■Adding engine oil
If the oil level is below or near the low level mark, add engin e oil of the
same type as that already in the engine.
Make sure to check the oil type and prepare the items needed
before adding oil.
Remove the oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise.
Add engine oil slowly, checking the dipstick.
Install the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise.
■ Engine oil consumption
A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following
situations, oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may ne ed to be
refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.
● When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or
after replacing the engine
● If low quality oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used
● When driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing, or
when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently
● When leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently
through heavy traffic

● Used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may
cause skin disorders such as inflammation and skin cancer, so c are
should be taken to avoid prolonged and repeated contact. To rem ove used
engine oil from your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
● Dispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do
not dispose of used oil and filters in household trash, in sewe rs or onto the
ground. Call any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer,
or any reliable repairer service station or auto parts store fo r information
concerning recycling or disposal.
● Do not leave used engine oil within the reach of children.
NOTICE
■To prevent serious engine damage
Check the oil level on a regular basis.
■ When replacing the engine oil
● Be careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle components.
● Avoid overfilling, or the engine could be damaged.
● Check the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle.
● Be sure the engine oil filler cap is properly tightened.

■Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” or a similar high qua lity ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-am ine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with
long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant an d 50% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -35 C [-31F])
For more details about coolant, contact any authorized Toyota r etailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■ If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine/power control unit c oolant reservoir
caps, drain cock and water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer test the cap and check for leaks in the
cooling system.
WARNING
■ When the hybrid system is hot
Do not remove the engine/power control unit coolant reservoir c aps.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot cool ant if the
cap is removed, causing serious injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
■ When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor straight antifreeze. The correct mixture of
water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication , corrosion
protection and cooling. Be sure to read the antifreeze or coola nt label.
■ If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to prevent it from damaging p arts or paint.

Low tire inflation pressure such as
• Natural causes ( P. 687)
• Flat tire ( P. 697, 727)
Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified
level.
The light will turn off after a few minutes. In case the
light does not turn off even if the tire inflation pres-
sure is adjusted, have the system checked by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
When the light comes on after blinking for 1 minute:
Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system ( P. 687)
Have the system checked by any authorized Toyota

When trouble arises
■If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner’s Manual is
displayed
● If “Engine Coolant Temperature High.”is shown, follow the instructions
(P. 755).
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact any authoriz ed Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r. Continuing to
drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
• “Braking Power Low.”
• “Charging System Malfunction.”
• “Engine Oil Pressure Low.”
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retai ler or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction.”
• “Check Engine.”
• “Hybrid Battery System Malfunction.”
• “Accelerator system Malfunction.”
• “Entry & Start System Malfunction.”
• “Exhaust filter full.” (P. 529)
• “Hybrid System Stopped”
• “Engine Stopped”
● If the “Low 12-Volt Battery.” is shown,
• When the display goes off after several seconds (displays for about 6
seconds):
Maintain the hybrid system operation for more than 15 minutes a nd
charge the 12-volt battery.
• When the display does not go off:
Start up the hybrid system using the procedures: P. 747
● If “Maintenance required for Traction battery cooling parts. See owner’s
manual.” is shown, the filters may be clogged, the air intake v ents may be
blocked, or there may be a gap i n the duct. Therefore, perform the following
correction procedure.
• If the air intake vents and filters of the hybrid battery (tra ction battery) are
dirty, perform the procedure on P. 638 to clean them.
• If the warning message is shown when the air intake vents and filters of
the hybrid battery (traction battery) are not dirty, have the v ehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately.

■ If “Engine Oil Level Low. Add or Replace Oil.”is displayed
The engine oil level is low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add if neces-
sary.
This message may appear if the vehicle is stopped on a slope. M ove the
vehicle to a level surface and check to see if the message disa ppears.
■ If “Hybrid System Stopped. Steering Power Low.”is displayed
This message is displayed if the hybrid system is stopped while driving.
When steering wheel operations are heavier than usual, grip the steering
wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usual.
■ If “Hybrid System Overheated. Reduced Output Power.” is shown
This message may be shown when driving under severe operating c ondi-
tions. (For example, when driving up a long steep hill.)
Handling method: P. 755
■ If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Over-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Shift into to restart.” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction bat tery) charge
has become extremely low because the shift lever has been left in N for a cer-
tain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Refrain from the use of
position.” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift lever is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) cannot be charged when the shift lever
is in N, shift the shift lever to P when the vehicle is stopped .
■ If “Shift is in Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depres sed and
the shift lever is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift lever to D or R.
■ If “Shift to Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the driver’s door is opened without t urning the
power switch to off with the shift lever in any position other than P.
