WARNING
■ If a safety system warning light does not come on
Should a safety system light such as ABS and SRS airbag warning light not
come on when you start the hybrid system, this could mean that these sys-
tems are not available to help protect you in an accident, whic h could result
in death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by any a uthorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

■ Engine speed
On Hybrid Electric Vehicles, engine speed is precisely controll ed in order to
help improve fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions, etc.
There are times when the engine speed that is displayed may dif fer even
when vehicle operation and driving conditions are the same.
■ Outside temperature display
● In the following situations, the correct outside temperature may not be dis-
played, or the display may take longer than normal to change.
• When stopped, or driving at low speeds (less than 25 km/h [16 mph])
• When the outside temperature has changed suddenly (at the entr ance/
exit of a garage, tunnel, etc.)
● When “--” is displayed, the system may be malfunctioning.
Take your vehicle to any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota a uthorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■ Adjusting the clock (if equipped)
The clocks can be adjusted on the multimedia system screen.
Refer to “Navigation and multimedia system Owner’s manual” or “ Multimedia
owner’s manual”.
NOTICE
■ To prevent damage to the engine and its components
The engine may be overheating if the engine coolant temperature gauge is
in the red zone (“H”). In this case, immediately stop the vehic le in a safe
place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely. ( P. 757)

■Important points regarding stability
Vehicle movement resulting from uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Frequently check behind when mov -
ing alongside such vehicles. As soon as such vehicle movement
occurs, immediately start to decelerate smoothly by slowly appl ying
the brakes. Always steer the vehicle straight ahead while braki ng.
■Passing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length of your vehicle and trailer and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is sufficient befor e exe-
cuting lane changes.
■Transmission information
To maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system perfo r-
mance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in
D. Shift the shift lever to B.
■If the engine overheats
Towing a loaded trailer up a long, steep incline in temperature s
exceeding 30 C (85F) may result in the engine overheating. If the
engine coolant temperature gauge indicates that the engine is o ver-
heating, turn the air conditioning off immediately, leave the r oad and
stop the vehicle in a safe place. ( P. 757)
■When parking the vehicle
Always place wheel chocks under the wheels of both the vehicle
and trailer. Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift l ever to P.

Maintenance and care
■Where to go for maintenance service?
In order to maintain your vehicle in the best possible conditio n, Toyota recom-
mends that maintenance service operations as well as other insp ections and
repairs be carried out by authorized Toyota retailers or repair ers or other duly
qualified and equipped professionals. For repairs and services covered by
your warranty, please visit an authorized Toyota retailers or r epairer, who will
use genuine Toyota parts in repairing any difficulties you may encounter.
There can also be advantages in utilizing authorized Toyota ret ailers or
repairers for non-warranty repairs and services, as members of the Toyota
network will be able to expertly assist you with any difficulti es you may
encounter.
Your authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer will perform all of the scheduled maintenance on your vehicle reliably
and economically due to their experience with Toyota vehicles.
■ Does your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in performance and sounds, and visu al tip-offs
that indicate service is needed. Some important clues are:
● Engine misses, stumbling or pinging
● Appreciable loss of power
● Strange engine noises
● A fluid leak under the vehicle (However, water dripping from the air condi-
tioning system after use is normal.)
● Change in exhaust sound (This may indicate a dangerous carbon monoxide
leak. Drive with the windows open and have the exhaust system c hecked
immediately.)
● Flat-looking tires, excessive tire squeal when cornering, uneven tire wear
● Vehicle pulls to one side when driven straight on a level road
● Strange noises related to suspension movement
● Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling brake pedal, pedal almost
touches the floor, vehicle pulls to one side when braking
● Engine coolant temperature continually higher than normal (P. 686, 757)
If you notice any of these clues, take your vehicle to any auth orized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r as soon as pos-
sible. Your vehicle may need adjustment or repair.

■Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” or a similar high qua lity ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-am ine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with
long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant an d 50% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -35 C [-31F])
For more details about coolant, contact any authorized Toyota r etailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■ If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine/power control unit c oolant reservoir
caps, drain cock and water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer test the cap and check for leaks in the
cooling system.
WARNING
■ When the hybrid system is hot
Do not remove the engine/power control unit coolant reservoir c aps.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot cool ant if the
cap is removed, causing serious injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
■ When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor straight antifreeze. The correct mixture of
water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication , corrosion
protection and cooling. Be sure to read the antifreeze or coola nt label.
■ If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to prevent it from damaging p arts or paint.
