Retractable hitch
*
The retractable hitch is designed to be used to tow a trailer or mount a bicycle holder. Thehitch can be easily retracted or extended asneeded. When retracted, the hitch is com-pletely concealed.
Folding out the hitch1.
Open the tailgate. There is a button for operating the hitch on the right-hand sideat the rear of the cargo compartment.Steady orange illumination from the indi-cator light in the button shows that thefolding function is active. 2. Press the button and release – pressing
too long on the button may prevent thehitch from folding out.
> The hitch will fold out and down to anunlocked position – the indicator lamp will flash orange. The hitch is ready tobe moved to the locked position.
3.
Move the hitch to its end position, where it will lock in place – the indicator lamp willglow steadily orange.
> The hitch is now ready for use.

Retracting the hitch1. Open the tailgate. Press the button on therear, right-hand side of the cargo compart- ment and release. Pressing too long onthe button may prevent the hitch fromfolding in.
> The hitch will automatically fold downto the unlocked position and the indica- tor light in the button will flash orange. 2.
Secure the hitch into position by pushing it back to its retracted position under thebumper, where it will lock into place.
> The indicator light in the button will
now glow steadily if the hitch is cor- rectly locked in the retracted position.
CAUTION
Make sure that there is no adapter in the electrical socket or removable ball sectionmounted when the towbar is folded in. Remove the bicycle holder from the towbar when it is not being used.
Hitch-mounted bicycle holder
NOTE
The weight limits for trailers and towbar- mounted accessories differ. A separatelimit applies for each. This towbar is onlydesigned for towbar-mounted bicycle hold-ers. All other accessories are not suitable.
Before mounting the bicycle on the bicycle holder, keep in mind that:
The maximum weight for the bicycleholder including bicycles is 130 lbs/60 kg.For example: holder 40 lbs + bicycle 30lbs + bicycle 30 lbs = 100 lbs total > OK
Do not mount more than two bicycles
The center of gravity should not exceed thedimensions:
1. 613 mm (24 1/7 ")
2. 642 mm (25 2/7 ")

3. Disconnect the device by pulling out the
plug (do not pull on the cord). Pull up the cover when the outlet is not in use or is left unattended.
CAUTION
The maximum power is 150 W.
WARNING
Do not attempt to alter or repair the high- voltage outlet on your own. Volvo recom-mends contacting an authorized Volvoworkshop.
WARNING
Only use accessories that are not dam- aged or malfunctioning. The accesso-ries must be CE marked, UL marked orhave an equivalent safety marking.
Accessories must be designed for 120V and 60 Hz, with plugs intended forthe outlet.
New let outlets, plugs or accessoriescome into contact with water oranother fluid. Do not touch or use theoutlet if it appears damaged or hasbeen in contact with water or anotherfluid.
Do not connect power strips, adaptersor extension cords to the outlet hasthis could cause the outlet's safetyfunctions to malfunction.
The outlet is equipped with a petguard. Make sure that no one picks ator damages the outlet in such a waythat the guard is disabled. Childrenshould not be left unsupervised in thevehicle when the outlet is active.
Failure to follow the above could lead to severe or fatal electrical shocks.

Using the glove compartment
The glove compartment is located on the pas- senger side. The glove compartment can beused to store the Owner's Manual, maps, etc.There is also room for a pen and a cardholder.
The glove compartment is opened by pressing the opening button in the center console.
Locking and unlocking the glove boxThe glove compartment can be locked ("pri-vate locking") when the vehicle is left at aworkshop, hotel, etc. When private locking isactivated, the tailgate is also locked.
Using the glove box as a cooled areaThe glove compartment can be used to coole.g. drinks or food. Cooling is possible whenthe climate system is active (i.e. when the

586 rear end. Press and hold the relevant button until the desired height is reached. The rear end of the vehicle cannot be raised higher than its normal height. The rear end will return to the normal height when the vehicle begins driving.
NOTE
It is not possible to adjust the height of the vehicle's rear when one or more of thedoors or the hood is open. This does notapply to the tailgate.
WARNING
Make sure that no people, animals or objects are found under the vehicle when itis lowered. This could endanger life andcause damage to the vehicle or objects.

