from differential
case. Remove preload shims from differential case. See Fig. 1.
Identify preload shim location. Record preload shim thickness for
reassembly reference.
14) Clamp differential case in soft-jaw vise. Remove roll pin
from differential case. Tap pinion shaft from differential case.
Remove pinion gears, pinion gear thrust washers, side gears and side
gear thrust washers from differential case.
Cleaning & Inspection
1) Clean components with solvent and dry with compressed air.
Inspect components for wear. Inspect bearings and bearing races for
wear and pitting. Replace bearings and bearing races as a set. Inspect
ring gear and pinion teeth for wear and chipping. Replace ring gear
and pinion gear as matched set.
2) Check differential case for cracks or scoring of side
gears, thrust washers and pinion thrust faces. Check fit of side gears
to differential case and axle shaft splines. Examine shaft of pinion
shaft for scoring or excessive wear.
3) On axles with Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brakes, if
exciter ring is not removed from differential case, ensure exciter
ring fits tightly on differential case and is fully seated.
NOTE: Lubricate all bearings, bearing races, gears and thrust
washers with gear lube during reassembly.
Reassembly & Adjustments
1) Place differential case in soft-jaw vise. Install side
gears, side gear thrust washers, pinion gears and pinion gear thrust
washers into differential case.
2) Rotate side gears until holes in pinion gears and thrust
washers align with holes in differential case. Install pinion shaft.
Install roll pin in differential case. Stake edge of differential case
in 2 areas, 180 degrees apart, to retain roll pin in place. Remove
differential case from vise.
3) On rear axles with Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) brakes,
align tab on exciter ring with slot on differential case if installing
exciter ring. Install ring gear on differential case. Install 2 NEW
ring gear bolts to maintain bolt hole alignment. Using press, press
exciter ring onto differential case using ring gear as a pilot.
4) Install ring gear on differential case (if not previously
installed). Install NEW ring gear bolts. Tighten bolts evenly in
alternating pattern to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Proceed to INITIAL DIFFERENTIAL BEARING PRELOAD.
NOTE: Initial differential bearing preload must be performed to
determine thickness of preload shims in order to obtain zero
end play of differential case. Procedure must be performed
before installing pinion in axle housing.
Initial Differential Bearing Preload
1) Install master bearings on each side of differential case

pinion face. Etched marking, in thousandths of an inch, indicates
deviation from standard dimension.
5) When etched marking is negative (-), add this amount to
pinion depth shim pack to obtain correct shim thickness. When etched
marking is positive (+), subtract this amount from pinion depth shim
pack to obtain correct shim thickness. If etched marking is zero, no
change is required in pinion depth shim pack thickness.
6) Measure pinion depth shims separately using micrometer. If
slinger is used, slinger thickness must also be included in pinion
depth shim pack. Remove pinion depth gauge set components from axle
housing.
7) Place pinion depth shim pack in axle housing bore for rear
(inner) bearing race. Using appropriate bearing race installer, drive
rear (inner) bearing race into axle housing. Ensure bearing race is
fully seated.
8) Using bearing race installer, drive front (outer) bearing\
race into axle housing. Ensure bearing race is fully seated. Proceed
to PINION BEARING PRELOAD.
Pinion Bearing Preload
1) Install slinger on pinion (if equipped). Press rear
(inner) pinion bearing onto pinion until bearing is fully seated.
Install preload shims on pinion. Install pinion in axle housing.
Install front (outer) pinion bearing and slinger (if equipped).
Install pinion flange on pinion.
2) Using holder and Pinion Flange Installer (C-3718) for 246\
and 267 models, Installer (D-191) for 286 models, press pinion flange
onto pinion. Install washer and used pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, check torque required to
rotate pinion. This is pinion bearing preload. Ensure pinion bearing
preload is within specification. See AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS
table.
4) If pinion bearing preload is not within specification,
adjust thickness of preload shims. Decrease shim thickness to increase
pinion bearing preload. Increase shim thickness to decrease pinion
bearing preload.
5) Remove nut and washer from pinion. Using holder and Pinion
Flange Remover (C-452), remove pinion flange from pinion. Ensure oil
seal surface in axle housing is clean.

