DTC P1780 Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The park / neutral position switch goes on when the shift lever is in the N or P shift position. When it goes
on terminal NSW of the ECM is grounded to body ground via the starter relay thus the terminal NSW voltage
becomes 0 V. When the shift lever is in the D, 2, L or R position, the park / neutral position switch goes off,
so the voltage of ECM terminal NSW becomes battery positive voltage, the voltage of the ECM internal pow-
er source.
If the shift lever is moved from the N position to the D position, this signal is used for air−fuel ratio correction
and for idle speed control (estimated control), etc.

A/C Cut Control Circuit
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
This circuit cuts air conditioning operation during vehicle acceleration in order to increase acceleration per-
formance. During acceleration with the vehicle speed at 25 km/h (16 mph) or less, engine speed at 1,200
rpm or less and throttle valve opening angle at 60° or more, the A/C magnet switch is turned OFF for several
seconds.

DI−129
1996 RAV4 (RM447U)
(5) See page DI−138 to confirm the details of the
DTCs.
NOTICE:
When simulating symptoms with an OBD II scan tool (ex-
cluding TOYOTA hand−held tester) to check the DTCs, use
the normal mode. For codes on the DTC chart subject to ”2
trip detection logic”, turn the ignition switch off after the
symptoms have been simulated for the first time. Then re-
peat the simulation process again. When the program has
been simulated twice, the MIL lights up and the DTCs are
recorded in the ECM.
3. Check Mode:
INSPECT DIAGNOSIS
HINT:
TOYOTA hand−held tester only:
Compared to the normal mode, the check mode has high sens-
ing ability to detect malfunctions.
Furthermore, the same diagnostic items which are detected in
the normal mode can also be detected in the check mode.
(a) Check the DTC.
(1) Initial conditions.
Battery positive voltage 11 V or more
Throttle valve fully closed
Transaxle in the PARK position
Air conditioning switched off
(2) Prepare the TOYOTA hand−held tester.
(3) Connect the TOYOTA hand−held tester to the
DLC3.
(4) Turn the ignition switch ON and switch the TOYOTA
hand−held tester ON.
(5) Switch the TOYOTA hand−held tester from the nor-
mal mode to the check mode (Check that the MIL
flashes.).
(6) Start the engine (The MIL goes off after the engine
start.).
(7) Simulate the conditions of the malfunction de-
scribed by the customer.
NOTICE:
Leave the ignition switch ON until you have checked the
DTCs, etc.
(8) After simulating the malfunction conditions, use the
TOYOTA hand−held tester diagnosis selector to
check the DTCs and freezed frame data, etc.
HINT:
Take care not to turn the ignition switch OFF.
Turning the ignition switch off switches the diagnosis system
from check mode to normal mode, so all DTCs, etc. are erased.
(9) After checking the DTC, inspect the applicable cir-
cuit.

9. HYDRAULIC TEST
Measure the line pressure.
NOTICE:
Do the test at normal operating ATF temperature 50 − 80°C (122 − 176°F).
The line pressure test should always carried out in pairs. One technician should observe the
conditions of wheels or wheel stoppers outside the vehicle while the other is doing the test.
Be careful to prevent SST’s hose from interfering with the exhaust pipe.
(1) Warm up the ATF.
(2) Remove the teat plug on the transaxle case left side and connect SST (See page AX−14. for the
location to connect SST).
SST SST 09992−00094 (09992−00230, 09992−00270)
(3) Chock the 4 wheels.
(4) Fully apply the parking brake.
(5) Start the engine and check idling speed.
(6) Keep your left foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal and shift into the D position.
(7) Measure the line pressure when the engine is idling.
(8) Fully depress the accelerator pedal. Quickly read the highest line pressure when engine speed
reaches stall speed.
NOTICE:
Release the accelerator pedal and stop test if the wheels being to rotate before the engine speed
reaches specified stall speed.
(9) In the same way, do the teat in R position.
Specified line pressure:
ConditionD position kPa (kgf/cm2, psi)R position kPa (kgf/cm2, psi)
Idling353 − 422 (3.6 − 4.3, 51 − 61)598 − 804 (6.1 − 8.2, 87 − 117)
Stall824 − 971 (8.4 − 9.9, 119 − 141)1,530 − 1,780 (15.6 − 18.1, 222 − 257)
If the measured pressures are not up to specified values, recheck the throttle cable adjustment and do a
retest.
Evaluation:
ProblemPossible cause
If the measured value in all positions are higher.
Throttle cable out of adjustment
Throttle valve defective
Regulator valve defective
If the measured values in all positions are lower.

DTC P0750, P0755 Shift Solenoid A/B Malfunction
(Shift Solenoid Valve No. 1 / No. 2)
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The ECM uses signals from the vehicle speed sensor to detect the actual gear position (1st, 2nd, 3rd or O/D
gear). The ECM then compares the actual gear with the shift schedule in the ECM memory to detect mechan-
ical trouble of the shift solenoid valves and valve body.
DTC No.DTC Detecting ConditionTrouble Area
P0750
P0755During normal driving, the gear required by the ECM does not
match the actual gear (2 trip detection logic)Shift solenoid valve No. 1 / No. 2 is stuck open or closed
Valve body is blocked up or stuck
HINT:
Check the shift solenoid valve No. 1 when DTC P0750 is output and check shift solenoid valve No. 2 when
DTC P0755 is output.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1 Check shift solenoid valve No. 1 or No. 2 operation.
PREPARATION:
(a) Remove the oil pan.
(b) Remove the shift solenoid valve No. 1 or No. 2.
CHECK:
(a) Applying 490 kPa (5 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) of compressed air,
check that the shift solenoid valves do not leak air.
(b) When battery positive voltage is supplied to the shift sole-
noid valves, check they open.
NG Replace shift solenoid valve No. 1 or No. 2.
OK
2 Check valve body (See page DI−141).
NG Repair or replace valve body.
OK
