ENGINE START/STOP BUTTON (IF EQUIPPED)
Illuminated ENGINE START/STOP
button
Whenever the front door is opened, the
ENGINE START/STOP button will illumi‐ nate for your convenience. The light will
go off after about 30 seconds when the
door is closed. It will also go off imme‐
diately when the theft-alarm system is
armed.

With manual transaxle
To turn off the engine (START/RUN position) or ve‐
hicle power (ON position), stop the vehicle then press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
With automatic transaxle
To turn off the engine (START/RUN po‐
sition) or vehicle power (ON position),
press the ENGINE START/STOP button with the shift lever in the P (Park) posi‐
tion. When you press the ENGINE
START/STOP button without the shift lever in the P (Park) position, the EN‐
GINE START/STOP button will not
change to the OFF position but to the ACC position.
Also, the steering wheel locks when the
ENGINE START/STOP button is in the
OFF position to protect you against theft. It locks when the door is opened.
Not illuminated
Vehicles equipped with anti-theftsteering column lock
The steering wheel locks when the en‐ gine start/stop button is in the OFF po‐
sition to protect you against theft. It
locks when the door is opened.
If the steering wheel is not locked prop‐ erly when you open the driver's door,
the warning chime will sound. If the
problem is not solved, have the system checked by a professional workshop.
Kia recommends to visit an authorized
Kia dealer/service partner.
In addition, if the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the OFF position after the
driver's door is opened, the steering
wheel will not lock and the warning chime will sound. In such a situation,
close the door. Then the steering wheel
will lock and the warning chime will stop.
NOTICE
If the steering wheel doesn't unlock
properly, the ENGINE START/STOP
button will not work. Press the EN‐

tension while pressing the engine

•When you turn off the engine, the
vehicle should be stopped.
CAUTION
You are able to turn off the engine(START/RUN) or vehicle power (ON),only when the vehicle is not in mo‐tion. In an emergency situation whilethe vehicle is in motion, you are ableto turn the engine off and to theACC position by pressing the enginestart/stop button for more than 2seconds or 3 times successivelywithin 3 seconds. If the vehicle is stillmoving, you can restart the engine

without depressing the brake pedalby pressing the engine start/stopbutton with the shift lever in the N(Neutral) position.
ACC (Accessory)
With manual transaxle
Press the engine start/stop button when the button is
in the OFF position without depressing the clutch pedal.
With automatic transaxle
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button
while it is in the OFF position without depressing the brake pedal.
The steering wheel unlocks and electri‐
cal accessories are operational.
If the ENGINE START/STOP button is in
the ACC position for more than 1 hour, the button is turned off automatically
to prevent battery discharge.

the ENGINE START/STOP button in the ON position for a long time. The bat‐
tery may discharge, because the engineis not running.
START/RUN
With manual transaxle
To start the engine, depress the clutch pedal and brake
pedal, then press the engine start/stop button with theshift lever in the N (Neutral) position.
With automatic transaxle
To start the engine, depress the brake
pedal and press the engine start/stop
button with the shift lever in the P (Park) or the N (Neutral) position. For
your safety, start the engine with the
shift lever in the P (Park) position.

ISG (IDLE STOP AND GO) SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)
Your vehicle may be equipped with the
ISG system, which reduces fuel con‐ sumption by automatically shutting
down the engine, when the vehicle is at
a standstill. (For example : red light, stop sign and traffic jam)
The engine starts automatically as
soon as the starting conditions are
met.
The ISG system is ON whenever the en‐ gine is running.
NOTICE
When the engine automatically
starts by the ISG system, some
warning lights (ABS, ESC, ESC OFF,
EPS or Parking brake warning light)
may turn on for a few seconds.
This happens because of low battery
voltage. It does not mean the sys‐
tem is malfunctioning.
Auto stop
To stop the engine in idle stop
mode
• Manual transaxle 1. Decrease the vehicle speed to less than 5 km/h.
2. Shift into N (Neutral) position.
3. Release the clutch pedal.
• Automatic transaxle 1. Decrease the vehicle speed to less than 5 km/h.
2. Press the brake pedal. The engine will stop and the green AU‐
TO STOP indicator (
) on the instru‐
ment cluster will illuminate. If your ve‐ hicle is equipped with a supervision
cluster, the notice will illuminate on the
LCD display.

• If you press the ISG OFF button again,the system will be activated and the
light on the ISG OFF button will turn off.
ISG system malfunction
The system may not operate
when:
- The ISG related sensors or system
error occurs.
The yellow AUTO STOP indicator (
)
on the instrument cluster will stay on
after blinking for 5 seconds and the light on the ISG OFF button will illumi‐
nate.
NOTICE
•If the ISG OFF button light is not
turned off by pressing the ISG OFF
button again or if the ISG system
continuously does not work cor‐
rectly, have your vehicle inspected
by a professional workshop as
soon as possible.
Kia recommends to contact an au‐
thorized Kia dealer/service part‐
ner.
•When the ISG OFF button light
comes on, it may stop illuminating
after driving your vehicle at ap‐
proximately 80 km/h for a maxi‐
mum of two hours and setting the
fan speed control knob below the
2nd position. If the ISG OFF button
light continues to be illuminated in
spite of the procedure, have your
vehicle inspected by a professional
workshop as soon as possible. Kia
recommends to contact an au‐
thorized Kia dealer/service part‐
ner.
NOTICE
If you want to use the ISG function,
the battery sensor needs to be cali‐
brated for approximately 4 hours
with the ignition off and then, turn
the engine on and off 2 or 3 times.
WARNING
When the engine is in Idle Stopmode, it's possible to restart the en‐gine without the driver taking anyaction.Before leaving the car or doing any‐thing in the engine room area, stopthe engine by turning the ignitionswitch to the LOCK(OFF) position orremoving the ignition key.

