TEMPERATURE (ECT) SWITCH
INSPECTION
1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
2. REMOVE ECT SWITCH
3. INSPECT ECT SWITCH
(a) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity be-
tween the terminals when the coolant temperature is
above 93°C (199°F).
(b) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity be-
tween the terminals when the coolant temperature is be-
low 83°C (181°F).
If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.
4. REINSTALL ECT SWITCH
5. REFILL WITH ENGINE COOLANT
6. START ENGINE AND CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
HINT:
Parameters listed in the chart may not be exactly the same as your reading due to the type of instrument
or other factors.
If a malfunction code is displayed during the DTC check in check mode, check the circuit for that code listed
in the table below, for details of each code, turn to the page referred to under the ”See page” for the respec-
tive ”DTC No.” in the DTC chart.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
If DTC ”P0115” (Engine Coolant Temp. Circuit Malfunction) and ”P0116” (Engine Coolant Temp. Circuit
Range / Performance Problem) are output simultaneously, engine coolant temp. sensor circuit may be open.
Perform troubleshooting of DTC P0115 first.
1 Are there any other codes (besides DTC P0116) being output?
YES Go to relevant DTC chart.
NO
2 Check thermostat (See page CO−11).
NG Replace thermostat.
OK
Replace engine coolant temp. sensor
(See page SF−49).

INSPECTION
1. INITIAL CONDITIONS
(a) Engine at normal operating temperature
(b) Air cleaner installed
(c) All pipes and hoses of air induction system connected
(d) All vacuum lines properly connected
(e) SFI system wiring connectors fully plugged
(f) All operating accessories switched OFF
(g) Ignition timing check correctly
(h) Transmission in neutral position
(i) Air conditioning switched OFF
2. CONNECT TOYOTA HAND−HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL (See page EM−11)
3. INSPECT IDLE SPEED
(a) Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
(b) Check the idle speed.
Idle speed (w/ Cooling fan OFF): 750 ± 50 rpm
If the idle speed is not as specified, check the IAC valve and air intake system.
4. DISCONNECT TOYOTA HAND−HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL
