Use the wooden handle ot a hammer to drive the
pistons out.
CAUTION:
. Take care not to damage the contact surface ot
the metal gasket.
. When removing the piston/connecting rod, take
care not to hit the oil iet (818C1, 818C5 enginesl.
. ll the oil iet nozzle is damaged or bent, replace
the oil iet assembly {818C1, B18C5 engincs.
page 8-9).
Reinstall the rod bearings and caps after removing
each piston/connecting rod assembly.
l\4ark each piston/connecting rod assembly with its
cylinder number to avoid mixup on reassembly.
NOTE; The existing number on the connecting rod
does not indicate its position in the engine, it indi-
cates the rod bore size.
End Play
NOTE: End play should be inspected before removing
crankshaft.
Push the crank firmly away from the dial indicator, and
zero the dial against the end of the crank. Then pull the
crank firmly back toward the indicator; dial reading
should not exceed service limit.
Crankshaft End Play:
Standard (New): 0.10 - 0.35 mm
{0.00'l - 0.014 inl
Service Limit: 0.45 mm 10.018 inl
. lf end play is excessive, inspect the thrust washers
and thrust surface on the crankshaft. Replace parts as
necessary.
NOTE:
. Thrust washer thickness is tixed and must not be
changed either by grinding or shimming.
. Thrust washers are installed with grooved sides fac-
ing outward.

Inspection
Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn ofl the
engine. Allow the oil a few minutes to drain back
into the oil pan so the dipstick will show the actual
tevet,
Make certain that the oil level indicated on the dip-
stick is between the upper and lower marks.
lf the level has dropped close to the lower mark,
add oil until it reaches the upper mark.
CAUTION: Insert the dipstick caretully to avoid
bending it.

NOTE: Check the transmission oil with the engine OFF
and the vehicle on level ground.
1. Remove the oil filler plug, then check the level and
condition of the oil.

The oil level must be up to the filler hole. lf it is
below the hole, add oil until it runs out, then rein-
stall the oil filler plug.
lf the transmission oil is dirty, remove the drainplug and drain the oil.
Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer, and
refillthe transmission oilto the proper tevet.
NOTE: The drain plug washer should be replaced at
every oil change.

Measure the clearance between the reverse change
holder and the sth/reverse shift piece pin.
Standard:
Reverse Side: 0.05 - 0.45 mm (0.002 - 0.018 inl
5th Side: 0.4 - 0.9 mm (0.02 - 0.04 in)
Separate the transmission housing from the clutch
housing, and wipe it clean of the sealant.
Remove the 72 mm thrust shim and the oil guide
plate from the transmission housing

sure the width of the grooves in the reverse change

lf the width of the grooves are not within the
standard, replace the rsverse change hbtder with
