If you leave your foot on the brake pedal when

This increases the braking distance and the
brake system can even fail. 
Never use the brake pedal as a footrest.

driving. *

Observe the changed vehicle height with

oof equipment. Notes on driving with a roof load, trailer or fully
laden v
ehicle
When driving with a loaded roof luggage rack or
trailer as well as with a fully laden or fully occu-
pied vehicle, the vehicle's driving and steering
characteristics change.
You should bear the following in mind:
= Do not exceed the permissible roof load and
towing capacity. Also observe the technical
data in the printed Owner's Manual.
= Evenly distribute the roof load, and place
heavy objects at the bottom. Also comply with
the notes on loading the vehicle
( page 122).
= Drive attentively, and avoid suddenly pulling
away, braking and steering as well as rapid
cornering. 166

Notes on driving on salt-treated roads
The br aking eMect is limited on salt-treated roads.
Therefore, observe the following notes:
= due to salt build-up on the brake disks and
brakepads, the braking distance can increase
considerably or result in braking only on one
side
= maintain a much greater safe distance to the
vehicle in front
To remove salt build-up:
= brake occasionally while paying attention to
the traPc conditions
= carefully depress the brake pedal at the end of
the journey and when starting the next jour-
ney
Notes on aquaplaning
Aquaplaning can take place once a certain
amount of water has accumulated on the road
surface. Observe the following notes during heavy precipi-
t ation or in conditions in which aquaplaning may
occur:
= reduce speed
= avoid tyre ruts
= avoid sudden steering movements
= brake carefully

Notes on driving through water on the road sur-
f
ace
Water which has entered the vehicle can damage
the drive system, electrics and transmission.
Observe the following if you must drive through
water:
= The water, when calm, may only reach the
lower edge of the vehicle body.
= Drive at walking pace at most; water can oth-
erwise enter the vehicle interior.
= Vehicles travelling in front, or oncoming vehi-
cles, can create waves which may exceed the
maximum permissible depth of the water. The braking

the traPc conditions until braking power has been
fully restored. ECO display function
The ECO display summarises your driving charac-
t

eristics from the start of the journey to its com-
pletion and assists you in adopting an ePcient
driving style to maximise range.
You can inOuence energy consumption by doing
the following:
= driving with particular care (  page 169)
= driving in drive program  ( page 171) Driving and parking

The lettering in the segment will light up brightly,
t he outer edge will light up and the segment will
Nll up when the following driving style is adopted:
= 1 Steady speed
= 2 Gentle deceleration and rolling
= 3 Moderate acceleration
The lettering in the segment will be grey, the outer
edge will be dark and the segment will empty
when the following driving style is adopted:
= 1 Fluctuations in speed
= 2 Heavy braking
= 3 Sporty acceleration The ECO display will show you when you have

iven economically:
= The three segments will Nll up completely at
the same time
= The edges around all three segments will light
up
The additional range achieved as a result of your
driving style in comparison with a driver with a
very sporty driving style will be shown in the
centre of display 4. The range displayed does
not indicate a Nxed reduction in consumption. Recuperative brake system
Function of the regenerative brake system
Depending on t

he selected recuperation level, the
electric motors are operated as an alternator
when in overrun mode and during braking in order
to charge the high-voltage battery while driving.
As soon as you take your foot oM the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is in motion and in trans-
mission position h, recuperation in overrun
mode is initiated. The higher the recuperation, the more sharply the
v

ehicle is braked when coasting and the more
electrical energy is fed into the high-voltage bat-
tery.
The deceleration in overrun mode may not be suf-
ficient depending on the driving conditions.
Decelerating to a standstill is not possible. Also
brake with the service brake if necessary. Always
adapt your speed to the driving conditions and
keep a suPcient distance.
The recuperative brake system has the following
characteristics:
= supports braking with electronically controlled
brake force boosting
= converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into
electric energy
% If you brake hard, the mechanical brake is
also used. This means t
hat the maximum
recuperative energy cannot be recovered. The
more you drive and brake in an anticipatory
manner, the more ePciently energy can be
recuperated. 168
Driving and parking

System limits
The br
aking eMect of the electric motor during
recuperation in overrun mode may be reduced or
may not be available at all in the following situa-
tions:
= when the high-voltage battery charge level
increases
= if the high-voltage battery is not yet at a nor-
mal operating temperature
In these cases, the desired deceleration is set by
the brake control system.
Manually setting recuperative deceleration
You can use the steering wheel gearshis paddles
to manually adjust the intensity of recuperation in
overrun mode. %
When the vehicle is started again, the follow-
ing r
ecuperation level is set:
= hX: if hX was selected previ-
ously.
= h: if a recuperation level other than
hX was selected previously.
The following recuperation levels are available: = hX Int

ent events ahead can be detected.

