Change
To shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is within thepermissible range for the selected gear, a gearshift will take place each time a paddle is pulled.After each gear shift, a number indicating thecurrent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and B
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the rightpaddle (+) toward the steering wheel andholding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instrumentpanel.
>The transmission will revert to gear D or Bdepending on which gear was selectedbefore the paddles were activated.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddlesare deactivated after a short period of time if theyare not used. The number of the current gear willno longer be displayed in the instrument panel.
In gear position B, the paddles will not activateautomatically.

Shiftlock
The automatic transmission's shiftlock functionhelps prevent inadvertently moving the gearselector between different positions.

From Park - P
To move to another gear from P (Park), the brakepedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle hasbeen stationary for at least 3 seconds (with orwithout the engine running), the gear selector willbe locked in that position.
To move the gear selector from N to anothergear, the brake pedal must be depressed and theignition in mode II.
Messages in the instrument panel
If the gear selector is locked in position, a mes-sage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.Gear lever Press brake pedal to activategear lever.
There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

Emission control system
To help ensure that the emission control systemfunctions optimally, the combustion engine willrun for several minutes after it is started. Theamount of time the combustion engine needs tobe used varies depending on the temperature ofthe three-way catalytic converter.

Drive modes
Drive modes affect the vehicle's driving charac-teristics in different ways to enhance and sim-plify the driving experience in certain types of sit-uations.
Drive modes enable easy access to the vehicle'smany functions and settings in different drivingsituations. The following systems are adapted tohelp optimize driving characteristics in each drivemode:

Climate control settings
Select the drive mode that is best suited to thecurrent driving conditions. Keep in mind that notall drive modes are available in all situations.
Available drive modes
WARNING
Keep in mind that the vehicle does not emitany engine noise when using the electricmotor and may therefore be difficult to detectfor children, pedestrians, cyclists or animals.This is particularly true at low speeds, e.g. inparking lots.
WARNING
Do not leave the vehicle in an unventilatedarea with a drive mode activated and the com-bustion engine switched off. The engine willstart automatically if the charge level in thehybrid battery is low and the resulting exhaustgases can be very harmful to people and ani-mals.

Changing drive mode
Select the drive mode that is best suited to thecurrent driving conditions.
The drive mode is changed using the control inthe tunnel console.
Keep in mind that not all drive modes are availa-ble in all situations.
To change drive mode:
1.Press the DRIVE MODE control.
>A pop-up menu will appear in the centerdisplay.
2. Roll the wheel upward or downward to thedesired drive mode.
3. Press the drive mode control or tap its buttonin the center display to confirm the selection.

To avoid short circuits or other damage, the fol-lowing steps are recommended when jump star-ting the battery:
1.Put the ignition in mode 0.
2.Make sure the auxiliary battery (the batteryused to jump start the discharged battery)has a voltage of 12 volts.
3. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle,turn off that vehicle's engine and make surethat the vehicles are not touching each other.
4. Clamp the red jumper cable onto the auxiliarybattery's positive (+) terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jump cable carefully to preventshort circuits with other components in theengine compartment.
5. Fold back the cover over your vehicle's posi-tive (+) jump start terminal (2).
6.Clamp the other end of the red jumper cableto your vehicle's positive (+) jump start termi-nal (2).
7. Clamp the black jumper cable onto the auxili-ary battery's negative (-) terminal (3).
8. Clamp the other end of the black jumpercable to your vehicle's negative (-) groundpoint (4).
9. Make sure the jumper cables are securelyattached to help prevent sparks while jumpstarting.
10. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle andlet it run for a few minutes at a higher idlingspeed than normal, about 1500 rpm.
11. Start your vehicle's engine. If the enginedoes not start, allow an additional 10minutes of charging time and then try to startthe engine again.
NOTE
When the engine is started under normalconditions, the vehicle's electrical drive motoris prioritized – the gasoline engine remainsoff. This means that after the start knob hasbeen turned clockwise, the electric motor has"started" and the vehicle is ready to be driven.Start of the electric motor is indicated by theindicator lights on the instrument panel goingout and its preselected theme illuminating.
CAUTION
Do not touch the connections between thecable and the vehicle during the start attempt.Risk of sparking.
12. Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder ‒ first the black cables and then thered cables.
Make sure that none of the clamps of theblack jumper cables come into contact witheither vehicle's positive (+) jump start termi-nals or either of the red jumper cable's con-nected clamps.

