8-2. Steps to take in an emergency
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
your Toyota dealer or commercial towing service before towing.
● A warning message for the hybrid system is shown on the multi-
information display and the vehicle does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If your vehicle needs to be towed
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by your Toyota dealer o r commercial towing service,
using a wheel-lift type t ruck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.

●Fluid leaks un der the vehicle
(Water dripping from the air conditioning a fter use is normal.)
● Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
● is shown on the multi-information display
● Changes in exhaust sound
● Excessive tire squeal when cornering
● Strange noises related to the suspension system
● Pinging or other noises related to the hybrid system
● Engine missing, stumb ling or running roughly
● Appreciable loss of power
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one s ide when driving on a level road
● Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touch es
the floor
If you think something is wrong
If you notice any of the followi ng symptoms, your vehicle proba -
bly needs adjustment or repair. Contact your Toyota dealer as
soon as possible.

ture Alert) system

 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer.
Indicates a malfunction in the PCS (Pre-Collision
System)
A buzzer also sounds.
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer.

When trouble arises
PRIUS c_UIndicates that the hybrid system has overheated
This message may be displayed when driving
under severe operating conditions. (For exam-
ple, when driving up a long steep hill.)
A buzzer also sounds.
 Stop and check. ( P. 529)
Indicates that the Automatic High Beam switch is
pressed while the headlights are in low beam.
Turn the high beam on.
Indicates that, since the VSC (Vehicle Stability
Control) system was turned off, the pre-collision
braking and pre-collision brake assist are dis-
abled (The pre-collision warning function will be
operational)
 Turn the VSC on. ( P. 240, 267)
Indicates that the pre-collision system is disabled.
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer.
Indicates that the hybrid battery (traction battery)
is low A buzzer also sounds.
 When stopping the vehicle for a long
period of time, shift the shift lever to P. The
hybrid battery (traction battery) cannot be
charged with the shift position in N.

able

The reason the EV drive mode is not available
(the vehicle is idling, battery charge is low,
speed is higher than the EV drive mode operat-
ing speed range, accelerator pedal is
depressed too much) may be displayed.
A buzzer also sounds.
 Use the EV drive mode when it becomes
available.

After taking the specified steps to correct the suspected probl em,
check that the warning m essage and light go off.

duct.
 If the air intake vent is dirty, refer to P. 404

intake vent is not dirty, have the vehicle
inspected at your Toyota dealer.
