motor) drives the vehicle. At slow
speeds or when traveling down a
gentle slope, the engine is stopped*
and the electric motor (traction
motor) is used.
When the shift lever is in N, the
hybrid battery (traction battery) is
not being charged.
*: When the hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) requires charging or the engine
is warming up, etc., the gasoline
engine will not automatically stop.
( P. 7 6 )
■During normal driving
The gasoline engine is predomi-
nantly used. The electric motor
(traction motor) charges the hybrid
battery (traction battery) as neces-
sary.
■When accelerating sharply
When the accelerator pedal is
depressed heavily, the power of the
hybrid battery (traction battery) is
added to that of the gasoline engine
via the electric motor (traction
motor).
■When braking (regenerative
braking)
The wheels operate the electric
motor (traction motor) as a power
generator, and the hybrid battery
(traction battery) is charged.
■Regenerative braking
●In the following situations, kinetic
energy is converted to electric energy and deceleration force can be obtained in conjunction with the
recharging of the hybrid battery (trac-
tion battery). • The accelerator pedal is released while driving with the shift lever in D or
B. • The brake pedal is depressed while driving with the shift lever in D or B.
●Vehicles with GPF system: While the GPF system ( P.335) is operating to
regenerate the exhaust gas filter, the hybrid battery (traction battery) may not be recharged.
■EV indicator
The EV indicator comes on when the vehicle is driven using only the electric motor (traction motor) or the gasoline
engine is stopped.
■Conditions in which the gasoline
engine may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and stops automatically. However, it may not stop
automatically in the following conditions:
●During gasoline engine warm-up
●During hybrid battery (traction battery) charging
●When the temperature of the hybrid battery (traction battery) is high or low
●When the heater is switched on
Depending on the circumstances, the
gasoline engine may also not stop auto- matically in other situations.
■Charging the hybrid battery (trac-tion battery)
As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery (traction battery), the bat-tery does not need to be charged from
an outside source. However, if the vehi- cle is left parked for a long time the hybrid battery (traction battery) will

1-4. Hybrid system
There is an air intake vent under
the left side of the rear seat for the
purpose of cooling the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery). If the vent
becomes blocked, the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) input and out-
put may be reduced.
When a certain level of impact is
detected by the impact sensor, the
emergency shut off system blocks
the high voltage current and stops
the fuel pump to minimize the risk
of electrocution and fuel leakage. If
the emergency shut off system acti-
WARNING
When reselling or handing over your vehicle, the possibility of an accident
is extremely high because the person receiving the vehicle may not be aware of these dangers.
●If your vehicle is disposed of with-out the hybrid battery having been
removed, there is a danger of seri- ous electric shock if high voltage parts, cables and their connectors
are touched. In the event that your vehicle must be disposed of, the hybrid battery must be disposed of
by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. If the hybrid bat-
tery is not disposed of properly, it may cause electric shock that can result in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction battery) air intake vent
Do not carry large amounts of water such as water cooler bottles in the vehicle. If water spills onto the hybrid
battery (traction battery), the battery may be damaged. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

tery) air intake vent
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction battery) air intake vent
●Make sure that the air intake vent is not blocked, such as by a seat cover, plastic cover, or luggage. If
the vent is blocked, the hybrid bat- tery (traction battery) input and out-put may be restricted, possibly
leading to a malfunction.
●Clean the air intake vent regularly
to prevent the hybrid battery (trac- tion battery) from overheating.
●Do not get water or foreign materi-als in the air intake vent as this may cause a short circuit and damage
the hybrid battery (traction battery).
●A filter is installed to the air intake
vent. When the filter remains noticeably dirty even after cleaning the air intake vent, filter cleaning or
replacement is recommended. Refer to P.412 for details on how to clean the filters.

