4-5. Using the driving support systems
Driving
*: If equipped
■If “Exhaust Filter Full See Owner's
Manual” is shown on the
multi-information display
●The message may be displayed while
high load driving with particulate mat- ter accumulating.
●Engine output (engine speed) is restricted when a certain amount of
particulate matter accumulates, how-
ever, it is possible to drive the vehicle unless the malfunction indicator lamp
comes on.
●Particulate matter can accumulate
more quickly if the vehicle is fre-
quently driven short trips or at low
speeds, or if the engine is regularly started in an extremely cold environ-
ment. Excessive accumulation of par-
ticulate matter can be prevented by periodically driving long distances
continuously with intermittent releas-
ing of the accelerator pedal, such as when driving on highways and free-
ways.
■If the malfunction indicator lamp
comes on or “Engine Maintenance required Visit Your Dealer” is
shown on the multi-information
display
The amount of accumulated particulate
matter has exceeded a certain level.
Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.
GPF (Gasoline Particu-
late Filter) system*
The GPF system collects par-
ticulate matter in the exhaust
gas by using an exhaust gas
filter.
The system will operate to
regenerate the filter automati-
cally, depending on the vehicle
conditions.
NOTICE
■To prevent the GPF system from
not operating properly
●Do not use fuel other than the spec-
ified type
●Do not modify the exhaust pipes

7-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
Maintenance and care
1 Pull the hood lock release lever.
The hood will pop up slightly.
2Pull the auxiliary catch lever to
the left and lift the hood.
WA R N I N G
●Do not smoke, cause sparks or
expose an open flame to fuel or the
battery. Fuel and battery fumes are flammable.
●Be extremely cautious when work-ing on the battery. It contains poi-
sonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.
●Take care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and dam-
age painted surfaces. If fluid gets
on your hands or in your eyes, flush the affected area with clean water
immediately.
If you still experience discomfort, consult a doctor.
■When working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the engine switch is OFF.
With the engine switch in ON, the electric cooling fan may automatically
start to run if the air conditioning is on
and/or the coolant temperature is high. (P.426)
■Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying
or falling material, fluid spray, etc.
from getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
■If you remove the air cleaner fil- ter
Driving with the air cleaner filter
removed may cause excessive engine wear due to dirt in the air.
■If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to
go down slightly as the brake pads
wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refill-
ing, it may indicate a serious problem.

■Engine oil selection (1ZR-FAE
engine)
“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used
in your Toyota vehicle. Toyota rec-
ommends the use of approved
“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil”.
Another motor oil of matching qual-
ity can also be used.
Oil grade:
0W-20 and 5W-30:
API grade SM “Energy-Conserv-
ing”, SN “Resource-Conserving”,
SN PLUS “Resource-Conserving”
or SP “Resource-Conserving”; or
ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity (SAE):
Preferred
Temperature range anticipated
before next oil change
SAE 0W-20 is filled in to your Toyota
vehicle at manufacturing, and the
best choice for good fuel economy
and good starting in cold weather. If
SAE 0W-20 oil is not available,
SAE 5W-30 oil may be used. How-
ever, it should be replaced with
SAE 0W-20 at the ne xt oil change.
Oil viscosity (0W-20 is explained
here as an example):
• The 0W in 0W-20 indicates the
characteristic of the oil which
allows cold startability. Oils with a
lower value before the W allow
for easier starting of the engine
in cold weather.
• The 20 in 0W-20 indicates the
viscosity characteristic of the oil
when the oil is at high tempera-
ture. An oil with a higher viscos-
