The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is able toanalyze different occupant conditions andcrash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a variety offrontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety System consistsof:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outboard seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicatorlamp.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning light andbackup tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crashsensors, seatbelt pretensioners, frontseatbelt usage sensors, driver seatposition sensor, front passenger sensingsystem and indicator lights.
How Does the Personal Safety SystemWork?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During a crash, the restraints control module may deploy theseatbelt pretensioners, one or both stagesof the dual-stage airbags based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.

GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNING
This battery pack should only beserviced by an authorized electricvehicle technician. Improper handling canresult in personal injury or death.
Note:The high voltage battery does notrequire regular service maintenance.
Your vehicle consists of various high voltagecomponents and wiring. All of the highvoltage power flows through specific wiringassemblies which are labeled as such or thatare covered with a solid orange convolute, orange striped tape or both. Do not come incontact with these components.
The high voltage battery system is a highvoltage, lithium-ion battery system. The packis located in the rear cargo area. The highvoltage battery system uses an air-cooledsystem to regulate the high voltage batterytemperature and help maximize high voltagebattery life.
Note:The high voltage battery is equippedwith air vents in the package tray that helpto regulate its temperature. It is important tokeep these openings free of obstructions.Do not block the flow of cabin air to thisarea.
HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICEDISCONNECT
The high voltage service disconnect turnsoff power from the high voltage battery.
There is a disconnect circuit in your vehicle.Disconnecting the circuit will automaticallydisable the high voltage battery.
To disable the battery and stop all highvoltage electric activity in the vehicle, youcan access the high voltage disconnectcircuit. To do this, you must unplug the circuitfrom the circuit port connected to the battery.
The service disconnect is equipped with anouter lever. This is to aid in properly seatingthe service disconnect lever. Remove this todisconnect the high voltage servicedisconnect.
The high voltage service disconnect islocated behind the rear fold down seats.
Disabling the High Voltage Battery
1. Fold down the rear seats.
2. Locate the access door and remove theplastic cover.

2.Go to the front of the vehicle and find thesecondary release lever, which is locatedunder the front of the hood, near theLincoln badge.
3. Release the hood latch by pushing thesecondary release lever to your left, toward the passenger side of the vehicle.
4. Raise the hood. A gas strut will supportthe hood.
5. To close the hood, lower the hood andapply closing force to the hood as itdrops the last 8 to 11 inches (20 to 30centimeters).
Note:Make sure that the hood is closed fullybefore operating your vehicle. A warningindicator will appear in the informationdisplay if not closed properly.
