2-8. Driving Tips
Saving Fuel and Protection of the Environment
How you operate your Toyota determines how far it will travel on a
tank of fuel. Use these suggestions to help save fuel and reduce CO2.
• Avoid long warm-ups. Once the en gine runs smoothly, begin driv-
ing.
• Avoid fast starts.
• Drive at lower speeds.
• Anticipate when to apply the brakes (avoid sudden braking).
• Follow the maintenance schedule and have your Toyota dealer per- form inspections and servicing.
• Use the air conditioner only when necessary.
• Slow down on rough roads.
• Keep the tires properly inflated.
• Do not carry unnecessary weight.
• Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
• Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
• Keep windows closed at high speeds.
• Slow down when driving in crosswinds and headwinds.
WARNING
■ Never stop the engine when going down a hill
Stopping the engine when going down a hill is dangerous. This causes the
loss of power steering and power brake control, and may cause damage to
the drivetrain. Any loss of steering or braking control could cause an acci-
dent.

Maintenance Monitor
Based on the engine operating conditions, the onboard computer in
your vehicle calculates the remaining oil life in the United States and
Puerto Rico. The wrench indicator light in the instrument cluster will
be illuminated when remaining oil life becomes less than 600 miles
(1000 km), or remaining days are less than 15 (whichever comes
first). The system must be rese t whenever replacing the engine oil.
■Reset method
Press and hold the dashboard
illumination knob with the igni-
tion switched off, then switch it
on. Keep pressing the dash-
board illumination knob for
more than 5 seconds. The mas-
ter warning light will flash for a
few seconds when the reset is
completed.
Select the icon on the home screen to display the “Applica-
tions” screen.
Select “Vehicle Status Monitor”.
Select “Maintenance” to display the maintenance list screen.
Switch the tab and select the se tting item you want to change.

Maintenance and Care
Owner Maintenance Precautions
The owner or a qualified service technician should make these vehicle
inspections at the indicated inte rvals to ensure safe and dependable
operation.
Bring any problem to the attention of your Toyota dealer or qualified
service technician as soon as possible.
■When Refueling • Brake and clutch fluid level ( →P. 428)
• Engine coolant level ( →P. 425)
• Engine oil level ( →P. 424)
• Washer fluid level ( →P. 429)
■At Least Monthly
• Tire inflation pressures ( →P. 439)
■At Least Twice a Year (For Example, Every Spring and Fall)
You can do the following scheduled maintenance items if you have
some mechanical ability and a few basic tools and if you closely fol-
low the directions in this manual.
• Engine coolant ( →P. 425)
• Engine oil ( →P. 422)
Improper or incomplete service may result in problems. This section
gives instructions only for items that are easy to perform.
As explained in the Introduction ( →P. 412), several procedures can be
done only by a qualified service technician with special tools.
Improper owner maintenance during the warranty period may affect
warranty coverage. Refer to Introduction ( →P. 412) for owner’s
responsibility in protecting your in vestment. For details, read the sep-
arate Toyota Warranty and Mainten ance Guide provided with the vehi-
cle. If you are unsure about any se rvicing or maintenance procedure,
have it done by your Toyota dealer.
There are strict environmental laws regarding the disposal of waste oil
and fluids. Please dispose of your waste properly and with due regard
to the environment.
We recommend that you entrust the oil and fluid changes of your vehi-
cle to your Toyota dealer.