ECO Assist analyses data for the vehicle's expec-
ted route. This allows the system to optimally Driving and parking

adjust the driving style for the route ahead, use
minimal ener
gy and recuperate.
ECO Assist is displayed on the Assistance
menu(  page 253). If the system detects an
event ahead, e.g. a vehicle ahead, and the driving
style can be optimised, the event will appear on
the instrument display.
Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the follow-
ing events can also be detected and displayed for
the route section ahead:
= Speed limit
= Downhill gradient
= Junctions and roundabouts
= Bends Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:

for ECO Assist to react to a speed limit, the auto-
matic adoption of speed limits must be activated
(  page 229). These route events will be detec-
ted only if route-based speed adaptation is active
(  page 218). 1

The segments of distance display 2 sho
w the
distance to the event ahead as follows:
= A few segments light up: the event ahead is
near.
= Many segments light up: the event ahead is
further away.
If ECO Assist is active, "Foot oM the accelerator"
symbol 3 will appear on the Assistance menu
on the instrument display, on the head-up display
and next to the transmission position display. 170

When the vehicle nears an event, ECO Assist will
calculat e the optimal speed for minimal energy
consumption based on the distance and speed.
"Foot oM the accelerator" recommendation 3 will
appear on the instrument display.
If you take your foot oM the accelerator pedal in
good time, the remaining segments on the display
will successively turn green until the event shown
is reached. The drivetrain will be set for minimal
energy consumption. The vehicle will recuperate
autonomously and thus charge the high-voltage
battery.
% You can also manually increase or reduce

ecuperation. However, ECO Assist is availa-
ble only in the hX setting (  page 169).
If there is no response to "Foot oM t
he accelera-
tor" recommendation 3, the segments will
remain white.
The event will be shown for a short time aser it
has been passed.
If the event involves a vehicle in front, all seg-
ments will immediately turn green once there is a
response to "Foot oM the accelerator" prompt 3.If ECO Assist cannot identify a recommendation
f

or adjusting the driving style for the event ahead,
nothing will be displayed. The system will be pas-
sive.
System limits
ECO Assist can function even more precisely if
the route is adhered to when route guidance is
active. The basic function is also available without
active route guidance. Not all information and
traPc situations can be foreseen. The quality
depends on the available map data.
ECO Assist is only an aid. The driver is responsible
for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good
time. You must be ready to brake at all times irre-
spective of whether the system is active.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following situations:
= If there is poor visibility, e.g. due to insuPcient
illumination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog or heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections. =
If t he windscreen is dirty in the vicinity of the
multifunction camera.
= If the multifunction camera is misted up, dam-
aged or obscured.
= If road signs are hard to detect, e.g. due to
dirt, snow or insuPcient lighting, or because
they are obscured.
= If the digital road map of the navigation sys-
tem has incorrect or outdated information.
= If signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in road-
works or in adjacent lanes.
= If the radar sensors are dirty or obscured.
= When you drive on roads with steep uphill or
downhill gradients.
= If there are narrow vehicles in front, such as

In heating mode, the windows may mist up
more quickly.
= Maximum permissible speed limited to
130 km/h
If you depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the point of resistance (kickdown), the limit
will be raised to the maximum permissible
speed.
= When the route option Electric Intelligence is
switched on and route guidance is active, a
chequered Oag on the speedometer indicates
the maximum permissible speed recommen- ded by active range monitoring. It is the driv-
er's o
wn responsibility to comply with them in
order to reach the next scheduled charging
station. Notes on the roof load display
Certain drive programs and ESP
n

ttings are
unsuitable for transporting a roof load.
If one of these drive programs is set or selected,
the W symbol is shown as a warning. When
this symbol is shown, the selected drive program
is not suitable for transporting a load on the roof.

= Individual drive program with the Sport ESP n
setting
