e Speed Limit Assist
If a change in the speed limit of 20 km/h or more
is de tected and automatic adoption of speed lim-
its is activated, the new speed limit is automati-
cally adop ted as the stored speed (/ page 229).
The driven speed is adjusted when theve hicle is
le ve l with the tra1c sign at the latest. In the case
of signs indicating entry into an urban area, the
speed is adap ted according tothe speed permit-
te d within the urban area. The speed limit display
in the Instrument Display is alw ays updated when
th eve hicle is le vel with the tra1c sign.
If th ere is no speed restriction on an unlimited
str etch ofroad (e.g. on a mo torw ay),th ere com-
mended speed is automatical lyadop ted as the
stored speed. The system uses the speed stored
on an unlimited str etch ofroad as there commen-
ded speed. If you do not alter the stored speed on
an unlimited str etch ofroad, there commended
speed is 130 km/h.
If Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode bypressing the accelerator
pedal, only speed limits which are higher than the
set speed are adop ted. Obser
vethe no tes on driving systems and your
re sponsibility; you may otherwise failto recognise
dangers (/ page 199).

The system limits of Tra1c Sign Assist apply to
th e de tection of tra1c signs (/ page 228).
Speed limits below 20 km/h are not automatical ly
adop tedby the system as the stored speed. Tem-
porary speed restrictions (e.g. for a cer tain time
or due towe ather conditions) cann otbe proper ly
de tected bythe system. The maximum permissi-
ble speed applying toave hicle with a trailer is not
de tected bythe system.

When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is acti va-
te d, theve hicle speed will be adap ted accordingly
to thero ute events ahead. Depending on the drive
prog ram selected, theve hicle neg otiates a route
ev ent ahead in an economical, comfor table or
dynamic manner. When thero ute event has been
passed, theve hicle accelerates again tothe
stored speed. The set distance totheve hicle in
front, vehicles de tected ahead and speed restric-
tions ahead are take n into account.
Yo u can activate and deactivate route-based
speed adap tation in the multimedia system
(/ page 217).

Also, the speed is reduced if the turn signal indi-
cator tochange lanes is switched on and one of
th efo llowing situations is de tected:
R Turning o. at junctions
R Driving on slowing-down lanes
R Driving on lanes adjacent toslowing-down
lanes
The driver is responsible forch oosing theright
speed and observing other road users. This
applies in particular tojunctions, roundabouts and
tra1c lights, as route-based speed adap tation
does not brake theve hicle toa standstill.
When route guidance is active, the /rst speed
adjustment is car ried out automaticall y.Ifth e turn
signal indicator is switched on, the selected route is con/rmed and fur
ther speed adjustment is acti-
va ted.
Speed adap tation is cancelled in thefo llowing
cases:
R Ifth e turn signal indicator is switched o.

brake pedal during the process.

Ro ute-based speed adap tation does not take right
of wa yre gulations into account. The driver is
re sponsible for complying with road tra1c regula-
tions and driving at a suitable speed.
The speed ada ptation made bythe system may

R varying maximum permissible speeds in indi-
vidual lanes, forex ample at toll stations

DSR is an aid toassist you when driving downhill.
It ke eps the speed of tr avel at the selected target
speed. The steeper the downhill gradient, the
gr eater the DSR braking e.ect on theve hicle. On
0at st retches of road and uphill gradients, the
DSR brakes theve hicle minimally or not at all.
When DSR is activated and the transmission is in
position h,kori, DSR controls the driving
speed. The targetspeed can be set toava lue
between 2 km/h and 18 km/h. By braking or accelerating,
you can drive at a higher or lo wer
speed than thetarg etspeed at any time.
DSR is deacti vated automatically if you drive at
speeds greater than 45 km/h or select drive pro-
gr am C. The îoffmessage then appears
in the multifunction displa y.The status indicator in
th e multifunction display disappears. You also
hear a warning tone.

Take into account thero ad sur face and
th e di.erence between the driving speed
and targetspeed before activating DSR. Obser
vethe no tes on driving systems and your
re sponsibility; you may otherwise failto recognise
dangers (/ page 199).
Yo u are alw aysre sponsible forke eping control of
th eve hicle and for assessing whe ther the downhill gr
adient can be neg otiated. Depending on road
sur face and tyres, DSR may not alw ays be able to
ke ep tothetarg etspeed. Select a targetspeed
suitable forth e environmental conditions and also
apply the brakes yourself if requ ired.

Ac tive Steering Assist is only available up to a
speed of 210 km/h. The system helps youto stay
in the centre of the lane bymeans of moderate
steering inter ventions. Depending on the speed
driven, Active Steering Assist uses theve hicles
ahead and lane markings as a refere nce.
% Depending on the countr y,in the lo wer speed
ra nge Active Steering Assist can use the sur-
ro unding tra1c as a refere nce. If necessar y,
Ac tive Steering Assist can then also pr ovide
assistance when driving outside the centre of
th e lane, forex ample, toform are scue lane.
If th e de tection of lane markings and vehicles
ahead is impaired, Active Steering Assist switches
to passive mode. The system pr ovides no support
in this case.

The driver is requ ired tokeep their hands on the
stee ring wheel at all times and be able tointer-
ve ne at any time tocor rect the course of theve hi-
cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a
ch ange from active topassive mode or vice versa

steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, display 1appears. If the driver still does
not steer theve hicle, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.

considerable period, the system can initiate an
emer gency stop (/ page 221).
The warning is not issued or is stopped when the
driver gives con/ rmation tothe system:

Ac tive Steering Assist has a limited steering tor-
qu efo r lateral guidance. In some cases, the steer-
ing inter vention is not su1cient tokeep theve hi-
cle in the lane or todrive thro ugh exits.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing instances:
R There is poor visibility, e.g. due tosno w,rain,
fo g, heavy spr ay,gr eatly varying light condi-
tions or strong shadow s onthe car riag ewa y.
R There is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
di re ct sunlight or re0ections.
R Insu1cient road illumination. R
The windscreen is dirty, mis ted up, damaged
or co vered in the vicinity of the camera, e.g.
by a stic ker.
R No, or se veral, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
qu ickl y,forex ample, in a construction area or
junctions.
R The lane markings are wornawa y,dark or co v-
ered up, e.g. bydirt or sno w.
R Ifth e distance totheve hicle in front is too
short and thus the lane markings cannot be
de tected.
R The road is nar row and winding.
R There are obs tacles on the lane or projecting
out into the lane, such as object mar kers.
The system does not pr ovide assistance in thefo l-
lowing conditions:
R On tight bends and when turning.
R When crossing junctions.
R Atroundabouts or toll stations.
R When towing a trailer.

ing brake.
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is ended.
R The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz eme rgency call centre.
The driver can cancel the deceleration at any time
by per form ing one of thefo llowing actions:
