4. R aise the vehicle by turning the jack screw

lockwise with the jack handle. Raise the
vehicle until the tire just clears the road
surface and enough clearance is obtained
to install the spare tire. Minimum tire lift
provides maximum stability.
5. R emove the wheel nuts. If equipped with

heel covers, remove the wheel cover from
the wheel by hand. Do not pry the wheel
cover off. Then, pull the wheel off the hub. 6. M
ount the spare tire.

ounting Spare Tire
WARNING!
Raising the vehicle higher than necessary can
make the vehicle less stable. It could slip off
the jack and hurt someone near it. Raise the
vehicle only enough to remove the tire.
WARNING!
To avoid possible personal injury, handle the
wheel covers with care to avoid contact with
any sharp edges.
CAUTION!
Be sure to mount the spare tire with the valve
stem facing outward. The vehicle could be
damaged if the spare tire is mounted
incorrectly.

NOTE:
For vehicles so equipped, do not attempt to
install a center cap or wheel cover on the
compact spare.

“Limited Use Spare” under “Tires” in
“Servicing And Maintenance” for additional
warnings, cautions, and information about
the spare tire, its use, and operation.
7. I nstall the wheel nuts with the cone-shaped
e
nd of the nut toward the wheel. Lightly
tighten the wheel nuts.
8. Lo wer the vehicle by turning the jack screw
c
ounterclockwise with the jack handle.
9. F
inish tightening the lug nuts. Push down on
t
he wrench while at the end of the handle for
increased leverage. Tighten the lug nuts in
a star pattern until each nut has been
t i
ghtened twice. For the correct lug nut
torque, refer to “Wheel And Tire Torque
Specifications” in “Technical Specifications”.
If in doubt about the correct tightness, have
them checked with a torque wrench by an
authorized dealer or service station.
10. Lo wer the jack to its fully closed position.

1. P lace the deflated (flat) tire in the cargo

rea. Do not stow the deflated tire in the
spare tire stowage location. Have the
deflated (flat) tire repaired or replaced as
soon as possible.
12. T o stow the winch cable and retainer, fit the
a
ssembled jack-handle over the winch drive
nut. Rotate the jack-handle assembly clockwise
until you hear the winch mechanism click three
times. It cannot be over tightened.

13. S tow the jack-handle and jack. Remove the
w
heel blocks from the vehicle and release
the park brake.
14. C heck the tire pressure as soon as possible.

ROAD TIRE INSTALLATION
Vehicles Equipped With Wheel Covers
1. Mount the road tire on the axle.
2. T o ease the installation process for steel
w
heels with wheel covers, install two lug nuts
on the mounting studs which are on each
side of the valve stem. Install the lug nuts
with the cone shaped end of the nut toward
the wheel. Lightly tighten the lug nuts. Tire And Wheel Cover Or Center Cap
3. A lign the valve notch in the wheel cover with

he valve stem on the wheel. Install the
cover by hand, snapping the cover over the
two lug nuts. Do not use a hammer or
excessive force to install the cover.
4. I nstall the remaining lug nuts with the cone

haped end of the nut toward the wheel.
Lightly tighten the lug nuts. 5. Lo
wer the vehicle to the ground by turning

he jack handle counterclockwise.
6. F inish tightening the lug nuts. Push down on

he wrench while at the end of the handle for
increased leverage. Tighten the lug nuts
in a star pattern until each nut has been

ghtened twice. For the correct lug nut

Specifications” in “Technical Specifications”.

SPARE TIRE STOWAGE
NOTE:
Refer to “Spare Tire Location And Removal” in

is section, for information on assembling the
winch tools.
1. P lace the spare tire near the winch cable.
H
old the spare upright so that the tire's
tread is on the ground and the valve stem
is at the top of the wheel facing away from
the rear of the vehicle.
2. T ilt the retainer at the end of the winch
c
able and drop it through the center of the
wheel. Then place the spare tire with the
cable and retainer underneath the vehicle.
3. Fit the assembled jack-handle over the winch d
rive nut. Rotate the jack-handle assembly
clockwise to raise the spare tire into the storage
area. Continue to rotate the jack-handle
assembly until you hear the winch mechanism
click three times. It cannot be over tightened.
Push against the tire several times to be sure it
is held securely in place.
JUMP STARTING
If your vehicle has a discharged battery, it can
be jump started using a set of jumper cables
and a battery in another vehicle, or by using a
portable battery booster pack. Jump starting
can be dangerous if done improperly, so please
follow the procedures in this section carefully.
NOTE:
When using a portable battery booster pack,

llow the manufacturer's operating instruc -
tions and precautions.
WARNING!
To avoid the risk of forcing the vehicle off the
jack, do not tighten the wheel nuts fully until
the vehicle has been lowered. Failure to follow
this warning may result in serious injury.
WARNING!
Do not attempt jump starting if the battery is
frozen. It could rupture or explode and cause
personal injury.
CAUTION!
Do not use a portable battery booster pack or
any other booster source with a system
voltage greater than 12 Volts or damage to
the battery, starter motor, alternator or
electrical system may occur.

PREPARATIONS FOR JUMP START
The battery in your vehicle is located between
the left front headlight assembly and the left
front wheel splash shield. To allow jump
starting, there are remote battery posts located
on the left side of the engine compartment.

upward on the cover.
4. If using another vehicle to jump start the b
attery, park the vehicle within the jumper
cable’s reach, apply the parking brake and
make sure the ignition is OFF.

