accessories, be used to replace
them. Other parts or accessories of
matching quality can also be used.

affect electronic systems such as:

“PASSENGER AIR BAG” indicator
The main SRS airbag system comp onents are shown above. The SRS air-
bag system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. As the airbags
deploy, a chemical reaction in t he inflators quickly fills the airbags with non-
toxic gas to help restrain t he motion of the occupants.
■If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)
●Slight abrasions, burns, bruising etc.,
may be sustained from SRS airbags, due to the extrem ely high speed
deployment (inflation) by hot gases.
●A loud noise and white powder will be
emitted.
●Parts of the airbag module (steering
wheel hub, airbag cover and inflator)
as well as the fron t seats, parts of the front and rear pillars, and roof side
rails, may be hot for several minutes.
The airbag itself m ay also be hot.
●The windshield may crack.
●The hybrid system will be stopped and
fuel supply to t he engine will be
stopped. ( →P.98)
●All of the doors will be unlocked.

●Vehicles with Secondary Collision
Brake: The brakes and stop lights will be controlled au tomatically. (→P.439)
●The interior lights will turn on automat- ically. ( →P.466)

■SRS airbag deployment conditions
(SRS front airbags)
●The SRS front airb ags will deploy in
the event of an impact that exceeds
the set threshold level (the level of force corresponding to an approxi -
mately 20-30 km/h [12-18 mph] frontal
collision with a fixed wall that does not move or deform).
However, this threshold velocity will be
considerably higher in the following situ -
ations:
• If the vehicle strikes an object, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole,
which can move or deform on impact
• If the vehicle is involved in an under -
ride collision, such as a collision in which the front of the vehicle under -
rides, or goes under , the bed of a
truck
●Depending on the type of collision, it is
possible that only the seat belt preten - sioners will activate.
■SRS airbag deployment conditions
(SRS side and cu rtain shield air-
bags)
●The SRS side and curtain shield air -
bags will deploy in the event of an impact that exceeds the set threshold
level (the level of force corresponding
to the impact forc e produced by an approximately 1500 kg [3300 lb.] vehi -
cle colliding with the vehicle cabin
from a direction perpendicular to the vehicle orientation at an approximate
speed of 20 -30 km/h [12 -18 mph]).
●Both SRS curtain shield airbags may
also deploy in the event of a severe
frontal collision.
■Conditions under which the SRS airbags may deploy (inflate), other
than a collision
The SRS front airbags and SRS curtain shield airbags may a lso deploy if a seri-
ous impact occurs to the underside of
your vehicle. Some e xamples are shown in the illustration.
●Hitting a curb, edge of pavement or hard surface
●Falling into or jumping over a deep hole
●Landing hard or falling

WARNING
●Do not lean against the door, the
roof side rail or the front, side and
rear pillars.
●Do not allow anyone to kneel on the
passenger seat toward the door or
put their head or hands outside the vehicle.
●Do not attach anything to or lean anything against areas such as the
dashboard, steering wheel pad and
lower portion of the instrument panel.
These items can become projec -
tiles when the SRS driver, front passenger and knee airbags
deploy.
●Do not attach anything to areas such as a door, windshield, side
windows, front or rear pillar, roof
side rail and assist grip. (Except for the speed limit label →P.585)
●Do not hang coat hangers or other hard objects on th e coat hooks. All
of these items c ould become pro-
jectiles and may cause death or serious injury, should the SRS cur -
tain shield airbags deploy.
●If a vinyl cover is put on the area
where the SRS knee airbag will
deploy, be sure to remove it.
●Do not use seat a ccessories which
cover the parts wh ere the SRS side airbags inflate as they may interfere
with inflation of t he SRS airbags.
Such accessories may prevent the SRS side airbags from activating
correctly, disabl e the system or
cause the SRS side airbags to inflate accidentally, resulting in
death or serious injury.
●Do not strike or apply significant
levels of force to the area of the
SRS airbag components or the front doors.
Doing so can cause the SRS air -
bags to malfunction.
●Do not touch any of the component
parts immediately after the SRS air -
bags have deployed (inflated) as they may be hot.

■Automatic Emergency Calls
If any airbag deploys, the system is
designed to automatically call the
eCall control center.* The answer -
ing operator receives the vehicle’s
eCall*
eCall is a telematics service
that uses Global Navigation
Satellite System (GNSS) data
and embedded cellular tech -
nology to enable the following
emergency calls to be made:
Automatic emergency calls
(Automatic Collision Notifica -
tion) and manual emergency
calls (by pressing the “SOS”
button). This service is
required by European Union
Regulations.

location, the time of the incident
and the vehicle V IN, and attempts
to speak with the vehicle occupants
to assess the situation. If the occu -
pants are unable to communicate,
the operator automatically treats
the call as an emergency and con -
tacts the nearest emergency ser -
vices provider (1 12 system etc.) to
describe the situation and request
that assistance be sent to the loca-
tion.
*: In some cases, the call cannot be

■Manual Emergency Calls
In the event of an emergency,
press the “SOS” button to call the
eCall control center.* The answer -
ing operator will determine your
vehicle’s location, assess the situa -
tion, and dispatch the necessary
assistance required.
Make sure to open the cover before
pressing the “SOS” button.
If you accidentally p ress the “SOS” but-
ton, tell the operator that you are not
experiencing an emergency.
*: In some cases, the call cannot be
made. ( →P.67)
When the power switch is turned to
ON, the red indicator light will illumi -
nate for 10 seconds. Then, the
green indicator ligh t will illuminate
for 2 seconds and remain illumi -
nated if the system is functioning
properly.
The indicator lights indicate the fol -
lowing:
If the green indicator light illumi-
nates and stays on, the system
is enabled.
If the green indicator light flashes
twice per second, an automatic
or manual Emergency Call is
being made.
If the red indicator light illumi-
nates at any time other than
immediately after the power
switch is turned to ON, the sys -
tem may be malfunctioning or
the backup battery may be
depleted.
If the red indicator light blinks for
approximately 30 seconds during
an Emergency Call, the call has
been disconnected or the cellular
network signal is weak.
The service life of t he backup battery
does not exceed 3 years.

