Automatic locking feature
XTo deactivate:press and hold buttonCforabout five seconds until a tone sounds.
XTo activate:press and hold buttonDforabout five seconds until a tone sounds.
If you press one of the two buttons and do nothear a tone, the relevant setting has alreadybeen selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when theignition is switched on and the wheels areturning.
You could therefore lock yourself out if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic lockingfunction on and off using the on-board com-puter (Ypage 201).
Power closing
Power closing pulls the doors and trunk lidinto their locks automatically even if they areonly partly closed.
XPower closing feature (doors):push thedoor past the first detent position into thelock.Power closing will pull the door fully closed.
XTo power close the trunk lid:lightly pushthe trunk lid closed.The power closing function pulls the trunklid closed.
Unlocking/locking the driver's door
using the mechanical key
iIf you want to centrally lock the vehicleusing the mechanical key, begin by pressingthe locking button for the interior lockingmechanism while the driver's door is open.Then lock the driver's door using themechanical key.
XTo unlock:turn the mechanical key coun-ter-clockwise as far as it will go to positionG.
XTo lock:turn the mechanical key clockwiseas far as it will go to positionG.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock andopen the driver's door, the anti-theft alarmsystem will be triggered. Switch off the alarm(Ypage 72).
Trunk
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured
or not secured sufficiently, they could slip,
tip over or be flung around and thereby hit
vehicle occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking
or a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
!The trunk lid swings upwards whenopened. Therefore, make sure that there issufficient clearance above the trunk lid.

XTo open:pull remote operating switchCfor the trunk lid until the trunk lid opens.If the trunk partition was closed, it opensautomatically and remains open.

You can open and close the trunk lid from thedriver's seat when the vehicle is stationary andunlocked.
Locking the trunk separately
You can lock the trunk separately. If you thenunlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk remainslocked and cannot be opened.
XClose the trunk lid.
XTake the mechanical key out of the Smart-Key (Ypage 76).
XInsert the mechanical key into the trunk lidlock as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key clockwise frompositionGto positionH.
XRemove the mechanical key.
XInsert the mechanical key into the Smart-Key.
Unlocking the trunk (mechanical
key)
!The trunk lid swings upwards whenopened. Therefore, make sure that there issufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk cannot be unlocked with theSmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the mechanicalkey.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock andopen the trunk lid, the anti-theft alarm systemwill be triggered. Switch off the alarm(Ypage 72).
XTake the mechanical key out of the Smart-Key (Ypage 76).
XInsert the mechanical key into the trunk lidlock as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key from positionGcounter-clockwise as far as it will go to posi-tionH. Simultaneously pull the trunk lidhandle.The trunk is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back to positionGand remove it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the Smart-Key.
Emergency release for the trunk
You can unlock the trunk lid from the insidewith the emergency release button.

Opening and closing

In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh airthrough the air vents into the vehicle interior,please observe the following notes:
Rkeep the air inlet grille on the hood and inthe engine compartment on the front-passenger side free of blockages, such asice, snow or leaves.
Rnever cover the air vents or air intake grillesin the vehicle interior.
iYou can move the adjusters for the airvents vertically or horizontally to set thedirection of the airflow.
iFor optimal climate control in the vehicle,open the air vents completely and set theadjusters to the central position.

XTo open the center air vents:turn theadjuster in one of center air ventsCcoun-ter-clockwise.
XTo close the center air vents:turn theadjuster in one of center air ventsCclock-wise until it engages.
Setting the side air vents

Setting the glove compartment air

!Close the air vent when heating the vehi-cle.
At high outside temperatures, open the airvent and activate the "cooling with air dehu-midification" function. Otherwise, tempera-ture-sensitive items stored in the glove boxcould be damaged.

GWARNING
If you operate information systems and com-
munication equipment integrated in the
vehicle when driving, you may be distracted
from the traffic situation. You could also
lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of
an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the traffic
situation permits. If you are not sure that
this is possible, park the vehicle paying
attention to traffic conditions and operate
the equipment when the vehicle is station-
ary.
You must observe the legal requirements forthe country in which you are currently drivingwhen operating the on-board computer.

If the instrument cluster has failed or mal-
functioned, you may not recognize function
restrictions in systems relevant to safety.
The operating safety of your vehicle may be
impaired. There is a risk of an accident.
Drive on carefully. Have the vehicle checked
at a qualified specialist workshop immedi-
ately.
The on-board computer only shows messagesor warnings from certain systems in the multi-function display. You should therefore makesure your vehicle is operating safely at alltimes.
If the operating safety of your vehicle isimpaired, pull over as soon as it is safe to doso. Contact a qualified specialist workshop.

Displays and operation
Instrument cluster lighting
The lighting in the instrument cluster, in thedisplays and the controls in the vehicle interiorcan be adjusted using the brightness controlknob.
The brightness control knob is located on thebottom left of the instrument cluster(Ypage 33).
XTurn the brightness control knob clockwiseor counter-clockwise.If you turn the light switch (Ypage 109) totheX,`orXposition, the bright-ness will depend upon the brightness of theambient light.
The light sensor in the instrument clusterautomatically controls the brightness of themultifunction display. In daylight, the dis-plays in the instrument cluster are not illu-minated.
Speedometer with segments
The segments in the speedometer indicatewhich speed range is available.
RCruise control activated (Ypage 154):
The segments light up from the storedspeed to the maximum speed.
RActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC activated(Ypage 156):
One or two segments in the set speed rangelight up.
RActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC detects avehicle in front moving more slowly than thestored speed:
The segments between the speed of thevehicle in front and the stored speed lightup.
Tachometer
!Do not drive in the overrevving range, asthis could damage the engine.
The red band in the tachometer indicates theengine's overrevving range.
The fuel supply is interrupted to protect theengine when the red band is reached.
Outside temperature display
You should pay special attention to road con-ditions when temperatures are around freezingpoint.