Roof loads and load carriers
Volvo-developed load carriers are recom- mended for carrying loads on the roof of thevehicle.
Volvo load carriers are specially designed to help prevent damage to your vehicle and helpensure maximum safety while driving. Volvoload carriers are available from authorizedVolvo retailers. Carefully follow the installation instructions provided with the load carriers. Distribute the load evenly throughout the load carriers. Place heavier cargo at thebottom of the load.
Check periodically to ensure that the loadcarriers and load are properly secured.Secure the load firmly using tie straps orsimilar.
If the load is longer than the vehicle, suchas a canoe or kayak, attach the towingeyelet in its front outlet and secure the tiestraps in it.
The vehicle's wind resistance and fuelconsumption increase with the size of theload.
Drive smoothly. Avoid rapid acceleration,hard braking and fast cornering.
WARNING
The vehicle's center of gravity and driving characteristics are altered by roof loads. Follow the vehicle's specifications regar- ding weights and maximum permittedload.

Installing and removing the steel cargo grid*
The steel cargo grid prevents loads or pets in the cargo compartment from being thrownforward into the passenger compartmentduring hard braking.
For safety reasons, the steel grid must always be installed and secured correctly.
WARNING
Under no circumstances may a person be in the cargo compartment when the vehi-cle is moving. Heavy braking or a collisioncould lead to serious injury.
The steel grid consists of the grid itself and two separate mounting brackets. Each of the mounting brackets has a screw cover and twoplastic sleeves for the grid.
WARNING
The steel cargo grid may only be used in the rear position described here. The ceil-ing attachment points behind the frontseats are not intended to anchor the steelgrid.
WARNING
For safety reasons, the third-row seats

must be folded down when the steel cargo grid is mounted in the vehicle.
CAUTION
The steel cargo grid and the cargo com- partment cover cannot be mounted at thesame time.
Installation1. Fold down the rear seats and lift in the steel grid through one of the rear doors or the tailgate. The curved (convex) side ofthe grid should face toward the cargocompartment and the hooks on each sideof the grid should face upward. Themounting brackets and plastic sleeves arenot needed in this step. 2.
Press one of the grid's hooks into the larger hole in the ceiling attachment point(1). Grasp the grid near the hook and pull/push it into the smaller hole (2).
> The hook is now secured in the attach-
ment point.
3. Repeat step 2 above to secure the other hook in the attachment point on the oppo- site side.
WARNING
Make sure the cargo grid's hooks are securely attached in the ceiling attachmentpoints to help ensure the grid does notcome loose.

Automatic car washes
The vehicle should be washed as soon as it becomes dirty. The longer the dirt remains,the more difficult it will be to keep the vehicleclean. It could also lead to paint damage.
Washing your vehicle in an automatic car wash is a fast and easy way to keep your vehi-cle clean, but it does not reach all areas of thevehicle. Volvo recommends washing yourvehicle by hand or supplementing automaticcar washes with a hand wash.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not washing the vehi- cle in an automatic car wash during thefirst few months; the paintwork on newvehicles takes some time to fully harden.
CAUTION
Before driving the vehicle into a car wash, deactivate the Automatic Braking whenStationary and Automatic Parking BrakeApplication functions. If the functions arenot deactivated, the brake system willseize when the vehicle is stationary and thevehicle will not be able to roll.
CAUTION
For automatic car washes in which the vehicle is pulled forward on rolling wheels:
1. Before washing the vehicle, make sure that the automatic rain sensor is deac- tivated. If it is not deactivated andinadvertently starts, the wiper armscould be damaged.
2. To help prevent damage from the auto- matic car wash machinery, make surethat the door mirrors are folded in,antennas retracted or removed, andany auxiliary lights secured.
3. Drive into the automatic car wash.
4. Turn off the "Automatic Braking when Stationary" function using the
but-
ton in the tunnel console.
5. Turn off the "Automatic Parking Brake Application" function in the center dis- play's Top view.
6. Turn off the engine by turning the start knob in the tunnel console clockwise.Hold the knob in position for at least2 seconds.
The vehicle is now ready for the automaticcar wash.
CAUTION
The system will automatically change to P
mode if the above steps are not followed. In P mode, the wheels are locked, which
they should not be when the vehicle isbeing washed in a car wash.
NOTE
Keep in mind that if the vehicle is equipped with the keyless locking and unlocking function *, the doors and tailgate/trunk lid
may open when washing the vehicle if the remote key is within range.
