Left turn1 − 2Continuity
Neutral−No continuity
Right turn2 − 3Continuity
If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.
2. INSPECT HAZARD WARNING SWITCH CONTINUITY
Switch positionTester connectionSpecified condition
Switch OFF7 − 10Continuity
Switch ON4 − 5 − 6 − 9
7 − 8Continuity
Illumination circuit2 − 3Continuity
If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.
3. INSPECT TURN SIGNAL FLASHER OPERATION
(a) Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal
2 and the negative (−) lead to terminal 3.
(b) Connect the 2 turn signal light bulbs parallel to each other
to terminals 1 and 3, check that the bulbs flash.
HINT:
The turn signal lights should flash 60 or 120 times per minute.
If one of the front or rear turn signal lights has an open circuit,
the number of flashing will be more than 140 per minute.
If operation is not as specified, replace the flasher.

DTC P0171 System too Lean (Fuel Trim)
DTC P0172 System too Rich (Fuel Trim)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
”Fuel trim” refers to the feedback compensation value compared against the basic injection time. Fuel trim
includes short−term fuel trim and long−term fuel trim.
”Short−term fuel trim” is the short−term fuel compensation used to maintain the air−fuel ration at its ideal
theoretical value. The signal from the oxygen sensor indicates whether the air−fuel ratio is RICH or LEAN
compared to the ideal theoretical value, triggering a reduction in fuel volume if the air−fuel ratio is rich, and
an increase in fuel volume if it is lean.
”Long−term fuel trim” is overall fuel compensation carried out long−term to compensate for continual devi-
ation of the short−term fuel trim from the central value due to individual engine differences, wear over time
and changes in the usage environment.
If both the short−term fuel trim and long−term fuel trim are LEAN or RICH beyond a certain value, it is de-
tected as a malfunction and the MIL lights up.
DTC No.DTC Detecting ConditionTrouble Area
P0171
When the air fuel ratio feedback is stable after engine warning
up, the fuel trim is considerably in error on the RICH side
(2 trip detection logic)
Fuel line pressure
Injector blockage
Oxygen sensor malfunction
Manifold absolute pressure sensor
Engine coolant temp. sensor
P0172
When the air fuel ratio feedback is stable after engine warning
up, the fuel trim is considerably in error on the LEAN side
(2 trip detection logic)
Fuel line pressure
Injector blockage, leak
Oxygen sensor malfunction
Manifold absolute pressure sensor
Engine coolant temp. sensor.
HINT:
When DTC P0171 is recorded, the actual air−fuel ratio is on the LEAN side. When DTC P0172 is re-
corded, the actual air−fuel ratio is on the RICH side.
If the vehicle runs out of fuel, the air−fuel ratio is LEAN and DTC P0171 is detected. The MIL then
comes on.
If the total of the short−term fuel trim value and long−term fuel trim value is within ±25 %, the system
is functioning normally.

ABS Warning Light Circuit
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
If the ECU detects trouble, it lights the ABS warning light while at the same time prohibiting ABS control. At
this time, the ECU records a DTC in memory. After removing the short pin of the DLC1, connect terminals
Tc and E1 of the DLC1 to make the ABS warning light blink and output the DTC.

− MANUAL TRANSAXLEDIFFERENTIAL LOCKING SYSTEM (4WD)
MX−73
1996 RAV4 (RM447U)
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SYSTEM
(a) Inspect the differential lock operation.
(1) Use a lift or jack stand to lift up the vehicle so that
all 4 tires can rotate.
(2) Apply the parking brake and start the engine.
(3) Set the center differential lock switch to ON.
(4) Depress the clutch pedal and shift into the 2nd gear.
(5) With the engine idling, gradually engage the clutch
and check that the engine stops.
(6) With the parking brake and engine ON, turn the cen-
ter differential lock switch OFF.
(7) Depress the clutch pedal and shift into the 2nd gear.
(8) With the engine idling, gradually engage the clutch
and check that the front wheels rotate.
HINT:
This inspection must be done when the engine is idling.
(b) Inspect the center differential lock indicator operation.
(1) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(2) Check that when the differential lock switch is
turned ON and OFF, the differential lock indicator
lamp lights up and goes off, respectively.
(c) Inspect the center differential lock warning buzzer opera-
tion.
(1) Start the engine and check that the differential lock
warning buzzer does not sound when the center dif-
ferential lock switch is turned ON.
(2) Interchange the solenoid hose No.1 and solenoid
hose No.2 between the differential lock control sole-
noid No.1 and No.2 and the differential lock actua-
tor. And check that the differential lock warning
buzzer sounds when the differential lock switch is
turned OFF.
(3) Return the solenoid hose No.1 and solenoid hose
No.2 to their original location, and check that the dif-
ferential lock warning buzzer stops.
HINT:
Do the inspection with the vehicle stopped.
After finishing the inspection, inspect the differential lock
control solenoid hoses.