●Ice or snow is removed from the vehi-
cle, causing the vehicle to receive repeated impacts or vibrations.
●The vehicle is insid e an automatic or high-pressure car wash.
●The vehicle experiences impacts, such as hail, lightning strikes, and
other kinds of rep eated impacts or
vibrations.
■Tilt sensor detection consider - ations
The sensor may trigge r the alarm in the
following situations:
●The vehicle is transported by a ferry,
trailer, train, etc.
●The vehicle is par ked in a parking
garage.
●The vehicle is insid e a car wash that
moves the vehicle.
●Any of the tires loses air pressure.
●The vehicle is jacked up.
●An earthquake occurs or the road caves in.
NOTICE
■To ensure the intrusion sensor
functions correctly
●To ensure that the sensors operate properly, do not touch or cover
them.
●Do not spray air fresheners or other products directly into the sensor
holes.
●Installing accessories other than
genuine Toyota parts or leaving
objects between the driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat may
reduce the detection performance.
●The intrusion se nsor may be can-
celed when the ele ctronic key is
near the vehicle.
982-1. Plug-in hybrid system
There is an air intake vent under
the rear seat for cooling the DC/DC
converter.
Blocking the air intake vent may
prevent the plug-in hybrid system
from operating properly.
When a certain level of impact is
detected by the im pact sensor, the
emergency shut off system blocks
off the high voltage current and

■Notice about fuel
●For plug-in hybrid vehicles, fuel
may remain in the tank for a long time and undergo changes in qual -
ity depending on the how the vehi -
cle is used. Refuel at least 20 L (5.3 gal., 4.4 Imp.gal. ) of fuel every 12
months (refuel a tot al of at least 20
L [5.3 gal., 4.4 Imp.gal.] over a 12-
month period), as this may affect components of the fuel system or
the gasoline engine.
●If the vehicle has not been refueled
for a certain amount of time and it is
possible that the quality of the fuel remaining in the tank has changed,
“No New Fuel has been Added
Recently Please refuel” is displayed on the multi-information display
when the power switch is turned to
ON. If the message is displayed, refuel the vehicle immediately.

■DC/DC converter air intake vent
●Make sure not to block the air
intake vent with anything, such as a seat cover, plastic cover, or lug -
gage. Blocking the air intake vent
may prevent the plug-in hybrid sys - tem from operating properly.
●When dust etc. has accumulated in
the air intake ven t, clean it with a vacuum cleaner to prevent the vent
from clogging.
●Do not wet or a llow foreign sub-
stances to enter the air vent as this
may cause a shor t circuit and dam- age the DC/DC converter.
●Do not carry large amounts of water such as water cooler bottles in the
vehicle. If water spills onto the
DC/DC converter, the converter may be damaged. Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
●A filter is installed to the air intake vent. When the filter remains
noticeably dirty even after cleaning
the air intake vent, filter cleaning or replacement is recommended.
When cleaning the filter, refer to
P.536.
●If “Maintenance required for DCDC
converter cooling parts See Owner’s Manual” is shown on the
multi-information display, the air
intake vent and filter may be clogged. Refer to P.536 for informa -
tion on how to clean the air intake
vent.

2-1. Plug-in hybrid system
Plug-in hybrid system
■When starting off, depress the
accelerator pedal smoothly to
accelerate
As a guide, acce lerate up to
approximately 20 km/h (12mph) in
the first 5 seconds.
Electrical and fuel efficiency can be
improved just by using the ECO
Accelerator Guidance displayed on
the multi-informat ion display and
taking care to start off gently.

When the driving mode is set to Eco
drive mode, depressing the accelerator
pedal generates smooth torque that
makes it easier to operate the accelera -
tor gently.
■Maintain sufficient vehicle-to-
vehicle distance and do not
accelerate or decelerate
unnecessarily
Try to maintain a fixed speed while
driving. Driving at a short vehicle-
to-vehicle distance will result in
repeating wasteful acceleration and
deceleration, which will worsen the
electrical and fuel efficiency.
■Release the accelerator pedal
early before stopping the vehi -
cle, such as at a traffic light
The regenerative brake will operate
to convert the kinetic energy of the
vehicle into electrical energy, which
will charge the hyb rid battery (trac-
tion battery).
The regeneration status can be
checked from the Hybrid System
Indicator. ( →P.177)
When the brake pedal is depressed
lightly during deceleration, the
regeneration amount increases,
enabling more electrical energy to
be recovered.
If the brake pedal is depressed too
strongly, the recovered amount indica -
tor will reach the maximum level and
the upper limit of the recoverable
energy will be exceeded. Therefore, be
sure to operate the brake pedal early.
■Use the air co nditioning sys-
tem appropriately, and also
utilize the heated steering
wheel (if equipped) and seat
heaters
In EV mode, the vehicle is cooled
and heated by electrical energy.
(Except in extremely cold tempera -
tures of approximately -10°C (14°F)
or less.)
Preventing excessive cooling or
heating of the vehicle will reduce
power consumption and improve
electrical efficiency.
The heated steering wheel (if
equipped) and seat heaters are effi -
cient heating device that directly
warm the body using less electric
power.
When used together with the air condi -
tioning system, a low temperature set-
ting can be used to improve electrical
and fuel efficiency.
■Check the tire pressure
If the tire pressure is lower than the
specified value, i t will worsen the
electrical and fuel efficiency.
