When the RCTA function is disabled, the
RCTA OFF indicator ( P.74) illuminates
on the multi-information display. (Each time the power switch is turned off then
changed to ON mode, the RCTA function
will be enabled automatically.)
QOutside rear view mirror indicator visi-
bility
In strong sunlight, the outside rear view mir-
ror indicator may be difficult to see.
QHearing the RCTA buzzer
The RCTA buzzer may be difficult to hear
over loud noises, such as if the audio system
volume is high.
QWhen “Rear Cross Traffic Alert
Unavailable” is shown on the multi-
information display
Ice, snow, mud, etc., may be attached to the
rear bumper around the sensors. ( P.215)
Remove the ice, snow, mud, etc., attached
to the rear bumper around the sensors to
return the function to normal. Additionally,
the sensors may not operate normally when
driving in extremely hot or cold environ-
ments.

QOperation of the RCTA function
The RCTA function uses rear side radar sensors to detect vehicles approaching
from the right or left at the rear of the ve hicle and alerts the driver of the presence
of such vehicles by flashing the outside rear view mirror indicators and sounding a
buzzer.

right or left at the rear of the vehicle is
detected, the following will be dis-
played on the Center Display.

QThe RCTA function is operational when
The RCTA function operates when all of the
following conditions are met:
OThe power switch is in ON mode.
OThe RCTA function is on.
OThe shift lever is in R.
OThe vehicle speed is less than approxi-
mately 5 mph (8 km/h).
OThe approaching vehicle speed is
between approximately 5 mph (8 km/h)
and 18 mph (28 km/h).
QSetting the buzzer volume
The buzzer volume can be adjusted on the
multi-information display.

QConditions under wh ich the system will
not detect a vehicle
The RCTA function is not designed to
detect the following types of vehicles
and/or objects:
OVehicles approaching from directly
behind
OVehicles backing up in a parking space
next to your vehicle
OVehicles that the sensors cannot detect
due to obstructions
OGuardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles
and similar stationary objects*
OSmall motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians,
etc.*
OVehicles moving away from your vehicle
OVehicles approaching from the parking
spaces next to your vehicle*
OThe distance between the sensor and
approaching vehicle gets too close
*: Depending on the conditions, detection of a vehicle and/or object may occur.
QSituations in which the system may not
operate properly
The RCTA function may not detect vehicles
correctly in the following situations:
OWhen the sensor is misaligned due to a
strong impact to the sensor or its sur-
rounding area.
OWhen mud, snow, ice, a sticker, etc., is
covering the sensor or surrounding area
on the rear bumper.
OWhen driving on a road surface that is
wet with standing water during bad

weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or fog.
OWhen multiple vehicles are approaching
with only a small gap between each vehi-
cle.
OWhen a vehicle is approaching at high
speed.
OWhen equipment that may obstruct a
sensor is installed, such as a towing eye-
let, bumper protector (an additional trim
strip, etc.), bicycle carrier, or snow plow.
OWhen backing up on a slope with a sharp
change in grade.
OWhen backing out of a sharp angle park-
ing spot.
OWhen towing a trailer.
OWhen there is a significant difference in
height between your vehicle and the
vehicle that enters the detection area.
OWhen a sensor or the area around a sen-
sor is extremely hot or cold.
OIf the suspension has been modified or
tires of a size other than specified are
installed.
OIf the front of the vehicle is raised or low-ered due to the carried load.
OWhen turning while backing up.
OWhen a vehicle turns into the detection
area.
QSituations in which the system may
operate even if there is no possibility of a
collision
Instances of the RCTA function unneces-
sarily detecting a vehicle and/or object may
increase in the following situations:
OWhen the parking space faces a street
and vehicles are being driven on the
street.
OWhen the distance between your vehicle
and metal objects, such as a guardrail,
wall, sign, or parked vehicle, which may
reflect electrical waves toward the rear of
the vehicle, is short.

OWhen equipment that may obstruct a
sensor is installed, such as a towing eye-
let, bumper protector (an additional trim
strip, etc.), bicycle carrier, or snow plow.
OWhen a vehicle passes by the side of your
vehicle.
OWhen a detected vehicle turns while
approaching the vehicle.
OWhen there are spinning objects near
your vehicle such as the fan of an air con-
ditioning unit.
OWhen water is splashed or sprayed
toward the rear bumper, such as from a
sprinkler.
OMoving objects (flags, exhaust fumes,
large rain droplets or snowflakes, rain
water on the road surface, etc.).
OWhen the distance between your vehicle
and a guardrail, wall, etc., that enters the
detection area is short.
OGratings and gutters.
OWhen a sensor or the area around a sen-
sor is extremely hot or cold.
OIf the suspension has been modified or
tires of a size other than specified are
installed.
OIf the front of the vehicle is raised or low-
ered due to the carried load.

