− DIAGNOSTICSAUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE (A540H)
1996 RAV4 (RM447U)
DTC P0753, P0758 Shift Solenoid A/B Electrical Malfunc-
tion (Shift Solenoid Valve No. 1/No. 2)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Shifting from 1st to O/D is done in combination with ON and OFF of the shift solenoid valves No. 1 and No.
2 controlled by ECM. If an open or short circuit occurs in either of the shift solenoid valves, the ECM controls
the remaining normal shift solenoid valve to allow the vehicle to be operated smoothly (Fail safe function).
Fail Safe Function:
If either of the shift solenoid valve circuits develops an open or a short, the ECM turns the other shift solenoid
ON and OFF to shift to the gear positions shown in the table below. The ECM also turns the shift solenoid
valve SL OFF at the same time. If both solenoids are malfunction, hydraulic control cannot be done electroni-
cally so it must be done manually.
Manual shifting as shown in the following table must be done. (In the case of a short circuit, the ECM stops
sending current to the short circuited solenoid).
HINT:
Check the shift solenoid valve No. 1 when DTC P0753 is output and check the shift solenoid valve No. 2
when DTC P0758 is output.
DTC No.DTC Detecting ConditionTrouble Area
P0753
P0758
The ECM checks for an open or short circuit in the shift sole-
noid valves No.1 and No.2 circuit when it changes
The ECM records DTC P0753 or P0758 if condition (a) or (b) is
detected once, but it does not light up the MIL
After ECM detects condition (a) or (b) continuously 2 times or
more in one−trip, it causes the MIL light up until condition (a) or
(b) disappears
After that, if the ECM detects condition (a) or (b) once, it starts
lighting up the MIL
(d) Solenoid resistance is 8 Ω or less short circuit when sole-
noid is energized
(e) Solenoid resistance is 100 kΩ or more open circuit when
solenoid is not energized

2. SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CHECK
(a) Check the speed sensor signal.
(1) Turn the ignition switch OFF.
(2) Using SST, connect terminals Ts and E1 of the
DLC1.
SST 09843−18020
(3) Start the engine.
(4) Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
HINT:
If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the ABS warning
light circuit (See page DI−275).
(5) Drive vehicle straight forward.
HINT:
Drive vehicle faster than 45 km/h (28 mph) for several seconds.
(6) Stop the vehicle.
(7) Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1 of the
DLC1.
SST 09843−18020
(8) Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
HINT:
See the list of DTC shown on the next page.
If every sensor is normal, a normal code is output (A cycle
of 0.25 sec. ON and 0.25 sec. OFF is repeated).
If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time,
the lowest numbered code will be displayed 1st.
(9) After doing the check, disconnect terminals Ts and
E1, and Tc and E1 of the DLC1, and turn the ignition
switch OFF.

or 3 times repeatedly after 3 seconds.
(d) Turn the SET/COAST or RES/ACC switch OFF.
(e) Operate each switch as listed in the table below.
(f) Read the blinking pattern of the CRUISE MAIN indicator
light.

HINT:
As a large amount of exhaust gas enters, the engine will misfire
slightly.
7. REMOVE VACUUM GAUGE
Remove the vacuum gauge, and reconnect the vacuum hoses
to the proper locations.
8. INSPECT EGR VALVE
(a) Apply vacuum directly to the EGR valve with the engine
idling.
(b) Check that the engine runs rough or dies.
(c) Reconnect the vacuum hoses to the proper locations.
HINT:
As exhaust gas is increasingly recirculated, the engine will start
to misfire.
9. REMOVE SST FROM DLC1 (See page SF−1)
SST 09843−18020
10. INSPECT EGR VACUUM MODULATOR OPERATION
(a) Disconnect the vacuum hoses from ports P, Q and R of
the EGR vacuum modulator.
(b) Block ports P and R with your finger.
(c) Blow air into port Q, and check that the air passes through
to the air filter side freely.
(d) Start the engine, and maintain speed at 2,500 rpm.
(e) Repeat the above test. Check that there is a strong resis-
tance to air flow.
(f) Reconnect the vacuum hoses to the proper locations.
11. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY (See page SF−30)
12. REMOVE EGR VALVE
13. INSPECT EGR VALVE

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SYSTEM
(a) Inspect the differential lock operation.
(1) Use a lift or jack stand to lift up the vehicle so that
all 4 tires can rotate.
(2) Apply the parking brake and start the engine.
(3) Set the center differential lock switch to ON.
(4) Depress the clutch pedal and shift into the 2nd gear.
(5) With the engine idling, gradually engage the clutch
and check that the engine stops.
(6) With the parking brake and engine ON, turn the cen-
ter differential lock switch OFF.
(7) Depress the clutch pedal and shift into the 2nd gear.
(8) With the engine idling, gradually engage the clutch
and check that the front wheels rotate.
HINT:
This inspection must be done when the engine is idling.
(b) Inspect the center differential lock indicator operation.
(1) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(2) Check that when the differential lock switch is
turned ON and OFF, the differential lock indicator
lamp lights up and goes off, respectively.
(c) Inspect the center differential lock warning buzzer opera-
tion.
(1) Start the engine and check that the differential lock
warning buzzer does not sound when the center dif-
ferential lock switch is turned ON.
(2) Interchange the solenoid hose No.1 and solenoid
hose No.2 between the differential lock control sole-
noid No.1 and No.2 and the differential lock actua-
tor. And check that the differential lock warning
buzzer sounds when the differential lock switch is
turned OFF.
(3) Return the solenoid hose No.1 and solenoid hose
No.2 to their original location, and check that the dif-
ferential lock warning buzzer stops.
HINT:
Do the inspection with the vehicle stopped.
After finishing the inspection, inspect the differential lock
control solenoid hoses.

(b) When installing the battery, be especially careful not to in-
correctly connect the positive (+) and negative (−) cables.
(c) Do not permit parts to receive a severe impact during re-
moval or installation. Handle all SFI parts carefully, espe-
cially the ECM.
(d) Do not be careless during troubleshooting as there are
numerous transistor circuits and even slight terminal con-
tact can cause further troubles.
(e) Do not open the ECM cover.
(f) When inspecting during rainy weather, take care to pre-
vent entry of water. Also, when washing the engine
compartment, prevent water from getting on the SFI parts
and wiring connectors.
(g) Parts should be replaced as an assembly.
(h) Care is required when pulling out and inserting wiring con-
nectors.
(i) Release the lock and pull out the connector, pulling on the
connectors.
(j) Fully insert the connector and check that it is locked.
(k) Use SST for inspection or test of the injector or its wiring
connector.

8. FUEL SYSTEM
(a) When disconnecting the high fuel pressure line, a large
amount of gasoline will spill out, so observe the following
procedures:
(1) Disconnect the fuel pump connector.
(2) Start the engine. After the engine has stopped on
its own, turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
(3) Put a container under the connection.
(4) Slowly loosen the connection.
(5) Disconnect the connection.
(6) Plug the connection with a rubber plug.