WARNING!
Take care to avoid the radiator cooling fan
whenever the hood is raised. It can start
anytime the ignition switch is ON. You can
be injured by moving fan blades.
Remove any metal jewelry such as rings,
watch bands and bracelets that could
make an inadvertent electrical contact.
You could be seriously injured.
Batteries contain sulfuric acid that can
burn your skin or eyes and generate
hydrogen gas which is flammable and
explosive. Keep open flames or sparks
away from the battery.

JUMP STARTING PROCEDURE
Connecting The Jumper Cables
1. C onnect the positive
(
+) end of the jumper
cable to the remote positive (+)
post of the
discharged vehicle.
2. C onnect the opposite end of the positive (
+)
jumper cable to the positive (+) post of the
booster battery.
3. C onnect the negative end (
-) of the jumper
cable to the negative (-) post of the booster
battery.
4. C onnect the opposite end of the negative (
-)
jumper cable to a good engine ground.
A “ground” is an exposed metallic/
u n
painted part of the engine, frame or
chassis, such as an accessory bracket or
large bolt. The ground must be away from
the battery and fuel injection system. 5. S
tart the engine in the vehicle that has the
b
ooster battery, let the engine idle a few
minutes, and then start the engine in the
vehicle with the discharged battery.
6. Once the engine is started, follow the d
isconnecting procedure below.
WARNING!
Do not allow vehicles to touch each other as
this could establish a ground connection and
personal injury could result.
WARNING!
Failure to follow this jump starting procedure
could result in personal injury or property
damage due to battery explosion.
CAUTION!
Failure to follow these procedures could
result in damage to the charging system of
the booster vehicle or the discharged vehicle.
WARNING!
Do not connect the jumper cable to the
negative (-) post of the discharged battery.
The resulting electrical spark could cause
the battery to explode and could result in
p e
rsonal injury.

Disconnecting The Jumper Cables
1. D isconnect the negative

from the remote negative (-)
post of the
vehicle with the discharged battery.
2. D isconnect the negative end (
-) of the
jumper cable from the negative (-) post of
the booster battery.
3. D isconnect the opposite end of the

ositive (+)
jumper cable from the
positive (+)
post of the booster battery.
4. D isconnect the positive (
+) end of the
jumper cable from the remote positive (+)
post of the discharged vehicle.
5. R einstall the protective cover over the
r
emote positive (+) battery post of the
discharged vehicle.
If frequent jump starting is required to start
your vehicle, you should have the battery and
c h
arging system inspected at an authorized
dealer.
IF YOUR ENGINE OVERHEATS
In any of the following situations, you can
reduce the potential for overheating by taking
the appropriate action.
On the highways — slow down.
In city traffic — while stopped, place the trans -
mission in NEUTRAL, but do not increase the
e n
gine idle speed while preventing vehicle
motion with the brakes. NOTE:
There are steps that you can take to slow down
an
impending overheat condition:
If your Air Conditioner (A/C) is on, turn it off.
The A/C system adds heat to the engine
cooling system and turning the A/C off can
help remove this heat.
You can also turn the temperature control to
maximum heat, the mode control to floor and
the blower control to high. This allows the
heater core to act as a supplement to the
radiator and aids in removing heat from the
engine cooling system.
CAUTION!
Accessories plugged into the vehicle power
outlets draw power from the vehicle’s battery,
even when not in use (i.e., cellular devices,
etc.). Eventually, if plugged in long enough
without engine operation, the vehicle’s battery
will discharge sufficiently to degrade battery
life and/or prevent the engine from starting.
WARNING!
You or others can be badly burned by hot
engine coolant (antifreeze) or steam from
your radiator. If you see or hear steam coming
from under the hood, do not open the hood
until the radiator has had time to cool. Never
try to open a cooling system pressure cap
when the radiator or coolant bottle is hot.

FREEING A STUCK VEHICLE
If your vehicle becomes stuck in mud, sand, or
snow, it can often be moved using a rocking motion.
Turn the steering wheel right and left to clear the
area around the front wheels. Then, shift back and
forth between DRIVE (D) and REVERSE (R) while
gently pressing the accelerator. Use the least
amount of accelerator pedal pressure that will
maintain the rocking motion, without spinning the
wheels or racing the engine.
Push the ESC OFF switch, to place the
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
s
y
stem in "ESC Partial Off" mode,
before rocking the vehicle. Refer to
“Electronic Brake Control System” in “Safety”
for further information. Once the vehicle has
been freed, push the ESC OFF switch again to
restore "ESC On" mode.
CAUTION!
Racing the engine or spinning the wheels may
lead to transmission overheating and failure.
Allow the engine to idle with the transmission
in NEUTRAL for at least one minute after
every five rocking-motion cycles. This will
minimize overheating and reduce the risk of
transmission failure during prolonged efforts
to free a stuck vehicle.
WARNING!
Fast spinning tires can be dangerous. Forces
generated by excessive wheel speeds may
cause damage, or even failure, of the axle
and tires. A tire could explode and injure
someone. Do not spin your vehicle's wheels
faster than 30
mph (48 km/h) or for longer
t h
an 30 seconds continuously without
stopping when you are stuck and do not let
anyone near a spinning wheel, no matter
what the speed.
CAUTION!
When “rocking” a stuck vehicle by shifting
between DRIVE and REVERSE, do not spin
the wheels faster than 15 mph (24 km/h),

drivetrain damage may result.
Revving the engine or spinning the wheels
too fast may lead to transmission over -
heating and failure. It can also damage the
