The wear patterns on the front and rear wheels
di"Mer:
= Front wheels wear more on the tire shoulder
= Rear wheels wear more in the center of the
tire
Do not drive with tires that have too little tread
depth. This signi"Ncantly reduces traction on wet
roads (hydroplaning).
On vehicles that have the same size front and rear
wheels, rotate the wheels according to the inter- vals in the tire manufacturer\bs warranty book in
your vehicle documents. If this is not available, rotate the tires every 3,000 to 6,000 miles(5,000 to 10,000 km), depending on the wear.Ensure that the direction of rotation is main-
tained.
Notes on storing wheels
When storing wheels, observe the following notes:
= A"ser removing wheels, store them in a cool,
dry and preferably dark place.
= Protect the tires from contact with oil, grease
or fuel.
Overview of the tire-change tool kit
Apart from some country-speci"Nc variants, vehi-
cles are not equipped with a tire-change tool kit. For more information on which tools are required
and approved to perform a wheel change on your
vehicle, consult a quali"Ned specialist workshop.
Required tire-changing tools may include, for
example:
= Jack
= Chock
= Lug wrench
Tire-change tool kit 1 is located under the cargo
"Ooor.
\bDepending on the model, the tire change tool
kit may be located in other positions under
the cargo "Ooor.
The tire-change tool kit includes the following:
= Jack
= Lug wrench
= Wheel studs
= Extension attachment for wheel studs, if nec-
essary (depending on vehicle version)
= Folding chock
= Ratchet wrench
Preparing the vehicle for a wheel change
Requirements:
= The vehicle is not on a slope.

=The vehicle is on solid, non-slippery and level
ground.
= The required tire-change tool kit is available.\bIf your vehicle is not equipped with the tire-
change tool kit, consult a quali"Ned specialist
workshop to "Nnd out about suitable tools.Apply the electric parking brake manually.Move the front wheels to the straight-ahead
position.Shi"s the transmission to position ].Vehicles with level control system: Set the
normal vehicle level (  page 226).Switch o"M the vehicle.Make sure that the vehicle cannot be started.Place chocks or other suitable items under the
front and rear of the wheel that is diagonally
opposite the wheel you wish to change.Raise the vehicle (  page 377).Removing and installing the wheel trim/hub caps
Requirements
= The vehicle is prepared for a wheel change
(  page 375).
Plastic hub cap
To remove:
Turn the center cover of the hub cap counter-
clockwise and remove the hub cap.
To install:
Make sure that the center cover of the hub cap is turned counter-clockwise.Position the hub cap and turn the center coverclockwise until the hub cap engages physically and audibly.Aluminum hub cap
To remove:
Position socket 2 from the tire-change tool
kit on hub cap 1.Position wheel wrench 3 on socket 2.Using wheel wrench 3, turn hub cap 1
counter-clockwise and remove it.
To install:

Raising the vehicle when changing a wheel
Requirements: = There are no persons in the vehicle.
= The vehicle has been prepared for a wheel
change (  page 375).
Important notes on using the jack:
= Use only a vehicle-speci"Nc jack that has been
approved by Mercedes-Benz to raise the vehi-
cle.
= The jack is only designed for raising and hold-
ing the vehicle for a short time while a wheel is being changed and not for maintenance
work under the vehicle.
= The jack must be placed on a "Nrm, "Oat and
non-slip surface. If necessary, use a large, "Oat,
load-bearing, non-slip underlay.
= The foot of the jack must be positioned verti-
cally under the jack support point.
Rules of conduct when the vehicle is raised:
= Never place your hands or feet under the vehi-
cle.
= Never lie under the vehicle.
= Do not start the vehicle and do not release the
electric parking brake.
= Do not open or close any doors or the tailgate.
Using the wheel wrench, loosen the wheel
bolts on the wheel you wish to change by
about one full turn. Do not unscrew the
screws completely.Wheels and tires377

Position of the jack support points
&WARNING Risk of injury from incorrect
positioning of the jack
If you do not position the jack correctly at the
appropriate jacking point of the vehicle, the jack could tip with the vehicle raised.
Only position the jack at the appropriate
jacking point of the vehicle. The base of
the jack must be positioned vertically under the jacking point of the vehicle.*NOTE Damage to the vehicle due to the
jack
If you do not position the jack at the jack sup-
port points provided for this purpose, you
could damage your vehicle.
Only position the jack at the jack sup-
port points provided for this purpose.Take the ratchet wrench out of the tire-change
tool kit and place it on the hexagon nut of the
jack so that the letters "AUF" are visible.Position support 2 of jack 4 on jack sup-
port point 1.Turn ratchet wrench 3 clockwise until jack
support 2 sits completely on jack support
point 1 and the base of the jack lies evenly

