CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM)
NOTE: Before removing Central Timer Module (CTM) use scan tool to
view settings for programmable features. Use these settings
to program replacement CTM.
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left underdash
cover and knee bolster reinforcement. Remove 2 CTM retaining screws at
right side of underdash opening. See Fig. 5.
2) Slide CTM down into opening far enough to gain access to
connectors. Disconnect harness connectors and remove CTM from
underdash. To install, reverse removal procedure. Reprogram new CTM.

Removal & Installation (Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover.
been submerged in water. Water can enter through the axle
vent hole and contaminate the lubricant.
BATTERY WARNING
WARNING: When battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with
computers may lose memory data. When battery power is
restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles.
These vehicles may require a relearn procedure.
WARNING: Batteries produce flammable hydrogen gas. Keep flames and
sparks away from the battery or and explosion may occur.
Never smoke when working in the vicinity of the battery.
WARNING: When checking or servicing the battery, disconnect the
negative cable. Be careful not to cause a short circuit by
allowing metal objects to contact the battery posts and the
vehicle at the same time.
REPLACING BLOWN FUSES
CAUTION: Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off
all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical
system. Be sure to use fuse with the correct indicated
amperage rating. The use of an incorrect amperage rating fuse
may result in a dangerous electrical system overload.
BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR
Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning
that brake pads need replacement.
BRAKE HOSES
WARNING: Worn brake hoses can burst and cause brake failure. If
any sign of cracking, scuffing, or worn spots are found,
replace the brake hoses immediately.
BRAKE FLUID
WARNING: The use of incorrect fluid in the brake system may cause
damage to components. DO NOT use any fluid other than DOT-3
brake fluid. DO NOT use reclaimed fluid or fluid that has
been stored in old or open containers. It is essential that
foreign particles and other liquids are kept out of the
brake fluid reservoir.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
CAUTION: Continued operation of vehicle with a severe malfunction
could cause converter to overheat, resulting in possible
damage to converter and vehicle.
COOLANT
CAUTION: To avoid possible damage to vehicle use only ethylene-glycol
based coolants with a mixture ratio from 50-70% anti-freeze.
DO NOT use 100% anti-freeze as it will cause the formation
of cooling system deposits.

block. Install distributor so distributor shaft engages with slot in
oil pump drive gear. It may be necessary to slightly rotate
distributor during installation.
6) When distributor is fully seated, the distributor rotor
should be at 3 o'clock position and center of hold-down bolt area on
distributor housing should align with distributor hold-down bolt area
on cylinder block.
7) Install hold-down clamp and distributor hold-down bolt.
Tighten distributor hold-down bolt to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS.
8) If installing a factory replacement distributor, remove
plastic alignment pin from distributor housing. If installing original
or used distributor, remove drift from distributor housing and
reinstall camshaft position sensor. On all applications, install
distributor cap and remaining components. Base ignition timing is
nonadjustable, as ignition timing and timing advance are controlled by
the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Removal (Dakota 3.9L, 5.2L & 5.9L, Durango, Ram Pickup 3.9L,
5.2L & 5.9L, Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. On Ram Van and Ram
Wagon, remove engine cover. On all models, remove air cleaner
assembly. Remove distributor cap. Disconnect electrical connector for
distributor.
2) Rotate crankshaft clockwise (viewed from front of engine)\
until cylinder No. 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on compression stroke\
and timing mark on vibration damper aligns with TDC timing mark on
timing chain cover. Cylinder No. 1 is the front cylinder on driver's
side of engine.
3) Ensure distributor rotor aligns with cylinder No. 1
alignment mark on camshaft position sensor. See Fig. 23. If
distributor rotor is not properly aligned, rotate crankshaft clockwise
one full revolution. Ensure distributor rotor aligns with terminal for
cylinder No. 1 on distributor cap.
4) Scribe a mark on distributor and adjacent component to
indicate rotor and distributor housing position for installation
reference. Remove distributor hold-down bolt and hold-down clamp.
Remove distributor with "O" ring from cylinder block.

WARNING: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist
until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See
COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION
before disconnecting battery.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NOTE: For manual transmission replacement procedures, see
appropriate article in CLUTCHES.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
DAKOTA & DURANGO
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Disconnect and remove necessary skid plates and exhaust
components for transmission removal. Remove engine-to-transmission
struts (if equipped). These struts are located between front of
transmission and engine.
2) Ensure area around transmission oil cooler lines fitting
are clean. Disengage retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting.
Pull cooler line from transmission oil cooler.
CAUTION: Crankshaft position sensor must be removed from transmission
housing before removing transmission to prevent damage to
crankshaft position sensor.
3) Remove starter. Disconnect electrical connector for
crankshaft position sensor. On 2.5L, crankshaft position sensor is
mounted on driver's side of transmission housing. See Fig. 1. On 3.9L,
5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is mounted on passenger's
side of transmission housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts or nuts. Remove
crankshaft position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick,
dipstick tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft flanges for
installation reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. On 4WD
models, disconnect drive shaft from transfer case. Disconnect shift
rod for transfer case from transfer case shift lever.
7) On all models, disconnect necessary control cables, wiring
harnesses, and shift linkage or cable from transmission. Support rear
of engine with jack stand. Using transmission jack, slightly raise
transmission to release pressure from rear mount and rear crossmember.
8) Remove bolts securing rear support and rear mount to
transmission and rear crossmember. Raise transmission slightly. Slide
exhaust hanger arm from bracket on rear support. Remove rear support
and rear mount.
9) Remove rear crossmember located below the transmission. On
4WD models, disconnect electrical connectors from transfer case. On