On-board computer and displays

GWARNING
If engine oil comes into contact with hot
components in the engine compartment, it
may ignite. There is a risk of fire and injury.
Make sure that engine oil is not spilled next
to the filler neck. Let the engine cool down
and thoroughly clean the engine oil off the
components before starting the engine.
HEnvironmental note
When adding oil, take care not to spill any. If
oil enters the soil or waterways, it is harmful
to the environment.
!Use only engine oils and oil filters that areapproved for vehicles with a service system.A list of the engine oils and oil filters thathave been tested and approved in accord-ance with Mercedes-Benz Specifications forService Products is available at any author-ized Mercedes-Benz Center.
The following cause engine failure or dam-age to the exhaust system:
RUse of engine oils and oil filters that havenot been expressly approved for the ser-vice system
RReplacement of engine oil and oil filterafter the replacement interval specifiedby the service system has expired
RUse of engine oil additives
!Do not add too much oil. If the oil level isabove the "max" mark on the dipstick, toomuch oil has been added. This can lead todamage to the engine or the catalytic con-verter. Have excess oil siphoned off.
Example: engine oil cap
XTurn capCcounter-clockwise and removeit.
XAdd engine oil.If the oil level is at or below the MIN markon the oil dipstick, add 1.1 US qt (1.0 liter)of engine oil.
XReplace capCon the filler neck and turnclockwise.Ensure that the cap locks into placesecurely.
XCheck the oil level again with the oil dipstick(Ypage 266).

GWARNING
Certain components in the engine compart-
ment, such as the engine, radiator and parts
of the exhaust system, can become very
hot. Working in the engine compartment
poses a risk of injury.
Where possible, let the engine cool down
and touch only the components described in
the following.
GWARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is over-
heated or when there is a fire in the engine
compartment could expose you to hot gases
or other service products. There is a risk of
injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there is a fire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed
and contact the fire department.
GWARNING
The engine compartment contains moving
components. Certain components, such as
the radiator fan, may continue to run or start
again suddenly when the ignition is off.
There is a risk of injury.

Comply with the service intervals in theMaintenance Booklet, or contact a qualifiedspecialist workshop for more information.
!Always have work on batteries carried outat a qualified specialist workshop.
Should it, in exceptional circumstances, beabsolutely necessary to disconnect the 12-volt battery yourself, please observe the fol-lowing:
RSecure the vehicle to prevent it from roll-ing away.
RSwitch off the ignition.
RDisconnect the negative terminal first andthen the positive terminal.
After the work has been done, install thebattery and replace the cover of the positiveterminal clamp firmly.
Comply with safety precautions and take pro-tective measures when handling batteries.
Risk of explosion.
Fire, open flames and smoking areprohibited when handling the bat-tery. Avoid creating sparks.
Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-tact with skin, eyes or clothing.
Wear suitable protective clothing,especially gloves, apron and face-guard.
Rinse any acid spills immediatelywith clear water. Contact a physi-cian if necessary.
Wear eye protection.
Keep children away.

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use batteries which have
been tested and approved for your vehicle byMercedes-Benz. These batteries provideincreased impact protection to prevent vehicleoccupants from suffering acid burns shouldthe battery be damaged in the event of anaccident.
In order for the battery to achieve the maxi-mum possible service life, it must always besufficiently charged.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery maydischarge over time if you do not use the vehi-cle. In this case, have the battery disconnec-ted at a qualified specialist workshop. You canalso charge the battery with a charger recom-mended by Mercedes-Benz. Contact a quali-fied specialist workshop for further informa-tion.
Have the battery condition of charge checkedmore frequently if you use the vehicle mainlyfor short trips or if you leave it standing idlefor a lengthy period. Consult a qualified spe-cialist workshop if you wish to leave your vehi-cle parked for a long period of time.
Remove the SmartKey if you park the vehicleand do not require any electrical consumers.The vehicle will then use very little energy,thus conserving battery power.
After an interruption to the power supply, e.g.due to a discharged battery, you must resetthe clock (see the Digital Operator's Manual).
Charging the battery
GWARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is suffi-
cient ventilation while charging and jump-
starting. Do not lean over a battery.
GWARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-

Breakdown assistance

The brackets for the screw-in towing eye arelocated in the bumpers. They are at the frontand at the rear, behind the covers.
XRemove the towing eye from the vehicle toolkit (Ypage 277).
XFront bumper:insert a finger into therecess on the bottom edge of coverC.
XPull coverCout of the bumper towards youin the direction of the arrow.

Towing a vehicle with both axles on
the ground
GWARNING
You can no longer steer the vehicle if the
steering wheel lock has been engaged.
There is a risk of an accident.
Always switch off the ignition when towing
the vehicle with a tow cable or a tow bar.
The automatic transmission shifts to position]automatically when you open the driver'sor front-passenger door or when you removethe SmartKey from the ignition lock.
In order to ensure that the automatic trans-mission stays in position\\when towingaway the vehicle, you must observe the follow-ing points:
XSwitch on the hazard warning lamps(Ypage 111).
XMake sure that the vehicle is stationary andthat the SmartKey is in position
