(d) Replace the ATF.
NOTICE:
Do not overfill.
(1) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain
plug, gasket and drain the fluid.
(2) Install a new gasket and the drain plug securely.
(3) Add new fluid through the filler pipe.
Fluid type: ATF type T or equivalent
Drain and refill: 3.3 liters (3.5 US qts, 2.9 lmp. qts)
(4) Start the engine and shift the selector into all the
positions from P through L and then shift into the P
position.
(5) With the engine idling, check the fluid level. Add
fluid up to the COOL level on the dipstick.
(6) Check the fluid level with the normal fluid tempera-
ture 70 − 80°C (158 − 176°F) and add as neces-
sary.
NOTICE:
Do not overfill.
(e) Replace the transfer oil.
(1) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain
plug and drain the oil.
(2) Install the drain plug.
(3) Add new oil through the filler pipe.
Recommended oil:
Oil grade API GL−5
Viscosity SAE 75W−90
Capacity: 0.7 liters (0.7 US qts, 0.6 lmp. qts)
(4) Check the oil level and add as necessary.
NOTICE:
Do not overfill.

CAUTION:
Perform the test at normal operating ATF temperature 50 − 80°C (122 − 176°F).
The line pressure test should always be carried out in parts. One should observe the conditions
of wheels or wheel stopper outside the vehicle while the other is performing the test.
(b) Measure the line pressure.
(1) Fully apply the parking brake and chock the 4 wheels.
(2) Start the engine and check idling speed.
(3) Step down strongly on the brake pedal with your left foot and shift into the D position.
(4) Measure the line pressure when the engine is idling speed.
(5) Press the accelerator pedal all the way down. Quickly read the highest line pressure when engine
speed reaches stall speed.
(6) Only when the shift solenoid valve ST is opened:
Apply battery positive voltage between terminal of the solenoid connector and body ground.
(7) In the same way, perform the test in the R position.

noid valve ST valve is open.
If the measured pressures are not with in the specification, recheck the throttle cable adjustment and perform
a retest.

PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE
If a normal code is displayed during the diagnostic trouble code check but the trouble still occurs, check the
circuits for each symptom in the order given in the charts on the following pages and proceed to the page
given for troubleshooting.
The Matrix Chart is divided into 3 chapters.
Chapter 1: Electronic Circuit Matrix Chart
Chapter 2: On−Vehicle Repair Matrix Chart
Chapter 3: Off−Vehicle Repair Matrix Chart
When troubleshooting, check Chapter 1 first. If instructions are given in Chapter 1 to proceed to chapter 2
or 3, proceed as instructed.
(1) If the instruction ”Proceed to next circuit inspection shown on matrix chart” is given in the flow
chart for each circuit, proceed to the circuit with the next highest number in the table to continue
the check.
(2) If the trouble still occurs even though there are no abnormalities in any of the other circuits, then
check and replace the ECM.

COMPRESSION
INSPECTION
HINT:
If there is lack of power, excessive oil consumption or poor fuel
economy, measure the compression pressure.
1. WARM UP AND STOP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
2. DISCONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR
3. DISCONNECT HIGH−TENSION CORDS FROM SPARK
PLUGS AND IGNITION COIL
4. REMOVE SPARK PLUGS
5. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE
(a) Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole.
(b) Fully open the throttle.
(c) While cranking the engine, measure the compression
pressure.
HINT:
Always use a fully charged battery to obtain engine speed of
250 rpm or more.
(d) Repeat steps (a) through (c) for each cylinder.
NOTICE:
This measurement must be done in as short a time as pos-
sible.
Compression pressure:
1,275 kPa (13.0 kgf/cm
2, 185 psi) or more
Minimum pressure: 932 kPa (9.5 kgf/cm
2, 135 psi)
Difference between each cylinder:
98 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm
2, 14 psi) or less
(e) If the cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low,
pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through
the spark plug hole and repeat steps (a) through (c) for
cylinders with low compression.
If adding oil helps the compression, it is likely that
the piston rings and/or cylinder bore are worn or
damaged.
If pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking or
seating is improper, or there may be leakage past
the gasket.
6. REINSTALL SPARK PLUGS
7. RECONNECT HIGH−TENSION CORDS TO SPARK
PLUGS AND IGNITION COIL

INSPECTION
HINT:
Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
1. DISCONNECT PS RESERVOIR
2. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER
(a) Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
(b) Disconnect the accelerator cable from the clamp on the
intake manifold.
(c) Disconnect the accelerator cable from the clamp on the
generator bracket.
(d) Disconnect the A/T throttle control cable from the throttle
body.
(e) Disconnect the PCV hose from the air cleaner hose.
(f) Disconnect the PCV hose from the intake manifold.
(g) Disconnect the high−tension cords from the spark plugs.
(h) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the accelerator cable
bracket from the intake manifold.
(i) Disconnect the engine wire protector from the 2 mounting
bolts of the No. 2 timing belt cover in the sequence shown.
(j) Remove the 4 nuts, grommets, cylinder head cover and
gasket.
HINT:
Arrange the grommets in the correct order, so that they can be
reinstalled into their original positions. This minimizes any pos-
sibility of oil leakage due to reuse of the grommets in different
positions.