4-5. Using the driving support systems
Driving
*: If equipped
■If “Exhaust Filter Full See Owner’s
Manual” is shown on the multi- information display
●The message may be displayed while high load driving with particulate mat-ter accumulating.
●Hybrid system output (engine speed) is restricted when a certain amount of
particulate matter accumulates, how- ever, it is possible to drive the vehicle unless the malfunction indicator lamp
comes on.
●Particulate matter can accumulate
more quickly if the vehicle is fre- quently driven short trips or at low speeds, or if the hybrid system is reg-
ularly started in an extremely cold environment. Excessive accumula-tion of particulate matter can be pre-
vented by periodically driving long distances continuously with intermit-tent releasing of the accelerator pedal,
such as when driving on highways and freeways.
■If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on or “Hybrid System Mal-
function Output Power Reduced Visit Your Dealer” is shown on the multi-information display
The amount of accumulated particulate matter has exceeded a certain level. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.
GPF (Gasoline Particu-
late Filter) system*
The GPF system collects par-
ticulate matter in the exhaust
gas by using an exhaust gas
filter.
The system will operate to
regenerate the f ilter automati-
cally, depending on the vehicle
conditions.
NOTICE
■To prevent the GPF system from
not operating properly
●Do not use fuel other than the spec- ified type
●Do not modify the exhaust pipes

windshield effectively.
●If you turn “A/C” off, the windows may fog up more easily.
●The windows may fog up if the recir-culated air mode is used.
■When driving on dusty roads
Close all windows. If dust thrown up by the vehicle is still drawn into the vehicle after closing the windows, it is recom-
mended that the air intake mode be set to outside air mode and the fan speed to any setting except off.
■Outside/recirculated air mode
●Setting to the recirculated air mode temporarily is recommended in pre-
venting dirty air from entering the vehicle interior and helping to cool the vehicle when the outside air tempera-
ture is high.
●Outside/recirculated air mode may
automatically switch depending on the temperature setting or the inside tem-perature.
■Operation of the air conditioning
system in Eco drive mode
●In Eco drive mode, the air conditioning
system is controlled as follows to pri- oritize fuel efficiency:• Engine speed and compressor opera-
tion controlled to restrict heating/cool- ing capacity• Fan speed restricted when automatic
mode is selected
●To improve air conditioning perfor-
mance, perform the following opera- tions:• Adjust the fan speed
• Turn off Eco drive mode ( P.330)
●Even when the drive mode is set to
Eco drive mode, the air conditioning eco mode can be turned off by press-ing the “FAST/ECO” switch. ( P.352)
■When the outside temperature falls
to nearly 0°C (32°F)
The dehumidification function may not operate even when “A/C” switch is
pressed.
■Ventilation and air conditioning
odors
●To let fresh air in, set the air condition-
ing system to the outside air mode.
●During use, various odors from inside
and outside the vehicle may enter into and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then cause odor to
be emitted from the vents.
●To reduce potential odors from occur-
ring: • It is recommended that the air condi-tioning system be set to outside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off. • The start timing of the blower may be delayed for a short period of time
immediately after the air conditioning system is started in automatic mode.
●When parking, the system automati-cally switches to outside air mode to encourage better air circulation
throughout the vehicle, helping to reduce odors that occur when starting the vehicle.

■Customization
Some functions can be customized. ( P.498)
WARNING
■To prevent the windshield from fogging up
Do not use the windshield defogger
switch during cool air operation in extremely humid weather. The differ-ence between the temperature of the
outside air and that of the windshield can cause the outer surface of the windshield to fog up, blocking your
vision.
■When the outside rear view mir-
ror defoggers are operating
Do not touch the outside rear view mirror surfaces, as they can become
very hot and burn you.

WARNING
●Keep hands, clothing and tools away from the moving fan.
●Be careful not to touch the engine, power control unit, radiator, exhaust
manifold, etc. right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other flu-ids may also be hot.
●Do not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper and
rags, in the engine compartment.
●Do not smoke, cause sparks or
expose an open flame to fuel or 12- volt battery. Fuel and 12-volt battery fumes are flammable.
●Be extremely cautious when work-ing on the 12-volt battery. It con-
tains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.
●Take care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and dam-age painted surfaces. If fluid gets
on your hands or in your eyes, flush the affected area with clean water immediately.
If you still experience discomfort, consult a doctor.
■When working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grille
Be sure the power switch is OFF.
With the power switch in ON, the electric cooling fan may automatically start to run if the air conditioning is on
and/or the coolant temperature is high. ( P.393)
■Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc.
from getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
■If you remove the air cleaner fil- ter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear due to dirt in the air.
■If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to
go down slightly as the brake pads wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refill- ing, it may indicate a serious problem.
