TOWING YOUR VEHICLE
PRECAUTIONS
Use the following guidelines when towingyour vehicle. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in vehicle damage not coveredby the vehicle warranty.
Note:Make sure you properly secure yourvehicle to the tow vehicle.
Note:If you are unsure of the vehicle’sconfiguration, contact an authorized dealer.
RECREATIONALLY TOWING YOUR
VEHICLE - PLUG-IN HYBRID
ELECTRIC VEHICLE (PHEV)
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing. An example ofrecreational towing is towing your vehiclebehind a motorhome. These guidelinesensure that you do not damage thetransmission.
Note: Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 168).
You can tow your vehicle with all four wheelson the ground under the followingconditions:
•You switch Neutral Tow on.
•Your vehicle is facing forward for towingin a forward direction.
•You release the parking brake.
•You do not exceed 70 mph (113 km/h).
Switching Neutral Tow On
1.Switch your vehicle on in accessorymode.
2.Press the menu button on the steeringwheel to enter the information displaymain menu.
3.Select Settings.
4.Select Neutral Tow.
5.Follow the instructions on the informationdisplay.
6.Fully press the brake pedal.
7.Shift into neutral (N).
8.Switch the ignition off.
Note:Switching neutral tow on requiresbattery power.
Note:If the parking brake is applied, amessage appears in the information display.
Note:If your vehicle has an ignition key, youcannot remove the key from the ignitionwhen the transmission is in neutral (N) andyour vehicle is off.
Note:Start the engine and allow it to run fora few minutes at the beginning of each day,and every six hours or fewer. With the enginerunning and your foot on the brake, shift intodrive (D) and then into reverse (R) beforeshifting back into neutral (N). Beforecontinuing to tow, switch neutral tow on.

H. U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number(TIN): This begins with the letters DOTand indicates that the tire meets allfederal standards. The next twonumbers or letters are the plant codedesignating where it was manufactured,
the next two are the tire size code andthe last four numbers represent theweek and year the tire was built. Forexample, the numbers 317 mean the 31stweek of 1997. After 2000, the numbers
go to four digits. For example, 2501means the 25th week of 2001. Thenumbers in between are identificationcodes used for traceability. Thisinformation is used to contact customersif a tire defect requires a recall.
I. M+S or M/S: Mud and Snow, or
AT: All Terrain, or
AS: All Season.
J. Tire Ply Composition and MaterialUsed: Indicates the number of plies orthe number of layers of rubber-coatedfabric in the tire tread and sidewall. Tiremanufacturers also must indicate the plymaterials in the tire and the sidewall,which include steel, nylon, polyester,and others.
K. Maximum Load: Indicates themaximum load in kilograms and poundsthat can be carried by the tire. See theSafety Compliance Certification Label(affixed to either the door hinge pillar,door-latch post, or the door edge thatmeets the door-latch post, next to thedriver's seating position), for the correcttire pressure for your vehicle.
L. Treadwear, Traction andTemperature Grades:
*Treadwear The treadwear grade is acomparative rating based on the wearrate of the tire when tested undercontrolled conditions on a specifiedgovernment test course. For example,a tire graded 150 would wear one andone-half times as well on the
government course as a tire graded 100.

It is recommended that the two fronttires or two rear tires generally bereplaced as a pair if the worn tires stillhave usable depth.
To avoid potential All-Wheel Drive (AWD)malfunction or (AWD) system damage,it is recommended to replace all fourtires rather than mixing significantly worntires with new tires.
The tire pressure sensors mounted inthe wheels (originally installed on yourvehicle) are not designed to be used inaftermarket wheels.
The use of wheels or tires notrecommended may affect the operationof your tire pressure monitoring system.
If the tire pressure monitoring system
indicator is flashing, your system ismalfunctioning. Your replacement tiremight be incompatible with your tirepressure monitoring system, or somecomponent of the system may bedamaged.
Age
WARNING: Tires degrade overtime depending on many factors suchas weather, storage conditions, andconditions of use (load, speed, inflationpressure) the tires experiencethroughout their lives.In general, tires should be replacedafter six years regardless of treadwear. However, heat caused by hotclimates or frequent high loadingconditions can accelerate the agingprocess and may require tires to bereplaced more frequently.You should replace your spare tirewhen you replace the road tires orafter six years due to aging even if it
has not been used.
U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number
Both United States and Canada Federalregulations require tire manufacturersto place standardized information on thesidewall of all tires. This informationidentifies and describes the fundamentalcharacteristics of the tire and alsoprovides a U.S. DOT Tire IdentificationNumber for safety standard certificationand in case of a recall.
This begins with the letters DOT andindicates that the tire meets all federalstandards. The next two numbers orletters are the plant code designatingwhere it was manufactured, the next twoare the tire size code and the last fournumbers represent the week and yearthe tire was built. For example, the

ROLLOVER WARNING
WARNING: Utility vehicles have asignificantly higher rollover rate than othertypes of vehicles.
WARNING: Vehicles with a highercenter of gravity (utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
WARNING: Do not becomeoverconfident in the ability of four-wheeldrive vehicles. Although a four-wheel drivevehicle may accelerate better than atwo-wheel drive vehicle in low tractionsituations, it won't stop any faster thantwo-wheel drive vehicles. Always drive ata safe speed.
Utility vehicles and trucks handle differentlythan passenger cars in the various drivingconditions that are encountered on streets,highways and off-road. Utility vehicles andtrucks are not designed for cornering atspeeds as high as passenger cars any morethan low-slung sports cars are designed toperform satisfactorily under off-roadconditions.

The BBB AUTO LINE program consists oftwo parts – mediation and arbitration. Duringmediation, a representative of the BBB willcontact both you and Ford Motor Companyto explore options for settlement of the claim.If an agreement is not reached duringmediation or you do not want to participatein mediation, and if your claim is eligible, youmay participate in the arbitration process. Anarbitration hearing will be scheduled so thatyou can present your case in an informalsetting before an impartial person. Thearbitrator considers the testimony providedand makes a decision after the hearing.