ring gear backlash will be checked with same teeth meshed. Rotate ring
gear to point of minimum ring gear backlash.
6) Loosen right adjuster (viewed from rear of axle housing)
and tighten left adjuster until ring gear backlash is .003-.004" (.08-
.10 mm) with each adjuster tightened to 120 INCH lbs. (14 N.m).
7) Rotate pinion back and forth 5-10 times to ensure proper
seating of differential bearings. Ensure ring gear backlash is still
as specified. Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.
8) Using adjuster rotator, tighten right adjuster to 75 ft.
lbs. (102 N.m). Rotate pinion back and forth 5-10 times to ensure
proper seating of differential bearings. Continue to tighten right
adjuster until torque remains constant at 75 ft. lbs. (102 N.m).
9) Recheck ring gear backlash at point of minimum ring gear
backlash. If ring gear backlash is not .005-.008" (.13-.20 mm),
increase torque on right adjuster, and seat differential bearings by
rotating pinion. Continue to tighten right adjuster until ring gear
backlash is correct.
10) Tighten left adjuster to 75 ft. lbs. (102 N.m). Rotate
pinion back and forth 5-10 times to ensure proper seating of
differential bearings. Continue to tighten left adjuster until torque
remains constant at 75 ft. lbs. (102 N.m).
11) Check ring gear backlash every 90 degrees to check ring
gear backlash variation. Ring gear backlash variation should not
exceed .003" (.08 mm). For example, if ring gear backlash is .005" (.\
15 mm) at minimum point, ring gear backlash should not exceed .008" (.\
20 mm) anywhere on ring gear.
12) With adjustments completed, install adjuster locks.
Ensure teeth on adjuster lock engages with hole in adjuster. Install
and tighten adjuster lock bolt to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.
FINAL INSPECTION & ASSEMBLY
1) With pinion bearing preload and ring gear backlash
properly adjusted, check gear tooth pattern contact. See GEAR TOOTH
CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
2) To check side gear clearance, install axle shafts into
axle housing and side gears. Install clip on end of axle shaft. Pull
axle shaft outward, ensuring clip fully seats in counterbore on side
gear.
NOTE: If replacing side gears or side gear thrust washers, check
side gear clearance with axle shaft installed in axle
housing. Check side gear clearance on both side gears.
3) Install equal thickness feeler gauges on each side of side
gear, next to hub of side gear. See Fig. 4. This is side gear
clearance.

4) If no side gear clearance exists, proceed to step 8). If

distorting yoke, DO NOT overtighten vise jaws.
Disassembly
1) Clamp front drive shaft in a soft-jaw vise. If required,
disassemble "U" joint from yoke to access yoke-to-drive shaft
retaining bolt. Scribe mark yoke or slip joint to drive shaft for
reassembly reference. Slide yoke or slip joint off shaft splines.
2) Remove and retain center bearing support bracket and
retainer. (Service replacement assembly may not come with these items.
) Remove rubber insulator from bearing housing. See Fig. 10.
3) Bend slinger away from center bearing to provide clearance
for bearing puller. Using bearing puller, remove center bearing from
drive shaft. On some applications, outer bearing cover/cage and balls
must be removed to attach puller to bearing race.
Reassembly & Installation
Install NEW slinger to shaft. Install/press bearing onto
shaft using appropriate tool or tube until bearing is seated to shaft
shoulder. To complete installation, reverse disassembly and removal
procedures. Ensure support bracket angle adjustment shims are
reinstalled (if removed).
OVERHAUL
NOTE: Manufacturer recommends replacing "U" joint(s) whenever "U"
joint is disassembled from yoke. ALWAYS replace complete "U"
joint whenever extreme external lubrication leakage or
bearing cap damage exists.
Before disassembly, mark flange/yoke to drive shaft for
reassembly reference, and remove "U" joint lube fitting(s). If joints
are rusted or corroded, apply penetrating oil before pressing bearing
caps out of yoke or off "U" joint trunnion pin.
SINGLE CARDAN "U" JOINTS
Other than adding grease, "U" joint assembly items are not
individually serviceable or repairable. If needle bearings, seals,
spider, or bearing caps are found to be defective, damaged or
excessively worn, complete "U" joint must be replaced.
NOTE: Saturate bearing caps and yokes with penetrating oil before
removal.
Removal
Raise and support vehicle. Remove drive shaft. Remove inner
or outer type bearing cap retainer clips. See Fig. 11. Press bearing
caps from yokes. Remove bearings, seals and spider from yoke bore, and
discard.
Cleaning
Clean yoke bores using solvent and wire brush or crocus
cloth. Remove rust, corrosion and foreign matter from yoke bores.
Installation
1) Apply multipurpose lubricant (NLGI grade 2 EP) to yoke
bores and into needle bearings of each bearing cap. Position spider in
yoke bores.
2) Install seals onto spider trunnions or bearing caps.
Lightly tap bearing caps into yoke bore far enough to retain spider in
place.

