1. Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection
sheets.
2. Set the engine compartment cover to the service access
position.
3. Disconnect the batt ery ground cable.
Remove the battery cover.
4. Remove the Timing Co ver. Refer to Operation 12.65.01 in this
Section.
5. Remove the Variable Valve Ti ming Bush Carrier Assembly.
Refer to Operation 12.65.52 in this Section
6. Raise the vehicle on a ramp.
7. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.

6. Raise the vehicle on a ramp.
7. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.

Removal
Installation
1. Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection
sheets.
2. Set the engine compartment cover to the service access
position.
3. Disconnect the batt ery ground cable.
Remove the battery cover.
4. Remove the Timing Co ver. Refer to Operation 12.65.01 in this
Section.
5. Remove the VVT bush carrier.
1. Remove the two bolts and one nut which secure the carrier to the cylinder block.
2. Release the carrier from the two ring dowels and
remove it.
6. Remove the seals from the bush carrier.
1. Remove the sealing ring (scarf jointed) from the
carrier bush groove.
2. Remove the O-ring from the carrier oil-way recess.
7. Clean and inspect all relevant components.
1. Fit new seals to the bush carrier.
1. Fit the new sealing ring (scarf jointed) to the carrier bush groove.
2. Fit a new O-ring to the carrier oil-way.

Removal
1. Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection sheets.
2. Set the engine compartment cover to the service access position.

1. Park the vehicle on a four post ramp, over which, an overhead
lifting crane is available, and set the gear selector to 'N'.
The crane should be rated at a minimum of 500 kg Safe
Working Load and have suffici ent fore and aft movement
to traverse the engine assemb ly clear of the vehicle.
Do not apply the handbrake, but use wedges to chock one
wheel to prevent movement of the vehicle.
2. Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection
sheets.
3. Disconnect the batt ery ground cable.
Remove the battery cover.

• WARNINGS:
4. Remove the engine compartment cover (bonnet).
1. Apply masking tape to th e front edge of the engine
compartment cover to protect the paintwork during
removal and storage.
2. With assistance, support the cover and release the
gas struts.
5. With assistance, release the six bolts which retain the cover
(bonnet) and lift the cover clear.
Disconnect the ground cable from the left hand hinge.
6. Remove the engine covers
7. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Operation 26.10.01.
Conserve as much of the coolant as possible to refill the
system.
8. Depressurise the air conditioni ng system. Refer to Operation
82.30.30 and note all Wa rnings and Cautions.

Remove the bolts which secure the downpipe to the lower
mounting bracket.
Remove the downpipe assembly.
Repeat the above operations for the other downpipe
catalytic converter.
47. Remove the two bolts which secure each mounting bracket to
the bell housing and remove the brackets.
48. Disconnect the driveshaft (propshaft) flange from the
transmission output flange.
Remove the three bolts which secure the flange. Rotate
the shaft for access to each bolt.
Disconnect the shaft and reposition it to the side.
49. Remove the securing bolt and disconnect the ground lead
from the transmission casing.
50. Disconnect the oil cooler pi pes (where fitted) from the
engine.
1. Remove the bolt which secures the pipe clamping
plate. Remove the clamping plate.
2. Place a drain tray beneat h the pipes and disconnect

10. Move the crane away from the vehicle.
11. Raise the vehicle on the ramp.

Connect the transmission selector cable.
1. Fit the selector lever to the cross shaft.
2. Fit the nut which secures the selector lever to the transmission cross shaft.
3. Reposition the selector cable abutment bracket to the transmission and fit the securing bolts.

Connect the transmission harness connector.
1. Connect the transmission harness connector.
2. Secure the leve r lock mechanism.

Reposition the ground lead to the transmission casing and fit
the securing bolt.
15. Fit the brackets which suppo rt the downpipe catalytic
converters to the bell housing.

sition the mounting bracket and fit the two bolts which
secure it to the bell housing.