Continue to turn ratchet wrench 3 until the
tire is raised a maximum of 1.2 in (3 cm) o"M
the ground.Loosen and remove the wheel (  page 379).
Removing a wheel
Requirements
= The vehicle is raised (  page 377).
*NOTE Mercedes-AMG vehiclesObserve the notes in the Supplement.
You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.
When changing a wheel, avoid applying any force
to the brake discs, as this could impair the level of
comfort when braking.
*NOTE Damage to threading from dirt on
wheel boltsDo not place wheel bolts in sand or on a
dirty surface.Completely unscrew the wheel bolts.Remove the wheel.
Installing a new wheel
Requirements
= The wheel that is to be replaced is removed
(  page 379).
*NOTE Mercedes-AMG vehiclesObserve the notes in the Supplement.
You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.&WARNING Risk of accident from losing a
wheel
Oiled, greased or damaged wheel bolt/wheel
nut threads or wheel hub/wheel mounting
bolt threads can cause the wheel bolts/wheel nuts to come loose.
Never oil or grease the threads.In the event of damage to the threads,
contact a quali"Ned specialist workshop
immediately.Have the damaged wheel bolts or dam-
aged hub threads replaced.Do not continue driving.Observe the information on the choice of tires
(  page 371).
For tires with a speci"Ned direction of rotation, an
arrow on the side wall of the tire indicates the cor-
rect direction of rotation. Observe the direction of rotation when installing.
Place the wheel to be installed on the wheelhub and push it on.&WARNING Risk of injury from tightening
wheel bolts and nuts
If you tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts
when the vehicle is raised, the jack could tip.
Only tighten wheel bolts or wheel nuts
when the vehicle is on the ground.Wheels and tires379

Observe the instructions and safety notes on
"Changing a wheel" (  page 371).For safety reasons, only use wheel bolts which
have been approved by Mercedes-Benz and
for the wheel in question.*NOTE Damage to paintwork of the wheel
rim when screwing in the "Nrst wheel bolt
If the wheel has too much play when screwing
in the "Nrst wheel bolt, the wheel rim paint can
be damaged.
Press the wheel "Nrmly against the wheel
hub when screwing in the "Nrst wheel
bolt.Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern in the order indicated until they are "Nnger-tight.If the collapsible spare wheel has been instal-
led, in"Oate the collapsible spare wheel
(  page 384).Lower the vehicle (  page 380).Lowering the vehicle a"ser a wheel change
Requirements:
= The new wheel has been mounted
(  page 379).
Observe the information on tire pressure
(  page 353).
Place the ratchet wrench onto the hexagon
nut of the jack so that the lettering "AB" is visi-
ble.To lower the vehicle: turn the ratchet wrench
of the jack counter-clockwise.Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern in the order indicated 1 to 5 with a
maximum of 59 lb-"s (80 Nm).Then tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diago-
nal pattern in the order indicated 1 to 5 to
the speci"Ned tightening torque of 111 lb-"s
(150 Nm).&WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-
rect tightening torque
The wheels could come loose if the wheel
bolts or wheel nuts are not tightened to the
prescribed torque.
Ensure that the wheel bolts or wheel
nuts are tightened to the prescribed
tightening torque.If you are not sure, do not move the vehi-
cle. Contact a quali"Ned specialist work-
shop and have the tightening torque checked immediately.Check the tire pressure of the newly mounted
wheel and adjust accordingly.380Wheels and tires

\bThe following does not apply if the new wheelis an emergency spare wheel.Vehicles with a tire pressure loss warning sys-tem: restart the tire pressure loss warning sys-
tem (  page 359).Vehicles with a tire pressure monitoring sys-
tem: restart the tire pressure monitoring sys-
tem (  page 358).
Emergency spare wheel
Notes on the emergency spare wheel
&WARNING Risk of accident caused by
incorrect wheel and tire dimensions
The wheel or tire sizes and the tire type of the
emergency spare wheel or spare wheel and
the wheel to be replaced may di"Mer. The emer-
gency spare wheel or spare wheel can signi"N-
cantly impair driving characteristics of the
vehicle.
To prevent hazardous situations:
Drive carefully.Never install more than one emergency
spare wheel or spare wheel that di"Mers
in size.Only use an emergency spare wheel or spare wheel brie"Oy.Do not deactivate ESP n
.Have the emergency spare wheel or
spare wheel of a di"Merent size replaced
at the nearest quali"Ned specialist work-
shop. The new wheel must have the cor-
rect dimensions.\bThe emergency spare wheel is fastened in the
load compartment under the load compart-
ment "Ooor.
Observe the following notes on installing an emer-
gency spare wheel:
= The maximum permissible speed with an
emergency spare wheel installed is 50 mph
(80 km/h).
= Do not install the emergency spare wheel with
snow chains.
= Replace the emergency spare wheel a"ser six
years at the latest, regardless of wear.
= Use the wheel bolts that are included with the
emergency spare wheel.
= Check the tire pressure of the emergency
spare wheel installed. Correct the pressure as
necessary.\bThe speci"Ned tire pressure is stated on the
label of the emergency spare wheel.\bVehicles with a tire pressure monitoring sys-
tem: if an emergency spare wheel is installed,
the tire pressure monitoring system cannot
function reliably. For a few minutes a"ser an
emergency spare wheel is installed, the sys- tem may still display the tire pressure of the
removed wheel. Only restart the system again when the emergency spare wheel has been
replaced with a new wheel.

on the sticker of the emergency spare wheel
and on the tire in"Oation compressor.Remove the sticker with the label 50 mph
(80 km/h) from the tire in"Oation compressor
housing and a"Px it to the instrument cluster
within the driver\bs "Neld of vision.Remove the tire in"Oation compressor from the
stowage space under the trunk "Ooor.
(  page 333)Pull "Nller hose 1 and plug 3 out of the tire
in"Oation compressor housing.Insert plug 7 of "Nller hose 1 in the socket
on the tire in"Oation compressor and then turn
it until plug 7 engages.Unscrew the cap from the valve on the emer-
gency spare wheel.Screw union nut 2 of "Nller hose 1 onto the
valve.Make sure on and o"M switch 4 of the tire
