All seats are equipped with a seat belt which uses one combined lap-and-shoulder belt with an emergency locking retractor. This system is designed to provide both com- fort and safety. It permits full extension and automatic retraction of the belts during nor- mal vehicle operation. A sensing device
inside the belt retractor is designed to lock the retractor in the event of a sudden change in the vehicle’s motion.
 To reduce the risk to the driver of serious injury or death during deployment of the driver’s airbag, always properly wear the seat belt and adjust the driver’s seat as far back as possible while maintaining a posi-tion that still enables you to fully apply the pedals, easily control the steering wheel, and safely operate the vehicle. To reduce the risk to a front seat passen- ger of serious injury or death from adeploying airbag, make sure the passenger always wears the seat belt properly, remains seated all the way back andupright in their seat, and moves the seat as far back as possible. Refer to “Supplemen- tal Restraint System (SRS) - airbag” onpage 4-30 for additional information. Never hold an infant or child in your arms or on your lap when riding in this vehicle even when you are wearing your seat belt. Never place any part of the seat belt youare wearing around an infant or child. Failure to follow these simple instructions creates a risk of serious injury or death toyour child in the event of an accident or sudden stop.WA R N I N G
 Children 12 years old and under should always ride in the rear seat and be prop- erly restrained. This reduces their risk of serious injury or death in an accident, especially due to a deploying front passen-ger’s airbag. Refer to “Child restraint sys- tems” on page 4-22 for additional information. Any child who is too small to properly wear a seat belt must be properlyrestrained in an appropriate child restraint system. Infants MUST be placed in a rear-facing child safety seat and positioned in the rear seat. In the event of an accident, all seat belt assemblies, including retractors andattachment hardware, should be inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer to determine whether replacementis necessary.

For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationarywith the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in“D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi- tion. To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, firmly apply the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position.
If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may bethat there is something unusual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device to activate. Immediately have your vehiclechecked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer or a repair facility of your choice.

The electronically controlled 4WD is a sys- tem that improves acceleration performance and stability performance by controlling front-rear distribution of driving torque withoperating the electronic control coupling arranged in the rear differential assembly.
CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the selector lever is in a position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).

The AYC is a system with a yaw control function, that controls the left-right driv-ing/braking force using the brakes. The yaw control function is a function that enhances vehicle cornering performance and vehicle stability with management of vehicle turning power (yaw moment) by controllingthe drive power difference of the left and right wheels and the braking force when the vehicle does not turn in response to steeringinput, such as when the steering wheel is turned quickly or when driving on slippery road.

AUTO
This mode can be used on both dry and wet roads. The distri-bution of driving/braking torque to each wheel is auto- matically controlled according to the driving condition.
SNOW
This mode is for driving on slippery road surfaces, such as snow-covered roads.
GRAVEL
This mode is for driving where maximum traction is required. This mode is suitable for driv- ing on rough roads or driving in mud, sand or fresh snow.

CAUTION Do not operate the drive mode-selector with the front wheels spinning on a snowy road or in similar conditions. The vehicle could lunge in an unexpected direction.

Your vehicle has been designed primarily for use on pavement. But its unique 4-wheel drive system allowsyou to occasionally travel on unpaved roads, to campgrounds, picnic sites, and similar locations.Not only does this ensure better handling on dry, paved roads but also permits better trac- tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow-covered roads and when moving out of mud. But it is not suitable for heavy off road use or towing in rough conditions.It is particularly important to note that 4- wheel drive may not give sufficient hill
climbing ability and engine braking on steep slopes. You should try to avoid driving on steep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when drivingon sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficient traction may not be available in certain circumstances.Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.

NOTE
 Driving on rough roads can be hard on a vehicle. Before you leave the pavement, be sure all scheduled maintenance and service has been done, and that you have inspected your vehicle. Pay special attention to thecondition of the tires, and check the tire pres- sures.  Mitsubishi Motors is not responsible to the operator for any damage or injury caused or liability incurred by improper and negligentoperation of a vehicle. All techniques of vehicle operation depend on the skill and experience of the operator and other partici-pating parties. Any deviation from the rec- ommended operating instructions above is at their own risk.  Note that the stopping distance required of the 4-wheel drive vehicle differs very littlefrom that of the front-wheel drive vehicle. When driving on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that youkeep a sufficient distance between your vehi- cle and the one ahead of you.  The driving posture should be more upright; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation. Warning light
Warning display If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will come on and the warningdisplay will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display. Under normal conditions, the warning lightcome on when the ignition switch is turned tothe “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after the engine has started.

WA R N I N GDo not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be acti-vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will returnto normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavior is not abnormal. The headlights will return totheir original brightness after a short while.

CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.

The ASC is automatically activated when theignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion. You can deactivate the system by press- ing down the ASC OFF switch for 3 secondsor longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the indica- tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the ASC OFF switch; the indicator is turned off.
NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if youdepress it. These do not indicate a malfunc- tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment.This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction.  When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
 The skid control function operates at speeds of approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
ASC OFF switch
CAUTION For safety reasons, the ASC OFF switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.

 Using the ASC OFF switch turns off both the stability control function and the traction control function.  When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may not allow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC withthe ASC OFF switch will make it easier to move out your vehicle.  If you continue to press the ASC OFF switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mistaken operation protection function” will activateand the ASC will turn back on.

ASC OFF indicator This indicator will turn on when theASC is turned off with the ASC OFF switch.
CAUTION When display/indicator blinks, ASC is operating, which means that the road is slip- pery or that your vehicle’s wheels are begin- ning to slip. If this happens, drive slower. If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due to continuous brake control on a slippery road surface, the indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheat- ing, the brake control of the traction controlfunction will be temporarily suspended. The engine control of the traction control function and normal brake operation will notbe affected. Park your vehicle in a safe place. When the temperature in the braking system has come down, the indicator will be turned off and the traction control f
unction will start operat-
ing again.NOTE
 The indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the battery voltage momentarily dropped when the engine was started. It does not indicate a malfunction, provided that the display goesout immediately.
 When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the dis- play/indicator will blink.

4. The headlights will come on in the low beam setting for approximately 30 sec- onds. After the headlights go off, the headlights can be turned on again in thelow beam setting for approximately 30 seconds by pulling the turn signal lever toward you within 60 seconds of turningthe ignition switch to the “OFF” position or putting the operation mode in OFF. To turn on the headlights again after 60 sec-onds of turning the ignition switch to the“OFF” position or putting the operation mode in OFF, repeat the process from step 1.

The direction of the headlight beam (thedirection in which the light shines) altersaccording to the number of people and the load in the vehicle. Lower the headlight angle if it is too high due to the number of peopleand/or the load in the vehicle so that the head- lights’ glare does not distract the drivers of approaching vehicles. First set the light switch to the “ ” position, then turn the headlight leveling switch knob to lower the beam. The greater the number on the head- light leveling switch knob, the lower thebeam will point. Set the switch to the appropriate position so that the headlight beam is level with the road.
