2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after theengine starts. 3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal, push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switchto the “OFF” and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition switch if the engine starts. If theengine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine st
ill will not start, con-
tact your local Mitsubishi Motors dealeror a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible tostart from a standstill even with the selector
lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position. This occurs because the transaxle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate aproblem. If this occurs, place the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-upoperation.

The turbocharger increases engine power bypushing large amounts of air into the engine’s cylinders. The finned parts inside the turbo- charger turn at extremely high speeds and aresubjected to extremely high temperatures.
They are lubricated by
engine oil and cooled
by engine oil and coolan
t. If the engine oil is
not replaced at the specified intervals, the bearings may seize or emit abnormal noise.

The CVT will automati
cally and continuously
change its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions. This helps achievesmooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency.

Turbocharger operation
CAUTION Do not run the engine at high speeds (for example, by revving it or by acceleratingrapidly) immediately after starting it. Do not stop the engine immediately after high-speed or uphill driving. First allow the engine to idle to give the turbocharger a chance to cool down.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently reinsert it all the way.Slowly pull the dipstick straight out and check the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the minimum amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the cylinder headcover, and fill to within the “Good” range.
If you drive with the engine hood left open, a warning display appears on the information screen in the multi-information display.

NOTE
If it is difficult to verify the oil level, wipe off the dipstick and reinsert it. Wait a moment and then recheck the oil level by checking the upper surface of the dipstick.
CAUTION Overfilling will cause oil aeration and loss of oil pressure, which could damage the engine.WA R N I N G Used engine oil is poisonous, and can dam- age your skin. Prolonged and repeatedcontact may cause serious skin disorders, including dermatitis and cancer. Do not let used oil touch your skin and wash thor-oughly after working with it. Keep used oil out of the reach of children.NOTE
Engine oil consumption
is greatly influenced
by payload, engine speed, etc.

Air cleaner filter 9-8 Vehicle care and maintenance

The radiator cap must be
sealed tight to pre-
vent losing coolant, which may result inengine damage. Only use a Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Parts radiator cap, or an approved equivalent. Do not overfill the reserve tank. Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiatorwhen the engine cools down. If you need to change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con-tents of the reserve tank must be protected against freezing. Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean.
If the engine coolant temperature does not rise after the engine is warmed-up, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

The air cleaner filter w
ill get dirty and dusty
from use and not filter properly. Replace it with a new filter using the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCEMANUAL”. 1. Unclamp and take out the air cleaner fil- ter. 2. Install the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
3. Put the duct back on in its original posi- tion.

The continuously variable transmission(CVT) should be maintained and serviced by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice to obtain the best performance and longest life. It is impor- tant that the transmission fluid is kept at thecorrect level.
Radiator cap
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hotsteam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.

NOTE
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Parts are recom- mended when replacing the air cleaner filter. After replacing the air cleaner filter, make sure that the hinges at the bottom of thecover are firmly set.

The windshield and rear window washer fluid reservoir is in the engine compartment.
Check the washer fluid level at regular inter- vals and add washer fluid to reservoir if nec- essary. Open the reservoir cap and check the fluidlevel with the dipstick. When freezing weather is anticipated, flush out the water in the reservoir by operating thepump. Fill the reservoir with windshield anti-freeze (not radiator antifreeze), and operate the system for a few seconds to flush out the residual water.
N00938701301
Check the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid level must be between the “MAX”and “MIN” marks on the reservoir.