RCD OFF icon
When the RCD function is disabled, the
RCD OFF icon illuminates. (Each time the
power switch is turned off then changed to
ON mode, the RCD function will be
enabled automatically.)
Use the meter control switches to
enable/disable the RCD function.
RCD (Rear Camera Detec-
tion) function

When the vehicle is backing up, the
rear camera detection function can
detect pedestrians in the detection
area behind the vehicle. If a pedes-
trian is detected, a buzzer will
sound and an icon will be displayed
on the Center Display to inform the
driver of the pedestrian.
WARNING
QCautions regarding the use of the
system
The recognition and control capabilities
for this system are limited.
The driver should alwa ys drive safely by
always being responsible without over
relying on the system and have a under-
standing of the surrounding situations.
QTo ensure the system can operate
properly
Observe the following, otherwise there is
the danger that could lead to an acci-
dent.
OAlways clean the camera without
damaging it.
ODo not install market electronic parts
(such as Illuminated license plate, fog
lamps, etc.) in the camera vicinity.
ODo not subject the camera vicinity to
strong impacts. If the vicinity is sub-
jected to a strong impact, have the
vehicle inspected by your Lexus
dealer.
ODo not disassemble, remodel or paint
the camera.
ODo not attach accessories or stickers
to the camera.
ODo not install market protection parts
(bumper trim, etc.) to the rear bumper.
OMaintain suitable tire air pressure.
OMake sure the trunk is completely
closed.
QRCD function is turned off
In the following situations the system
turns off. The RCD function may not
operate properly and thus there is the
danger that an accident may occur.
OThe contents mentioned above are not
observed.
OSuspensions other than Lexus genu-
ine parts are installed.

QIf “Rear Camera Detection Unavailable
Remove the Dirt of Rear Camera” is
displayed on the multi-information dis-
play
A rear camera lens may be dirty or covered
with snow or ice. In such cases, if it is
removed from the rear camera lens, the
system should return to normal. (It may be
necessary to drive the vehicle for some time
before the system returns to normal.)
QIf “Rear Camera Detection Unavail-
able” is displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display
OIf this message is displayed after the 12-
volt battery has been disconnected and
reconnected, fully turn the steering wheel
to the left and then the right on level
ground.
OIf this message is displayed only when the
shift lever is in R, the rear camera lens
may be dirty. Clean the rear camera lens.

QSituations in which the system may not
operate properly
OSome pedestrians, such as the following,
may not be detected by the rear camera
detection function, preventing the func-
tion from operating properly:
• Pedestrians who are bending forward or squatting
• Pedestrians who are lying down
• Pedestrians who are running
• Pedestrians who suddenly enter the detection area
• People riding a bicycle, skateboard, or other light vehicle
• Pedestrians wearing oversized clothing such as a rain coat, long skirt, etc., making
their silhouette obscure
• Pedestrians whose body is partially hid- den by an object, such as a cart or
umbrella
• Pedestrians which are obscured by dark- ness, such as at night
OIn some situations, such as the following,
pedestrians may not be detected by the
rear camera detection function, prevent-
ing the function from operating properly:
• When backing up in inclement weather (rain, snow, fog, etc.)
• When the rear camera is obscured (dirt, snow, ice, etc. are attached) or scratched
• When a very bright light, such as the sun,
or the headlights of another vehicle,
shines directly into the rear camera
• When backing up in a place where the
surrounding brightness changes sud-
denly, such as at the entrance or exit of a
garage or underground parking lot
• When backing up in a dim environment such as during dusk or in an underground
parking lot
• When the camera position and direction are deviated
• When a towing hook is attached
• When water droplets are flowing on the camera lens
• When the vehicle height is extremely
changed (nose up, nose down)
• When tire chains or an emergency tire
puncture repair kit are used
QSituations in which the system may
operate unexpectedly
OEven though there are no pedestrians in the detection area, some objects, such as
the following, may be detected, possibly
causing the rear camera detection func-
tion to operate.
• Three dimensional objects, such as a pole, traffic cone, fence, or parked vehi-
cle
• Moving objects, such as a car or motor- cycle
• Objects moving toward your vehicle when backing up, such as flags or pud-
dles (or airborne matter, such as smoke,
steam, rain, or snow)
• Cobblestone or gravel roads, tram rails, road repairs, white lines, pedestrian
crossings or fallen leaves on the road
• Metal covers (gratings), such as those used for drainage ditches
• Objects reflected in a puddle or on a wet road surface
•Shadows on the road
OIn some situations, such as the following,
the rear camera detection function may
operate even though there are no pedes-
trians in the detection area.
• When backing up toward the roadside or
a bump on the road
• When backing up toward an incline/decline
• If the rear of the vehicle is raised or low- ered due to the carried load
• If a bumper protector, such as an addi-
tional trim strip, is installed to the rear
bumper
• If the orientation of the rear camera has
been changed due to a collision or other
impact, or removal and installation
• If a towing eyelet is installed to the rear of
the vehicle
• When water is flowing over the rear cam- era lens
• When the rear camera is obscured (dirt, snow, ice, etc. are attached) or scratched
• If there is a flashing light in the detection
area, such as the emergency flashers of
another vehicle
• When tire chains or an emergency tire puncture repair kit are used.
OSituations in which the rear camera
detection function may be difficult to
notice
• The buzzer may be difficult to hear if the surrounding area is noisy, the volume of