BRAKE SYSTEM
Power brakes
Your vehicle has power-assisted brakesthat adjust automatically through nor‐
mal usage.
In the event that the power-assisted
brakes lose power because of a stalled engine or some other reason, you can
still stop your vehicle by applying
greater force to the brake pedal than you normally would. The stopping dis‐
tance, however, will be longer.
When the engine is not running, the re‐
serve brake power is partially depleted each time the brake pedal is applied. Do
not pump the brake pedal when the
power assist has been interrupted.
Pump the brake pedal only when nec‐ essary to maintain steering control on
slippery surfaces.

•Do not drive with your foot restingon the brake pedal. This will createabnormal high brake tempera‐tures, excessive brake lining andpad wear, and increased stoppingdistances.
•When descending a long or steephill, shift to a lower gear and avoidcontinuous application of thebrakes. Continuous brake applica‐tion will cause the brakes to over‐heat and could result in a tempo‐rary loss of braking performance.
•Wet brakes may impair the vehi‐cle’s ability to safely slow down;the vehicle may also pull to oneside when the brakes are applied.Applying the brakes lightly will in‐dicate whether they have been af‐fected in this way. Always testyour brakes in this fashion afterdriving through deep water. To drythe brakes, apply them lightlywhile maintaining a safe forwardspeed until brake performance re‐turns to normal.

•Always, confirm the position ofthe brake and accelerator pedalbefore driving. If you don't checkthe position of the accelerator andbrake pedal before driving, youmay depress the accelerator in‐stead of the brake pedal. It maycause a serious accident.
In the event of brake failure
If service brakes fail to operate while
the vehicle is in motion, you can make an emergency stop with the parking
brake. The stopping distance, however,
will be much greater than normal.
WARNING
nParking brake
Applying the parking brake while thevehicle is moving at normal speedscan cause a sudden loss of control ofthe vehicle. If you must use theparking brake to stop the vehicle,use great caution in applying thebrake.

Disc brakes wear indicator
Your vehicle has disc brakes.
When your brake pads are worn andnew pads are required, you will hear a
high-pitched warning sound from your
front brakes or rear brakes. You may hear this sound come and go or it may
occur whenever you depress the brake
pedal.
Please remember that some driving conditions or climates may cause a
brake squeal when you first apply (or
lightly apply) the brakes. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with
your brakes.
CAUTION
•To avoid costly brake repairs, donot continue to drive with wornbrake pads.
•Always replace the front or rearbrake pads as pairs.

This brake wear warning soundmeans your vehicle needs service. Ifyou ignore this audible warning, youwill eventually lose braking perform‐ance, which could lead to a seriousaccident.
Rear drum brakes (if equipped)
Your rear drum brakes do not have
wear indicators. Therefore, have the rear brake linings inspected if you hear
a rear brake rubbing noise. Also have
your rear brakes inspected each time you change or rotate your tires and
when you have the front brakes re‐
placed.
Parking brake
Applying the parking brake
To engage the parking brake, first apply
the foot brake and then pull up the
parking brake lever as far as possible.
In addition it is recommended that when parking the vehicle on a incline,
the shift lever should be in a low gear
on manual transaxle vehicles or in the P (Park) position on automatic transaxle
vehicles.

• Under some conditions your parkingbrake can freeze in the engaged posi‐
tion. This is most likely to happen when there is an accumulation of
snow or ice around or near the rear
brakes or if the brakes are wet. If
there is a risk that the parking brake
may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you put the shift lever in P (au‐
tomatic transaxle) or in first or re‐
verse gear (manual transaxle) and
block the rear wheels so the vehicle
cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
• Do not hold the vehicle on the up‐ grade with the accelerator pedal. This
can cause the transaxle to overheat.
Always use the brake pedal or park‐ ing brake.WARNING
•To prevent unintentional move‐ment when stopped and leavingthe vehicle, do not use the gear‐shift lever in place of the parkingbrake. Set the parking brake ANDmake sure the gearshift lever issecurely positioned in P (Park) forautomatic transaxle equipped ve‐hicles.
•Never allow anyone who is unfa‐miliar with the vehicle to touch theparking brake. If the parking brakeis released unintentionally, seriousinjury may occur.
•All vehicles should always have theparking brake fully engaged whenparking to avoid inadvertentmovement of the vehicle whichcan injure occupants or pedes‐trians.

Check the brake warning light by turn‐
ing the ignition switch ON (do not start the engine). This light will be illumina‐
ted when the parking brake is applied
with the ignition switch in the START or ON position.
Before driving, be sure the parking
brake is fully released and the brake
warning light is off.
If the brake warning light remains on after the parking brake is released
while engine is running, there may be a
malfunction in the brake system. Im‐ mediate attention is necessary.

• On loose or uneven road surfaces, op‐eration of the anti-lock brake system
may result in a longer stopping dis‐
tance than for vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system.

CAUTION
•If the ABS warning light is on andstays on, you may have a problemwith the ABS. In this case, howev‐er, your regular brakes will worknormally.

•The ABS warning light will stay onfor approximately 3 seconds afterthe ignition switch is ON. Duringthat time, the ABS will go throughself-diagnosis and the light will gooff if everything is normal. CAUTION
•When you drive on a road havingpoor traction, such as an icy road,and operate your brakes continu‐ously, the ABS will be active con‐tinuously and the ABS warninglight may illuminate. Pull your carover to a safe place and stop theengine.