Attaching and removing the towingeyelet
Use the towing eyelet to tow another vehicle.Screw the towing eyelet securely into place inthe threaded outlet behind the cover on theright-hand side of the rear bumper.
NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with a towbar, thereis no rear attachment for the towing eye.
Attaching the towing eyelet
Take out the towing eyelet, which is stored ina foam block under the floor in the cargocompartment.
Remove the cover by pressing on the markwith a finger while folding out the oppositeside/corner.
>The cover turns along its center line andcan then be removed.
3. Screw the towing eyelet into place as far aspossible.
Fasten the eyelet securing by, for example,inserting a lug wrench* through it and usingthis as a lever.
CAUTION
It is important that the towing eye is screwedin securely as far as possible.

–Unscrew the towing eyelet after use andreturn it to its storage location in the foamblock.

Programming HomeLink®*16
Follow these instructions to program
HomeLink®, reset all programming, or programindividual buttons.
NOTE
In some vehicles, the ignition must be on or in
the "accessory position" before HomeLink®
can be programmed or used. It can be a goodidea to put new batteries in the remote con-
trol being replaced by HomeLink® for fasterprogramming and better radio signal trans-
mission. The HomeLink® buttons should bereset before programming.
WARNING
While HomeLink® is being programmed, thegarage door or gate being programmed maybe activated. Make sure that no one is nearthe door or gate during programming. Whenprogramming a garage door opener, it isadvised to park outside of the garage.
1.Point the remote control at the HomeLink®
button to be programmed and hold it about2-8 cm (1-3 inches) from the button. Do not
obstruct the HomeLink® indicator light.
Note: Some remote controls are more effec-
tive at programming HomeLink® from a dis-tance of about 15-20 cm (6-12 inches).Keep this in mind if you experience any pro-gramming difficulties.
2.Press and hold both the remote control but-
ton and the HomeLink® button to be pro-grammed.
3. Do not release the buttons until the indicatorlight has stopped flashing slowly (about oncea second) and either flashes quickly (about10 times a second) or glows steadily.
>If the indicator light glows steadily:Indication that programming is complete.Press the programmed button twice toactivate.
If the indicator light flashes quickly:The device being programmed with
HomeLink® may have a security functionthat requires an extra step. Try pressingthe programmed button twice to seewhether the programming works. Other-wise, continue with the following steps.
4. Locate the "training" button17 on thereceiver for the e.g. garage door opener. It isusually located near the antenna bracket onthe receiver.
5.Press and release the "training" button once.Programming must be completed within 30seconds after pressing the button.
6.Press and release the HomeLink® button tobe programmed. Repeat the press/hold/release sequence a second time. For somereceivers, the sequence may need to berepeated a third time.
> Programming is now completed and thegarage door, gate, etc. should now beactivated when the programmed button ispressed.

The globe is divided into 15 magnetic zones.
The compass23 should be calibrated if the vehi-cle is driven from one zone to another.
To calibrate the compass:
1.Stop the vehicle in a large, open area awayfrom steel constructions and high-voltagepower lines.
2. Start the engine and switch off all electricalequipment (climate system, wipers, etc.) andmake sure all doors are closed.
NOTE
Calibration may fail or not even be initiated ifelectrical equipment is not turned off.
3. Hold the button on the bottom of the rear-view mirror pressed for about 3 seconds(using e.g. a paper clip). The number of thecurrent magnetic zone is shown.

4. Press the button on the underside of themirror repeatedly until the desired magneticzone (1–15) appears (see the map of mag-netic zones).
5.Wait until the display again shows C, orpress and hold the button on the undersideof the rearview mirror for approx. 6 secondsuntil C is displayed.
6.Drive slowly in a circle at a speed of no morethan 10 km/h (6 mph) until a compass direc-tion is shown in the display. This indicatesthat calibration is complete. Drive in a circletwo more times to fine-tune the calibration.

Internet-connected vehicle*
When the vehicle is connected to the Internet, itis possible to use web radio and music servicesvia apps, download software and contact retail-ers from the vehicle.
The vehicle can be connected to the Internetusing Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the vehicle's integratedmodem (SIM card).
When the vehicle is connected to the Internet, itis possible to share the vehicle's Internet connec-tion (Wi-Fi hotspot) so that other devices, e.g.
tablets, can access the Internet12.
The Internet status is shown by a symbol in thecenter display's status bar.
NOTE
Data (data traffic) is transfered when usingthe internet, which can incur additional costs.
Activating data roaming can cause additionalcharges.
Contact your network operator about datatraffic costs.
NOTE
When using Apple CarPlay, it is only possibleto connect the vehicle to the Internet usingWi-Fi or the vehicle's modem.
