General information about TwinEngine
Twin Engine vehicles are driven just like anyother vehicle, but certain functions differ from avehicle powered exclusively by gasoline. Theelectric motor powers the vehicle primarily at lowspeeds; the gasoline engine is used at higherspeeds or during more active driving.
The instrument panel displays Twin Engine-spe-cific information - charging information, selecteddrive mode, distance to discharged battery andhybrid battery charge level.
Different drive modes can be selected while driv-ing, e.g. electric power only or, if more power isneeded, a combination of electric and gasolinepower. The vehicle calculates the optimal combi-nation of driveability, driving experience, environ-mental impact and fuel economy for the selecteddrive mode.
In order to function optimally, the hybrid battery(and its electrical drive systems) and the gasolineengine (and its drive systems) must be at thecorrect operating temperature. Battery capacitycan be considerably reduced if the battery is toocold or too hot. Preconditioning prepares thevehicle's drive systems and passenger compart-ment before driving to help reduce both wear andenergy consumption. It also helps increase thehybrid battery's range.
The hybrid battery which powers the electricmotor is recharged using the charging cable. It
can also be recharged during light braking andthrough engine braking in gear position B. Thecombustion engine can also help recharge thehybrid battery.
Important
No electrical current
Keep in mind that if there is no electrical currentto the vehicle, i.e. the ignition is switched off orthe start battery is discharged, certain functionssuch as brakes, power steering, etc. will not work.
WARNING
If the vehicle does not have electrical currentand both the electric motor and the gasolineengine are switched off, the brakes cannot beused to stop the vehicle.
Towing not permitted
Never tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind anothervehicle, as this could damage the electric motor.
Exterior engine noise
WARNING
Please be aware that there is no sound fromthe engine when the vehicle is being poweredby the electric motor and it may be difficult todetect by children, pedestrians, cyclists andanimals. This is especially true at low speeds.
High-voltage electrical current
WARNING
A number of electrical components in TwinEngine Plug-in Hybrid vehicles use high-volt-age current and can be extremely dangerousif handled incorrectly. These components andany orange wiring in the vehicle may only behandled by trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnicians.

Charging the hybrid battery
In addition to the conventional fuel tank, yourvehicle is also equipped with a rechargeablelithium-ion hybrid battery.

The hybrid battery can be recharged using thecharging cable stored in a storage space in thecargo compartment.
WARNING
The hybrid electrical system in your vehicleuses high voltage electrical current. Any dam-age to this system or to the hybrid batterymay result in the danger of overheating, fire,or serious injury. If the vehicle is involved in acollision or subjected to flooding, fire, etc.,have it inspected by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician. Prior to this inspec-tion, the vehicle should be parked outdoors ata safe distance from any building or poten-tially flammable materials.
The hybrid battery's charging time depends onthe charging current used.
NOTE
The capacity of the hybrid battery diminishessomewhat with age and use, which couldresult in increased use of the gasoline engineand consequently, slightly higher fuel con-sumption.
WARNING
If the hybrid battery needs to be replaced, thismay only be done by a Volvo retailer orauthorized Volvo workshop.

Available drive modes
WARNING
Keep in mind that the vehicle does not emitany engine noise when using the electricmotor and may therefore be difficult to detectfor children, pedestrians, cyclists or animals.This is particularly true at low speeds, e.g. inparking lots.
WARNING
Do not leave the vehicle in an unventilatedarea with a drive mode activated and the com-bustion engine switched off. The engine willstart automatically if the charge level in thehybrid battery is low and the resulting exhaustgases can be very harmful to people and ani-mals.
HYBRID
This is the default mode in which the electricmotor and combustion engine work together.
The vehicle starts in Hybrid mode. The controlsystem uses both the electric motor and the gas-oline engine - separately or in tandem - and cal-culates optimal utilization with regard to perform-ance, fuel consumption and comfort. At highspeeds, ground clearance is automatically low-
ered3 to reduce air resistance. Driving capacity onthe electric motor alone is determined by factors
such as the hybrid battery's charge level, theneed for heat/cooling in the passenger compart-ment, etc.
If there is sufficient charge in the battery, it ispossible to drive solely on electric power. Whenthe accelerator pedal is pressed, only the electricmotor will be activated until the battery reaches acertain charge level. Above this level, the currentin the battery cannot supply the power requestedby the accelerator pedal and the combustionengine will start.
When the hybrid battery's charge level is low, thecombustion engine will start more frequently tosave the remaining current in the battery. Chargethe hybrid battery from a 120-240 volt outletusing a charging cable, or activate Charge inFunction view to reset the option of only usingthe electric motor.
This drive mode is designed for low energy con-sumption with an optimized mix between theelectric motor and gasoline engine, without com-promising on climate comfort or driving experi-ence. When faster acceleration is requested bythe driver, the electric driveline will be utilized tohelp provide maximum additional power. Thevehicle also monitors the driving conditions andautomatically engages all-wheel drive if neces-sary. All-wheel drive and extra electric power arealways available regardless of the battery'scharging status.
Information in the instrument panel
When driving in Hybrid mode, a hybrid gauge willbe displayed in the instrument panel. The gaugewill indicate the amount of electrical currentrequired when the driver depresses the accelera-tor pedal. The marker between the lightning andthe drop shows how much current is available.
The instrument panel gauge when both the electricmotor and the combustion engine are being used.
The instrument panel also shows howmuch current is being restored to thebattery (regenerated) during light brak-ing.