Install head bolts. Head bolts should be tightened in proper
steps and sequence to specification. See Fig. 1. Install remaining
components. Tighten all bolts to specification. Adjust valves if
required. See VALVE ADJUSTMENT in this article.
NOTE: Some manufacturers require that head bolts be retightened
after specified amount of operation. This must be done to
prevent head gasket failure.
VALVE ADJUSTMENT
Engine specifications will indicate valve train clearance and
temperature at which adjustment is to be made on most models. In most
cases, adjustment will be made with a cold engine. In some cases, both
a cold and a hot clearance will be given for maintenance convenience.
On some models, adjustment is not required. Rocker arms are
tightened to specification and valve lash is automatically set. On
some models with push rod actuated valve train, adjustment is made at
push rod end of rocker arm while other models do not require
adjustment.
Clearance will be checked between tip of rocker arm and tip
of valve stem in proper sequence using a feeler gauge. Adjustment is
made by rotating adjusting screw until proper clearance is obtained.
Lock nut is then tightened. Engine will be rotated to obtain all valve
adjustments to manufacturer's specifications.
Some models require hydraulic lifter to be bled down and
clearance measured. Different length push rods can be used to obtain
proper clearance. Clearance will be checked between tip of rocker arm
and tip of valve stem in proper sequence using a feeler gauge.
On overhead cam engines designed without rocker arms actuate
valves directly on a cam follower. A hardened, removable disc is
installed between the cam lobe and lifter. Clearance will be checked
between cam heel and adjusting disc in proper sequence using a feeler
gauge. Engine will be rotated to obtain all valve adjustments.
On overhead cam engines designed with rocker arms, adjustment
is made at push rod end of rocker arm. Ensure that the valve to be
adjusted is riding on the heel of the cam on all engines. Clearance
will be checked between tip of rocker arm and tip of valve stem in
proper sequence using a feeler gauge. Adjustment is made by rotating
adjusting screw until proper clearance is obtained. Lock nut is then
tightened. Engine will be rotated to obtain all valve adjustments to
manufacturer's specifications.
CYLINDER HEAD OVERHAUL

NOTE: Always refer to appropriate engine overhaul article in the
ENGINES section for complete overhaul procedures and
specifications for the vehicle being repaired.
DISASSEMBLY
Mark valves for location. Using valve spring compressor,
compress valve springs. Remove valve locks. Carefully release spring
compressor. Remove retainer or rotator, valve spring, spring seat and
valve. See Fig. 2.

ROCKER ARMS & ASSEMBLIES
Rocker Studs
Rocker studs are either threaded or pressed in place.
Threaded studs are removed by locking 2 nuts on the stud. Unscrew the
stud by turning the jam nut. Coat the stud threads with Loctite and
install. Tighten to specification.
Pressed in stud can be removed using a stud puller. Ream the
stud bore to proper specification and press in a new oversize stud.
Pressed in studs are often replaced by cutting threads in the stud
bore to accept a threaded stud.
Rocker Arms & Shafts
Mark rocker arms for location. Remove rocker arm retaining
bolts. Remove rocker arms. Inspect rocker arms, shafts, bushings and
pivot balls (if equipped) for excessive wear. Inspect rocker arms
for wear in valve stem contact area. Measure rocker arm bushing I.D.
Replace bushings if excessively worn.
The rocker arm valve stem contact point can be reground,
using special fixture for valve grinding machine. Remove minimum
amount of material as possible. Ensure all oil passages are clear.
Install rocker arms in original locations. Ensure rocker arm is
properly seated in push rod. Tighten bolts to specification. Adjust
valves if required. See VALVE ADJUSTMENT in this article.
Pushrods
Remove rocker arms. Mark push rods for location. Remove push
rods. Push rods can be steel or aluminum, solid or hollow. Hollow
pushrods must be internally cleaned to ensure oil passage to the
rocker arms is cleaned. Check the pushrod for damage, such as loose
ends on steel tipped aluminum types.
Check push rod for straightness. Roll push rod on a flat
surface. Using feeler gauge, check clearance at center. Replace push
rod if bent. The push rod can also be supported at each end and
rotated. A dial indicator is used to detect bends in the push rod.
Lubricate ends of push rod and install push rod in original
location. Ensure push rod is properly seated in lifter. Install rocker
arm. Tighten bolts to specification. Adjust valves if required. See
VALVE ADJUSTMENT in this article.
LIFTERS
Hydraulic Lifters
Before replacing a hydraulic lifter for noisy operation,
ensure noise is not caused by worn rocker arms or valve tips.
Hydraulic lifter assemblies must be installed in original locations.
Remove the rocker arm assembly and push rod. Mark components for
location. Some applications require intake manifold, or lifter cover
removal. Remove lifter retainer plate (if used). To remove lifters,
use a hydraulic lifter remover or magnet. Different type lifters are
used. See Fig. 13.
