HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLEINFORMATION – FREQUENTLY ASKEDQUESTIONS
What should I do if the vehicle runs out offuel and the high voltage battery is out ofcharge?
Refuel and start your vehicle normally. The engine will recharge the highvoltage battery.
Why does the engine sometimes start atkey-on?
The vehicle's computer determines if anengine start is required at key-on. Itstarts the engine when necessary forcabin heating, windshield defrost, or ifthe outside temperature is low.
Can I put E15 or E85 in my vehicle, and howwill it affect my fuel economy?
Your hybrid vehicle can use E15 (15%ethanol, 85% gasoline) fuel, but you maynotice slightly reduced fuel economybecause ethanol contains less energyper gallon than gasoline. Your hybridvehicle is not designed to use E85 (85%ethanol).
Why does it take a long time before theengine shuts down?
There are several reasons the enginestays on for an extended amount of timewhen you first start it. One commonreason is to make sure that theemissions components are warmenough to minimize tailpipe emission. As the climate gets cooler, theengine-on time is extended.

WHAT IS LOW ENGINE USE MODE
Low engine use mode maintains properengine lubrication at sufficient temperatureand activates when you drive your vehiclewith limited engine operation.
HOW DOES LOW ENGINE USE MODEWORK
When in low engine use mode, your vehicleruns the engine as necessary. When lowengine use mode begins, a message appearsin the information display. If low engine usemode does not complete before you switchyour vehicle off, it continues the next timeyou start your vehicle and the messagereappears.
Note:Pure EV now mode is not availablewhen in low engine use mode.

WHAT IS THE CATALYTIC
CONVERTER
The catalytic converter is part of yourvehicle's emissions system and filters harmfulpollutants from the exhaust gas.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Do not park, idle or driveyour vehicle on dry grass or other dryground cover. The emission system heatsup the engine compartment and exhaustsystem, creating the risk of fire.
WARNING: The normal operatingtemperature of the exhaust system is veryhigh. Never work around or attempt torepair any part of the exhaust system untilit has cooled. Use special care whenworking around the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter heats up to a veryhigh temperature after only a short periodof engine operation and stays hot after theengine is switched off.
WARNING: Exhaust leaks may resultin entry of harmful and potentially lethalfumes into the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle inspectedimmediately. Do not drive if you smellexhaust fumes.
To avoid damaging the catalytic converter:
•Do not crank the engine for more than10 seconds at a time.
•Do not run the engine with a spark pluglead disconnected.
•Do not push-start or tow-start yourvehicle. Use booster cables. See JumpStarting the Vehicle (page 402).
•Use the correct fuel. See Fuel andRefueling (page 223).
•Do not switch the ignition off when yourvehicle is moving.
•Avoid running out of fuel.
•Have the items listed in scheduledmaintenance information performedaccording to the specified schedule.
Note:Do not make any unauthorizedchanges to your vehicle or engine. By law, vehicle owners and anyone whomanufactures, repairs, or services a fleet ofvehicles are not permitted to intentionallyremove an emission control device orprevent it from working.

Will wet driving conditions effect mybraking abilities?
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedala few times when driving from a carwash or standing water to dry thebrakes.
Is brake noise considered normal?
Occasional brake noise is normal. If ametal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them.If the vehicle has continuous vibrationor shudder in the steering wheel whilebraking, an authorized dealer shouldcheck your vehicle.
When should you replace the brake fluid?
Brake fluid absorbs water over timewhich degrades the effectiveness of thebrake fluid. Change the brake fluid atthe specified intervals to preventdegraded braking performance. SeeNormal Scheduled Maintenance (page568).

The system only applies the brakes for ashort period of time when an event occurs.Act as soon as you notice the brakes applyto remain in control of the vehicle. If you donot intervene the vehicle may start to moveagain.
Note:Certain add-on devices around thebumper or fascia may create false alerts. Forexample, large trailer hitches, bicycle orsurfboard racks, license plate brackets, bumper covers or any other device that mayblock the normal detection zone of thesystem. Remove the add-on device toprevent false alerts.
Note:The system does not react to small ormoving objects, particularly those close tothe ground.
Note:The system does not operate duringhard acceleration or steering.
Note:If your vehicle sustains damage to thebumper or fascia leaving it misaligned orbent, it could alter the sensing zone causinginaccurate measurement of obstacles orfalse alerts.
Note:Vehicle loading and suspensionchanges can impact the angle of the sensorsand may change the normal detection zoneof the system resulting in inaccuratemeasurement of obstacles or false alerts.
Note:When you connect a trailer, the systemmay detect the trailer and provide an alert,or the system turns off. If the system doesnot turn off, manually switch the system offafter you connect the trailer.
Note:You may experience reduced systemperformance on road surfaces that limitdeceleration. For example, roads with ice, loose gravel, mud or sand.