Preconditioning
Whenever possible, precondition the vehiclebefore driving by connecting the chargingcable to an electrical outlet.
Avoid parking the vehicle somewhere wherethe interior will become too hot or too coldwhile the vehicle is parked. If possible, parkthe vehicle in a climate-controlled garage.
During a short drive after passenger com-partment preconditioning, turn off the pas-senger compartment fan or the air condition-ing in a hot climate.
If preconditioning is not possible when it iscold outside, use seat and steering wheelheating first. Avoid heating the entire pas-senger compartment to reduce the amountof current being taken from the hybrid bat-tery.
Driving
Choose the Pure drive mode to help mini-mize electric power consumption.
Maintain a steady speed and a generous fol-lowing distance to traffic ahead to minimizebraking. This drive mode has the lowestpower consumption.
Balance energy requirements using theaccelerator pedal. Use the indicator on theinstrument panel to see available electricpower and avoid starting the combustionengine unnecessarily. The electric motor is
more effective than the combustion engine,especially at low speeds.
When braking is necessary, brake gentlyusing the brake pedal. This will help rechargethe hybrid battery. A regenerative function isintegrated in the brake pedal and can beaugmented by the electric motor's brakingcapacity when the gear selector is in modeB.
Higher speeds increase energy consumption- air resistance increases with speed.
Activate the Hold function in the Functionview at high speeds when traveling fartherthan is possible using the hybrid battery'scapacity.
Whenever possible, avoid using the Chargefunction to charge the hybrid battery. Charg-ing the battery using the combustion engineincreases fuel consumption and carbon diox-ide emissions.
In a cold climate, reduce heating of the wind-shield/rear window, mirrors, seats and thesteering wheel.
Maintain the correct pressure in the tires andcheck pressure regularly.
The type of tires used could affect energyconsumption - consult a retailer for advice onsuitable tires.
Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle- the heavier the load, the higher the fuelconsumption.
Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
Avoid driving with the windows open.
Do not keep the vehicle still on an upwardgradient by using the accelerator pedal. Usethe brakes instead.

Using the electric motor only
When using the electric motor, Volvo TwinEngine provides a combination of good fueleconomy, low emissions and high performance.
For energy-efficient driving:
Select the Pure drive mode to help maximizedriving range using only the electric motor.
Balance energy requirements using theaccelerator pedal. Use the indicator on theinstrument panel's hybrid gauge to see avail-able electric power and avoid starting thecombustion engine unnecessarily.
When braking is necessary, brake gentlyusing the brake pedal. This will recharge thehybrid battery.

Factors affecting electric motorrange
A number of factors affect the electric motor'sdriving range. The ability to achieve a long driv-ing range varies according to the outside condi-tions and to how the vehicle is driven.
The certified value for the distance that can bedriven using the electric motor should not beconsidered an expected driving range. The actualrange is dependent on a number of factors.
Factors affecting driving range
The driver can influence some factors affectingdriving range, but not all.
The longest range is achieved under very favora-ble conditions when all factors positively influ-ence range.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems andequipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that:
the engine is running properly and that fuelconsumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning optimally
all lights are working ‒ adjust the headlightheight if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before drivingin cold/snowy conditions to make sure it can bedriven safely.
Before the cold season arrives:
Make sure the engine coolant contains 50%antifreeze. This mixture helps protect theengine from frost erosion down toapprox. -35 °C (-31 °F). Do not mix differenttypes of antifreeze as this could pose ahealth risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to prevent con-densation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oil withlow viscosity (thinner oil) improves cold-weather starting and reduces fuel consump-tion when driving with a cold engine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with harddriving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of thestart battery. Cold weather places greaterdemands on the start battery and reduces itscapacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in the washerfluid reservoir.

When switching to higher octane fuel orchanging gasoline brands, it may be neces-sary to fill the tank more than once before adifference in engine operation is noticeable.
Fuel Formulations
Do not use gasoline that contains lead or manga-nese as a knock inhibitor, and do not use leadadditives. Besides damaging the exhaust emis-sion control systems on your vehicle, lead hasbeen strongly linked to certain forms of cancer.
Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent.Unburned benzene has been strongly linked tocertain forms of cancer. If you live in an areawhere you must fill your own gas tank, take pre-cautions. These may include:
standing upwind away from the filler nozzlewhile refueling
refueling only at gas stations with vaporrecovery systems that fully seal the mouth ofthe filler neck during refueling
wearing neoprene gloves while handling afuel filler nozzle.
Use of Additives
With the exception of gas line antifreeze duringwinter months, do not add solvents, thickeners, or
other store-bought additives to your vehicle'sfuel, cooling, or lubricating systems. Overuse maydamage your engine, and some of these additivescontain organically volatile chemicals. Do notneedlessly expose yourself to these chemicals.
WARNING
Never carry a cell phone that is switched onwhile refueling your vehicle. If the phone rings,this may cause a spark that could ignite gaso-line fumes, resulting in fire and injury.
WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless,and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumes insidethe vehicle, make sure the passenger com-partment is ventilated, and immediately returnthe vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for correction.
Demanding driving
In demanding driving conditions, such as whentowing a trailer or driving in hot weather or forprolonged periods at high altitudes, it may be a
good idea to switch to a higher-octane fuel (AKI6
91 or higher) or to switch to another brand ofgasoline in order to fully utilize the vehicle'sengine capacity and optimize traction.
